The Prgramme In the schl year a Graduate Certificate in the Educatin f Students with Autistic Spectrum Disrders will be ffered in St Patrick s Cllege, Drumcndra, Dublin 9. The Prgramme will run frm September 2015 t early June An applicatin frm accmpanies this Circular fr cmpletin by eligible teachers interested in participating in the prgramme. Cmpleted applicatin frms shuld be frwarded t The Curse Directr, Special Educatin Department, St Patrick s Cllege, Drumcndra, Dublin 9, t be received nt later than 27 th February, Eighteen places are available in the Prgramme year 2015/ Funding Funding fr the prgramme is prvided by the Teacher Educatin Sectin f the Department f Educatin and Skills. 3. Aim and Cntent The aim f the prgramme will be t prvide substantial theretical and practical training fr teachers wrking with students wh have autistic spectrum disrders and, thereby, t cntribute t the schl s verall capacity in this area. A qualificatin f Graduate Certificate will be awarded by Dublin City University. Participants will be assessed n the basis f full attendance at the prgramme venue and full participatin in the distance elements f the curse, cmpletin f selected tasks and written assignments and supervisin f their wrk in schl. Further details will be made available t applicants by the Special Educatin Department f St Patrick s Cllege

2 4. Duratin and Organisatin The prgramme is ne-year, part-time frm September 2015 t June 2016, and cnsists f 3 mdules. The curse is delivered thrugh distance learning mdes, n-site learning at St. Patrick s Cllege and cnsiders teachers practical engagement with students in schls. The prgramme is based n participants being released frm their schls fr three weeks f the academic year. The prgramme will include face-t-face tuitin, tutrials and visits t ther educatinal settings t bserve examples f exemplary practice. The distance element f the curse will include nline synchrnus and asynchrnus engagement (curse materials, nline lectures and discussin fra). 5. Eligibility Please nte that all teachers must be registered in accrdance with Sectin 31 f the Teaching Cuncil Act, Please refer t the Teaching Cuncil website fr further infrmatin. This prgramme is fr registered teachers wh hld a pst currently funded by the Department f Educatin and Skills and wh are currently wrking with students with Autistic Spectrum Disrders (ASDs) r wh will be wrking with students with ASDs fr the duratin f the Prgramme in recgnised Primary Schls including Special Schls and recgnised Pst-Primary Schls. The prgramme is designed specifically t assist teachers in meeting the learning and teaching needs f students with ASDs. Ptential applicants must therefre have a teaching rle in relatin t students with ASDs. (a) Primary: Teachers will be required t frward a cpy f their Registratin Certificate r Cnfirmatin f Registratin letter 1 frm the Teaching Cuncil, when submitting their applicatin frm. If the Educatin Sectr(s) field is blank, teachers will be required t prvide evidence that they have qualificatins suitable t teach in either the mainstream primary sectr r t teach students with Special Educatinal Needs r students requiring Learning Supprt in the primary sectr. Applicants frm Primary Schls shuld have successfully cmpleted their prbatinary perid. (b) Pst-primary: Teachers will be required t frward a cpy f their Registratin Certificate r Cnfirmatin f Registratin letter (see ftnte belw) frm the Teaching Cuncil, when submitting their applicatin frm. If the Educatin Sectr(s) field is blank, teachers will be required t prvide evidence that they have qualificatins suitable t teach in either the mainstream pst-primary sectr r t teach students with special educatinal needs r students requiring learning supprt in the pst-primary sectr. Applicants frm Pst-Primary Schls shuld have successfully cmpleted their Inductin and Pst Qualificatin Emplyment (PQE) (c) Special Schls: Teachers will be required t frward a cpy f their Registratin Certificate r Cnfirmatin f Registratin letter (see ftnte belw) frm the Teaching Cuncil, when submitting their applicatin frm. If the Educatin Sectr(s) field is blank teachers will be required t prvide evidence that they have qualificatins suitable t teach either in the mainstream primary r pstprimary sectrs r t teach students with special educatinal needs r students requiring learning supprt in the primary r pst-primary sectr r t teach in special schl settings. Applicants frm Special Schls shuld have successfully cmpleted their prbatinary perid. While teachers are cmpleting this prgramme and fr a reasnable perid f time fllwing cmpletin f the prgramme, it is advised that schl management make every effrt t ensure that students with ASDs cntinue t benefit frm the teacher s knwledge and expertise in this area, thrugh assigning the learning and teaching f students with ASDs t the teacher cncerned. Cllabrative practices, such as team-teaching, can als frm a part f these arrangements. In rder t participate in the prgramme, teachers will need access t a cmputer and the Internet. 3 6. Applicatins and Selectin An Applicatin Frm accmpanies this Circular fr cmpletin by eligible teachers interested in participating in the prgramme. Nrmally, applicatins will be accepted frm nt mre than ne teacher per schl wh meets the requirements utlined in this Circular. Fees N fee r registratin charges will apply fr applicants eligible under the terms f this Circular. 8. Travel and Subsistence Travel and subsistence will be prvided fr any f the face-t-face elements f the prgramme in accrdance with Teacher Educatin Sectin rates. 9. Extra Persnal Vacatin N extra persnal vacatin will be allwed in respect f participatin in this Curse. 10. Substitutin Substitutin, which must be apprved by the managerial authrity f the schl/etb, will be allwed. The substitutin must be deemed necessary t cver the apprved perids f absence f the teacher frm teaching duty fr attendance at the curse. Dcumentatin frm the cllege specifying the absence details must be retained by the schl. It shuld be nted that paid substitutin cver will nt be prvided by the Department f Educatin and Skills where a teacher takes persnal leave during the blck release element f the Prgramme. 11. Salary Arrangements All teachers n release frm their schl under the terms f this Prgramme will cntinue t receive their salary in the usual way. 12. Allwances Please nte that successful cmpletin f this Prgramme will nt result in any entitlement t additinal remuneratin frm the Department f Educatin and Skills. 13. Master s Prgramme Teachers wh successfully cmplete the Graduate Certificate in the Educatin f Pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disrders (ASDs) may be eligible t apply fr the Diplma in Special Educatinal Needs and t prgress t a Masters in Special Educatinal Needs at St. Patrick s Cllege.
