3 Intrductin The ACUI Task Frce n the Develpment f Cre Cmpetencies in the Cllege Unin and Student Activities Prfessin has met its charge. After a cmprehensive prcess including schlarly research, extensive prfessinal member input, and validatin f the identified cre cmpetencies by the prfessinal members f the Assciatin f Cllege Unins Internatinal we submit the fllwing reprt identifying the cre cmpetencies fr the unin and activities prfessin. It is ur hpe that these identified cre cmpetencies will becme the fundatin fr the educatin and training f thse individuals entering and/r already in the unin and activities prfessin. The prcess f peratinalizing the cre cmpetencies int the fabric f ACUI, the prfessin, and the academy will be the crnerstne that significantly enhances the image f unin and activities wrk as a prfessin in higher educatin. ACUI will need t lead the way if this wrk is t becme the educatinal and training fundatin fr the prfessin. The task frce strngly encurages ACUI t make the prcess f peratinalizing the identified cre cmpetencies the fundatin f its strategic directin. The prcess t peratinalize the wrk will need t include an internal plan and external plan fr it t be accepted by the prfessin and especially the academy. If the cre cmpetencies are nt accepted by the academy, they will never truly becme valid. 3
4 Cre cmpetencies identified and verified fr the cllege unin and student activities prfessin The cre cmpetencies are defined and presented belw. The cre cmpetencies are presented in alphabetical rder and there is n implied rder f imprtance. Cre cmpetency: Refers t a set f cmpsite skills, knwledge, and behavirs that prvide the basis and frms the fundatin fr successful prfessinal practice in cllege unin and student activities wrk. 4

Facilities Management: Ability t successfully maintain attractive, safe, fully perable built envirnments. Fiscal Management: Ability t develp and manage financial systems thrugh respnsible stewardship f fiscal resurces. Human Resurce Develpment: Ability t interact with staff members and t manage staff resurces in a cnsistent and equitable manner. Intercultural Prficiency: Ability t successfully cmmunicate, understand, and interact amng persns with differing assumptins that exist because f ethnic and cultural rientatins. Leadership: Ability t develp and cmmunicate a visin s that thers cmmit t fulfilling the missin and gals f the rganizatin. Management: Ability t crdinate, versee, administer, and evaluate the daily peratins f ur facilities, prgrams, services, and activities. Marketing: Ability t identify primary markets and t develp and use effective prmtins, cmmunicatins, and infrmatinal pieces in a variety f media and frmats. Listed under each identified cre cmpetency are the ptential cmpetencies related t that particular cre cmpetency. Cmpetency: Refers t a cmplete set f skills, related knwledge, and exhibited behavirs that lead t the successful accmplishment f, and purpseful perfrmance in, cllege unin and student activities wrk. 6

Phase 2: Cultivate member buy-in. Phase 3: Cnduct an envirnmental scan f existing materials. Phase 4: Cnsistently validate infrmatin. Phase 5: Reprt findings establishing cre cmpetencies. Phase 1: Determine hw yu will use the cmpetencies. Basis t structure ACUI educatinal prgrams and the develpment f a purpseful curriculum. ACUI Educatin Cuncil chairpersns discussed the framewrk needed t develp cmpetencies fr the prfessin at their summer meeting 2002 using the initial findings/reprt develped by riginal task frce. The Educatin Cuncils tk n the prject f advancing the task frce s wrk t develp cre cmpetencies fr the prfessin that will drive ur educatinal prgrams. Initial discussin amng the Educatinal Cuncil chairpersns identified the fllwing ptential cre cmpetencies needed by the unin and activities prfessin Student develpment Organizatin advising Interpersnal skills Fiscal management Teaching and training Slicited feedback n the wrk cmpleted by the Educatin Cuncil chairs during their summer 2002 meeting via the Nvember 2002 Unin Wire, ACUI_NET, reginal cnferences, and January 2003 Bulletin news article. 11 Slicited feedback/discussin frm each Educatin Cuncil regarding (cre) cmpetencies during the 2003 ACUI annual cnference and via their respective listserves. Cmplied feedback received frm each f the Educatin Cuncils. Updated members n wrk dne t date in August Unin Wire referring them t the ACUI Frum site t cntinue the discussin. Reviewed (cre) cmpetency lists develped by each Educatin Cuncil and identified cmmn cre cmpetencies amng the fur Cuncil areas. Published news article f wrk dne t date in September 2003 Bulletin. Cnducted fcus grup discussins at the reginal cnferences with the general membership and/r amng the Reginal Leadership Teams regarding the identified cre cmpetencies. Presented t the ACUI Leadership Team the task frce s wrk; engaged them in a discussin f the findings, and identified cre cmpetencies. Discussed at each f the Educatin Cuncil meetings at the 2004 ACUI annual cnference. Discussed at the Educatin Cuncil chairs meeting during the 2004 ACUI annual cnference. Refined the cre cmpetencies after the cnference and sent them ut t the membership via ACUI_NET, ACUI Frum, Unin Wire, and The Bulletin fr final input. Presented t the Bard f Trustees during the July 2004 meeting final dcumentatin and slicited cnfirmatin f the wrk cmpleted. Phase 3: Cnduct an envirnmental scan f existing materials. Literature search cmpleted by Jan Javinar but is in the prcess f updating it since its cmpletin Phase 4: Cnsistently validate infrmatin. Leadership Team meeting, 2004 ACUI annual cnference ACUI Bard f Trustees and Educatin Cuncil chairs cnfirmatin Survey the prfessin n the identified cre cmpetencies (cllege unin and student activities staff, student affairs administratin, graduate prgram faculty) Incrprate as the fundatin in develping ACUI educatinal prgrams Develp materials t use cmpetencies at the institutinal level and graduate prgrams Review at least every five years Phase 5: Establish cre cmpetencies. 12 Cre cmpetencies validatin survey results The survey sample f ACUI members was queried using the scale belw t indicate the extent t which each cre cmpetency is imprtant fr prfessinals t be successful in unin and activities wrk. The results f the survey indicate that all cre cmpetencies scred greater than 3.5 n the graded scale. With statistical cnfidence and bjective analysis we can state that the cmpetencies identified by the Task Frce are the Cre Cmpetencies fr the cllege unin and student activities prfessin. Scale (5 pint graded): Nt imprtant, Smewhat imprtant, Imprtant, Very imprtant, Essential.
