In cmmn with ther curses in the prgramme, this curse is designed t assist students t make the transitin frm undergraduate t pstgraduate study. The curse includes a 10 M level credit Master s Inductin mdule in the first term. Learning n a master s degree is very demanding and, fr many students, very different frm what they have experienced previusly. In particular, fr internatinal students there may be significant differences frm their hme cuntry appraches t educatin and study. A student is expected t perfrm at master s level, and, n a ne-year intensively taught master s prgramme, they need t be apprpriately supprted in their studies. The Master s Inductin mdule prvides a fundatin curse specific t the Business Schl s Pstgraduate PPM. The mdule is frmative, which means that the assessment and fast feedback prvided during this initial stage f master s studies will help identify the learning needs and areas that shuld be addressed by the student. Identifying these needs early n in their studies will allw students t address any prblems and difficulties, and imprve n them as sn as pssible. The mdule prvides a fundatin in the critical and essential academic skills required fr cmpetence at master s level. The Masters Inductin mdule will prvide a bridge t the ther mdules in the curse. The learning utcmes f the Master s Inductin mdule will be assessed thrugh a prtfli apprach, and will include evidence f academic skills practiced in addressing the curse wrk set in ther cmpulsry (and ptinal) mdules. 6 Assessment In rder t supprt the learning and teaching apprach utlined abve, mdules that are scheduled in term 1 will include an early and brief frmative assessment. These early assessments will nrmally be handed in within the first 6 weeks f term. They will be used t prvide rapid diagnstic feedback t students, which will nrmally be prvided within 10 days f the hand-in date. Assessment at the end f a mdule will be summative; prviding an verall measure f the learning that has been achieved ver the mdule as a whle. Earlier assessments will be frmative; in the sense that they will prvide feedback t students regarding their perfrmance, and indicatins as t hw this culd be imprved. The curse regulatins are in accrdance with the University's General Examinatin and Assessment Regulatins as set ut in the Pst Graduate Framewrk Regulatins. There are tw rutes int this element f the prgramme: fr thse wh meet the academic entry qualificatins, but wh d nt meet the minimum English language requirements f IELTS 6.5 r equivalent, prvided their English language ability is at least 4.5 IELTS r equivalent, they may be admitted thrugh the English Language rute f EMMA. There is als an academic rute thrugh EMMA fr thse wh require it. Sept

Within the general framewrk prvided by these regulatins the fllwing arrangements are specific t the scheme. In additin this curse is subject t the general regulatins cntained in the Brightn Business Schl Pstgraduate Masters Framewrk and the fllwing curse specific regulatins. Aims and Objectives: The Extended Masters (EMA) curses have been designed fr students wh have the apprpriate academic qualificatins and experience t gain a place n a University f Brightn Masters curse, but wh need an extended perid f study in rder t develp the English language skills required t cmplete the Masters curse successfully. The EMA curses have been designed t ensure that students whse first language is nt English can participate successfully and with cnfidence in Masters Prgrammes f study in their chsen field f study. The English Language cmpnent f EMA aims t develp: active mastery f the range f grammatical cnstructins, and bth general and study-specific vcabulary in English general fluency and cnfidence in all fur language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) effectiveness in a range f cmmunicatin tasks relevant t the student s chsen field f study and prfessinal cntext independence and cnfidence in the learning skills required fr pstgraduate study in the UK, including familiarity with the cnventins and expectatins f the UK academic envirnment Prgramme Structure: Sept

10 The Extended Masters prgramme is available nly t full-time students and cnsists f 2 extended perids f study: 3 mnths (12 weeks) f subject specific English language and academic skills befre the Master s degree and 2 mnths (8 weeks) f subject specific English language befre the Master s degree. The English Language cmpnent invlves students having 20 hurs f timetabled lessns per week, with sme afternns free fr directed self-study. Fr 3-5 hurs f the timetabled sessins, students are given an input lecture/wrkshp frm specialist tutrs frm the Schl/field in which the student will prgress t study. Taught sessins will be fcused n a range f interactive tasks, invlving authentic spken and written input and utput t develp ral and written fluency, alng with sustained grammatical and lexical develpment. Small grup-wrk with bth spken and written utputs is a strng cmpnent f taught sessins. Learning and Assessment: The EMA prgramme requires students t study assessed mdules. Thse registering fr the 12 week rute take 2 EY mdules: a 20 CAT mdule designed t assess academic language and skills within a subject specific cntext, and a 10 CAT mdule designed t assess nging engagement in reflectin n language learning and acculturatin by means f a prtfli. Thse registering fr the 8 week rute register fr the same 2 mdules as thse fr the 15 mnth rute, but having btained a higher level f English upn entry, it is deemed that these students are able t achieve the learning utcmes and bjectives via a different attendance pattern. All mdules are level 6 and reflect the autnmy with which students are expected t demnstrate furthering their language skills and the cgnitive cmplexity f the tasks they undertake. Prgressin: Students will need t pass bth EY mdules they are registered fr befre prgressing nt the Master s degree. The pass mark fr the mdules is 40%. Students are given 2 attempts. A jint AEB/CEB takes place tw weeks prir t the start f the Master s degree. This bard will cnsider marks in accrdance with Gear regulatins. Students wh are referred have the pprtunity f ding a referral task, and a decisin abut prgressin can be made at a referral bard, which sits the week befre the start f the Master s degree. Students wh d nt pass the EY mdules prir t the start f the Master s degree are either asked t withdraw frm the curse, r re-apply t take the mdules and the Master s degree the fllwing year.
