2 Intrductin COLLEGE OF NURSING DEPARTMENT OF ONLINE BSN & MSN NURSING PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES FOR TENURE AND PROMOTION This dcument serves as a guide fr faculty members as they prepare fr prmtin r tenure in the Cllege f Nursing (CON). The dcument als serves as a guide fr Recruitment, Retentin, and Prmtin Cmmittee members and Department Chairs as they evaluate faculty. The basis f the dcument is sectin 3.5 f the Faculty Handbk as well as current and accepted practice that may be unique t the discipline f nursing and nursing educatin. The expectatins fr faculty achievement include effectiveness in teaching, in schlarly and creative endeavrs, and in service. Nt all faculty members will excel in all three areas, but each faculty member shuld shw active participatin in all areas and meet the minimum criteria fr the apprpriate rank. There are minimum requirements fr faculty members t achieve in each categry. These are expectatins that all faculty must meet as a part f the rle f faculty members. Faculty members wh d nt meet minimum requirements are nt eligible fr prmtin cnsideratin. The department chairpersn will determine if a faculty member meets minimum requirements befre submitting the candidate's curriculum vita and prtfli t the Peer Review Cmmittee. The chairpersn r dean can make exceptins t minimum requirements if the chair/dean determines that the faculty member's perfrmance in ne r mre areas is exceptinally utstanding. There are fur levels f achievement beynd the minimum requirements that faculty shuld meet fr prmtin and tenure. The level f achievement required depends n the faculty member's academic rank r the rank ne is seeking fr prmtin. Each successive rank's criteria shw increasing levels f activity. Sme activities may verlap as evidence in tw r mre categries (teaching, schlarly/creative endeavrs, and service). Hwever, each activity may cunt in nly ne categry. Additinally, faculty members will receive credit fr a particular activity nly ne time. Fr instance, activities used as evidence fr prmtin frm assistant t assciate prfessr will nt cunt as evidence fr subsequent prmtin frm assciate t full prfessr. Evidence must shw cntinued active prgress and prductivity in each categry. T merit cnsideratin as evidence f meeting criteria in a particular categry, data must nt be ver five years ld. Hwever, the candidate's curriculum vita shuld be cmplete and shuld shw a picture f cnsistent prductivity ver ne's prfessinal career. The quantity, quality, and cnsistency f all prfessinal activities are a part f the evaluatin prcess fr thse seeking prmtin r tenure. Fr instance, hlding membership in an rganizatin by paying dues will nt suffice. One must shw evidence f active invlvement in the rganizatin. It is the respnsibility f the individual candidates t demnstrate effectiveness within the scpe f their unique respnsibilities. Again, the chairpersn r dean can make exceptins t prmtin/tenure criteria if the chair/dean determines that the faculty member's perfrmance in ne r mre areas is exceptinally utstanding. Candidates must explicitly state which criteria they have met and must specify the sectins f the prtflis that cntain the evidence f meeting the criteria. Teaching Faculty members applying fr prmtin r tenure in the Cllege f Nursing (CON) must shw evidence f effectiveness as a teacher. T prvide students with an in-depth learning experience, faculty must functin in different rles, and use a variety f instructinal methdlgies in a number f different settings. Nursing, as a unique discipline, defines schlarship as any prfessinal activity in which the faculty member strives t advance educatin, nursing, and health care knwledge; prvide fr the educatinal and health needs f sciety; and assume leadership and ther rles that effect psitive changes in systems and plicies.
