[Prgram Descriptin] The Educatinal Psychlgy prgram is designed t serve thse wh want t increase their understanding f human behavir frm cnceptin thrugh adulthd, research and evaluatin f learning, and teaching in infrmal and frmal educatinal settings. The prgram permits cncentratins in Schl Cunseling, Cmmunity Cunseling, Rehabilitatin Cunseling, Schl Psychlgy, Human Develpment and Learning, and Research and Evaluatin. The Department als ffers certificatin sequences t qualify students as schl psychlgists and schl cunselrs. Cunseling Prgram Descriptin The cunseling prgram in the Department f Educatinal Psychlgy ffers three distinct cncentratin areas: Cmmunity Cunseling, Rehabilitatin Cunseling, and Schl Cunseling. Given UWM's lcatin in the largest urban area in Wiscnsin, the cunseling faculty is cmmitted t training multiculturally cmpetent cmmunity cunselrs, rehabilitatin cunselrs, and schl cunselrs t serve clients in urban envirnments. All three cncentratins share a cre preparatin in the areas f cunseling and educatinal psychlgy. As students make prgress in their prgram f studies, their fcus will take n a mre specialized training with cntent specific curses and field placements where they will refine their cunseling skills in practical settings. The Cmmunity Cunseling cncentratin prepares students fr wrk in a variety f cmmunity settings such as mental health clinics, cmmunity agencies, cunseling centers, clleges and universities, and business and industry. Students arrange their prgram f studies in cnsultatin with their advisrs s that the 48 credits earned tward a master's degree will meet selected state certificatin requirements. The Rehabilitatin Cunseling cncentratin prepares cunselrs t assume a full range f prfessinal respnsibilities in a variety f rehabilitatin agencies, rganizatins,

The training mdel integrates theretical applicatins f the human experience with practitiner skills with the ultimate gal f full inclusin and integratin f all individuals with disabilities as equally valued members f sciety. The prgram f study includes a fcus n the career develpmental needs f persns with disabilities as well as full cmmunity participatin. Equally, the faculty believes in and prmtes health, wellness and preventin f disabilities and disease within sciety thrugh its schlarly pursuits. Students arrange their prgram f studies in cnsultatin with their advisrs s that the 48 credits earned tward a master's degree will meet requirements fr certificatin as a rehabilitatin cunselr (CRC). The rehabilitatin cunseling cncentratin is aligned with the standards f the Cuncil n Rehabilitatin Educatin. The Schl Cunseling cncentratin prepares students t wrk as schl cunselrs. The prgram is apprved by the Wiscnsin Department f Public Instructin. Effective fr students admitted t begin their prgram n r after May 15, 2002, certificatin requirements have significantly changed. All students will receive K-12 certificatin, and an internship r a 2-year teaching experience will n lnger be required. Students are trained t apply the principles f learning, human develpment, cunseling, and research and measurement within the schls. Preparatin is designed t enable students t deliver schl cunseling prgrams and services t schls and the cmmunity. Students arrange their prgram f studies in cnsultatin with their advisrs s that the 48 credits earned tward a master's degree als will satisfy Wiscnsin State Certificatin requirements. Certificatin is available as a K-12 Schl Cunselr and as a Bilingual Cunselr. The Schl Cunseling Certificatin prgram is fr students wh already pssess a master's degree. Certificatin students are admitted t the schl cunseling certificatin and enrll as nn-degree candidates. They need t meet the requirements fr schl cunselr certificatin, which are generally fewer than the credits required fr the M.S. Final selectin f curses is determined by cnsultatin with an advisr. Certificatin is available as a K-12 Schl Cunselr and as a Bilingual Cunselr. The requirements fr this certificatin prgram meet the certificatin standards f the Wiscnsin Department f Public Instructin. The three cncentratins train cunselrs t wrk with a diverse grup f clients in urban settings. Likewise, students are trained t deliver services as cunselrs in an ethical manner, as utlined by prfessinal cdes f cnduct. The cmpnents f cmmunity, schl, and rehabilitatin cncentratins are listed belw. All three share in cmmn curses cmprising an Educatinal Psychlgy cre f studies, a general Cunseling cre f studies, and a Cncentratin cre. The Educatinal Psychlgy cre prvides knwledge fr understanding research and prfessinal schlarship, techniques f educatinal and psychlgical measurement, and typical human grwth and develpment acrss the life-span. The Cunseling cre curses prvide training in basic helping prcesses and relatinships, career develpment, scial and diversity issues in cunseling, grup wrk, appraisal f client issues, cunseling thery, and the rle f family systems. The Cncentratin cre prvides training in advanced strategies fr helping clients change, and pprtunities fr increasing cmpetency with specific

Fieldwrk in Cunseling, and Supervised Practicum in Cunseling (fr cmmunity and schl students nly), and Internship in Rehabilitatin Cunseling (fr rehabilitatin students nly) all invlve the refinement f mre advanced and sphisticated cunseling skills in placements in actual cunseling settings. Students are required t spend 20 hurs each week during the semester at their placement site (an exceptin t this hur requirement is described belw fr students interested in seeking experience in dual cncentratins).
