Prgramme Infrmatin This prgramme in MSc Elder Care is designed t meet the needs f prfessinals and ther graduates interested in the care f the Elderly and wrking in either the Public r the Private sectr, Parastatal bdies, NGO s and ther Institutins. It is mainly geared twards prviding thse interested in this challenging area f human life an insight in the practical and theretical issues related t. The prgramme is intended fr bth, peple seeking training in the field f Elder Care, and thse wh are already invlved in activities with the elderly and wh wish t enhance their knwledge and skills as practicing prfessinals in the sectrs f health, scial and ther welfare services cncerned with the welfare f the Elderly. The curriculum cvers tpics related t the bilgical, psychlgical, scial and epidemilgical changes caused by the aging prcess; attitudes twards the individuals; care and services prmting prductive ; intergeneratinal relatinships and ther cultural issues related t. The mdules will prvide students with a brad educatinal base cvering the impact f n individuals frm different cultures. The prgramme will draw n ther disciplines such as management, scial and behaviural sciences, ecnmics, plitical and ther natural sciences. The prgramme is pen t Graduates with ccupatinal backgrunds in the fllwing areas and is practicing as: Scial wrkers Prbatin fficers. Family cunselrs Health wrkers Persnnel invlved in the care f the elderly Educatrs Welfare fficers Plice Officers. Prisn Officers. Nursing Officers Scial Welfare Officers Persnnel invlved in family and the cunseling f the elderly. B. Prgramme Aims The verall aim f this prgramme is t ffer all students a supprtive and challenging learning envirnment that will enable them t develp persnal qualities and prfessinal knwledge, expertise and skills deemed necessary fr cmpetent practitiners interested in the issues within sciety. It is designed t equip the curse participants with the necessary knwledge and skills t wrk with elderly peple, in institutins and situatins arising in this stage f human life. It will supprt the prfessinal develpment f thse already invlved in wrking with the elderly; while adding an academic dimensin t their existing skills, with a view t make them mre efficient practitiners in the field f Elder Care Management. 3 C. Prgramme Objectives Develp an appreciatin f the philsphies, theries and research cncerning the prcess. Prvide pprtunities t investigate significant issues thrugh case studies. Demnstrate an in-depth understanding f the prcess. Acquire critical understanding f the place and rle f the elderly in sciety. Appraise the imprtance f persnal experience and values and attitudes in wrking with the elderly. Explre the issues in relatin t in varius settings: health care, scial, rganisatinal and the family. Explain the imprtance f research methdlgy in gerntlgy. Cnsider the relevance f ethical, scial and cultural and legal issues in the prcess. PART I - Regulatins D. General Entry Requirements As per UTM S Admissins Regulatins, and Admissin t Prgrammes f Study at Masters Degree Level. E. Prgramme Entry Requirements Admissin decisins will be made by the Schl f Business, Management and Finance n a case t case basis subject t the apprval f the Academic Cuncil. Candidates must either be: Graduates frm a recgnised university r ther institutins f higher educatin with at least a secnd class hnurs degree r hlders f an apprved prfessinal qualificatin deemed equivalent t an hnurs degree. Or Other hnurs graduates r hlders f an equivalent qualificatin may be admitted if they prduce evidence which satisfies the Schl Bard, f their cmpetence t pursue the prgramme; Or Applicants wh d nt satisfy any f the requirements as per Regulatins r the abve but wh submit satisfactry evidence f having passed examinatins r have acquired managerial experience which are deemed by the Academic Cuncil t be equivalent t any f thse listed. Overseas Candidates Overseas candidates whse first language is nt English and wh d nt hld a degree r equivalent prfessinal qualificatin taught in English will be required t prduce evidence f their cmpetence in English. F. Prgramme Mde and Duratin Full Time: Part Time: 1 ½ Years 2 Years Each academic year includes tw semesters f 15 weeks each (excluding exam perid) and each semester is cmprised f activities f teaching and learning strategies. 4 G. Teaching and Learning Strategies The prgramme will cnsist f a wide variety f teaching methds, including lectures, individual r grup prjects, presentatins, wrkshps, seminars and case studies. Self-learning will be the key feature f the prgramme, enabling students t explre, investigate and research in varius issues related t human resurce management. H. Student Supprt and Guidance In additin t traditinal lectures, grup tutrials r individual tutrials are arranged fr students. Wherever pssible, students will be encuraged t attend shrt placements in institutins catering fr the elderly in either the public r the private sectr. I. Attendance Requirements As per UTM s Regulatins and Plicy. J. Credit System MSc 42 Credits PGDip 30 Credits PGCert 18 Credits 1 mdule = 3, 4, r 8 credits Prject / Dissertatin = 12 credits All mdules will carry 100 marks. K. Student Prgress and Assessment Written examinatin inclusive f reading time shall be f duratin f 2-3 hurs fr mdules carrying less r equal t 3 credits and nt less than 3 hurs fr mdules carrying mre than 3, 4 and 8 credits. All mdules are nrmally assessed ver 100 marks, except fr prject/dissertatin where it shall be as specified in the prgramme dcument. The verall pass mark fr a mdule shall be 40%.
