1 Bakersfield Cllege m Review Annual Update I. m Infrmatin: m Name: m Type: Instructinal Nn Instructinal m Missin Statement: The Criminal Justice m guides and prepares students fr careers in law enfrcement, curts, and state and lcal crrectins. m Descriptin: Describe hw the prgram supprts the Bakersfield Cllege Missin. The Criminal Justice m prvides a diverse student ppulatin with the academic skills they will need t succeed in the jb market, and the critical thinking needed fr bth career and academic success. II. m Assessment (fcus n mst recent year): A. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur prgram planning? Students were given an bjective exam cntaining questins n the functins f plice, curts, and crrectins. Criminal Justice was required t assess each individual class. Criminal Justice ffered 13 different subjects, and many f them place different levels f emphasis n the functins f plice, curts and crrectins. The results f the test shw a great deal f variatin between different subjects regarding success rates bth fr the test itself and fr individual questins. Based n these utcmes, instructrs are nw placing greater emphasis n the functining and prcess f the legal system fr Fall B. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur resurce requests? The assessment results shw that Criminal Justice students wuld greatly benefit frm an additinal full time instructr. The prgram needs t cntinue its gal t btain clickers and clicker sftware fr its classes. C. Instructinal ms nly: Hw d curse level student learning utcmes align with prgram learning utcmes? The Criminal Justice prgram has three prgram level utcmes. Many criminal justice curses have multiple student learning utcmes. The prgram is currently in the prcess f reducing the listed number f student learning utcmes t better align bth with AD T requirements and the prgram level utcmes. D. Hw d the prgram learning utcmes align with Institutinal Learning Outcmes? Criminal Justice prgram level utcmes require students t achieve the fllwing gals: They will be able t: Identify, analyze, and apply the fundamental theries and cncepts underlying the American Criminal Justice system, identify and describe the peratinal elements f the majr cmpnents cmprising the American Justice system, and identify and implement the principles and prcedures utilized in legitimate scientific and criminal investigatin. Describe any significant changes in yur prgram s strengths since last year. Criminal Justice received anther full time instructr fr a ttal f three. Hwever, Criminal Justice still has nly 2 full time instructrs, as the third instructr retired 5 days befre the start f the semester. F. Describe any significant changes in yur prgram s weaknesses since last year. Criminal Justice desperately needs anther full time instructr. Fr the last tw years, ne full time instructr has been respnsible fr all prgram level wrk fr Criminal Justice in the fllwing areas: Assessment, AD T, SEP, APR, and all Curriculum issues. This instructr has als been respnsible fr all prgram level wrk fr the Crrectins m as well. Cmbined, bth prgrams ffer 16 different subjects. The afrementined prgram wrk des nt include cmmittee wrk, Academic Senate, r that this instructr has 3 separate subjects, 5 classes, and 250 students every semester. G. If applicable, describe any unplanned events that affected yur prgram. Until August 2014, Criminal Justice had three full time instructrs. 5 days befre the start f the semester, ne f the three full time instructrs annunced his retirement. Bakersfield Cllege and the Behaviral Sciences were able t btain adjunct instructrs fr 5 classes prir t the start date. III. Resurce Analysis: A. Human Resurces 1. If yu are requesting any additinal psitins, explain briefly hw the additinal psitins will cntribute t increased student success. Criminal Justice ffered 26 classes in 12 subjects fr Fall Bakersfield Cllege was able t btain adjunct instructrs fr many f these classes shrtly befre the semester started. Many f these classes deal with specific plicing issues. Criminal Justice students wuld greatly benefit frm anther experienced full time instructr. The Criminal Justice prgram wuld greatly benefit frm anther experienced full time instructr wh can assist the current instructrs with assessment, curriculum, cmmittee wrk, SEP pathways, and AD T issues. Describe briefly the effectiveness f the prfessinal develpment yur prgram has been engaged with (either prviding r attending) during the last cycle, fcusing n hw it cntributed t student success. 3 Facility, Kern Cunty Juvenile Hall, Kern Cunty Crime Lab, and Kern Cunty Superir Curt. These field trips greatly cntributed t student knwledge and career develpment. Further, many frmer Bakersfield Cllege criminal justice students wrk in these facilities and were able t share their experiences with current students. b. Prvide ratinale fr future prfessinal develpment pprtunities and cntributins that yur prgram can make. Criminal Justice instructrs will cntinue t make r take turs f lcal criminal justice facilities. The prgram wuld like t wrk with lcal facilities t prmte internships and ther emplyment pprtunities. B. Facilities (M&O requests can be submitted by cmpleting the M&O request frm.) Has yur area received any facilities maintenance, repair r updating in this cycle? N. 1. If yes, hw has the utcme cntributed t student success? 2. The lack f air cnditining every Mnday in the Language Arts building fr the last 14 years has meant that at least 15 class sessins every Fall semester are cnducted in 80 degree + temperatures. Students and faculty have cmplained abut this situatin fr ver a decade t n avail. Functining air cnditining shuld allw bth students, staff, and faculty t better fcus n their wrk. C.
