It is reviewed and updated every year as part f Keele s Curriculum Annual Review and Develpment prcess. The dcument aims t clarify t ptential and current students what yu can expect frm the study f the subject ver the curse f yur prgramme. This dcument prvides a summary f the main features f the pstgraduate taught Masters and Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management. It explains what a student can expect frm studying Human Resurce Management at Masters Level (FHEQ Level 7) at Keele University, and includes infrmatin abut what a student will be able t d if s/he takes full advantage f the pprtunities prvided during the curse f this prgramme. What is the philsphy f the Prgramme? This is a high quality and distinctive prgramme fr candidates with a first degree, r thse with ther acceptable qualificatins and relevant experience, subject t interview, and is available by full-time study. While it is recgnised that many graduates will wish t wrk in the field f management, the aims f the degree are nt vcatinal, but reflect the HRM and Industrial Relatins subject grup s cmmitment t the subject as critical scial science, and the cnvictin that this prepares students fr emplyment in a range f public, private and Versin December 2014 Page 1 f 12

It is a distinctive feature f this prgramme that the field f study includes the thery, develpment and practice f industrial relatins as a cre part f human resurce management. A further distinctive feature f the prgramme is its develpmental nature. Many f the full-time students are frm verseas and, while they may have scial science r business based first degrees, they rarely have much academic r practical experience f the specialist subject area. This determines ur teaching and learning apprach t the taught part f the curse. The MA prgramme prvides a thrugh understanding f the emplyment relatinship and an excellent grunding in the thery and practice f HRM, labur management and industrial relatins. It lcates these in a histrically infrmed treatment f the whle subject area. It examines key institutins, prblems and issues in cntemprary HRM and industrial relatins, including the rights and interests f emplyees as well as the frmatin and impact f public plicy. The main fcus f the taught part f the curse is n the United Kingdm, but this is set within a brader cmparative perspective, enabling an assessment f cntrasting systems f industrial relatins and an evaluatin f a range f crucial issues n a Eurpean and a glbal scale. When students prceed t undertake a research based dissertatin, the taught part f the curse prvides them with an imprtant fundatin upn which t cnduct research in the United Kingdm and internatinal lcatins. Whilst yu will undubtedly have already develped these skills and abilities t varying degrees, such existing capabilities can always be deepened and enriched. Our educatinal prgramme and learning envirnment is designed t help yu t develp further as a well-runded pstgraduate wh is capable f making a psitive and valued cntributin in a cmplex and rapidly changing wrld, whichever spheres f life yu engage in during and after yur studies at Keele. Hw is the Prgramme taught? The mde f study is full-time. Acquisitin f knwledge and understanding is thrugh HRM subject team and guest lectures, small-grup discussins and tutrials, individual cnsultatin, guided reading and self-study, and thrugh the research dissertatin. These principal learning and teaching methds are assisted by a variety f ther learning activities, such as grup and individual presentatins, individual feedback n assignments, the use f case studies and summative and frmative assessment. Summative assessment is thrugh six 3,000-wrd written assignments and a 15,000-wrd research dissertatin Frmative assessment is thrugh a 1,500-wrd research methds assignment In additin, all mdules f the taught part f the curse have frmative activities that are nt assessed but aim t prvide feedback t students abut their learning t imprve their achievement f intended learning utcmes. A cmbinatin f grup feedback and individual feedback where apprpriate is prvided verbally in class. In relatin t essays, students have the pprtunity t discuss n a ne-t-ne basis with their tutr their assignment plan and t receive written feedback where necessary. 4 All students are encuraged t submit an essay plan and a draft f their dissertatin and receive cmments back frm tutrs/supervisrs. The purpse is fr students t reflect n the feedback and use this t infrm their writing up f the essay/dissertatin. What is the Structure f the Prgramme? There are seven taught mdules and a research dissertatin mdule. Mdules are taught cnsecutively, in line with the develpmental nature f the prgramme. Students are required t prduce a written research prpsal, seek apprval f their chsen research tpic, and cmplete an Ethics Pr-frma as part f their research dissertatin. Material is supplied n research methds, and all students are allcated a supervisr. Nn-native English speaking students underg an English Language assessment n entry t the prgramme. The language test will determine whether students will have t attend additinal English Language tuitin t imprve the fundamental academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that will be necessary fr academic success. Students may then be placed n an apprpriate Academic English fr Pstgraduate Students mdule ffered by the English Language Unit f the University. Fr students required t undertake these mdules, determinatin f prgressin t the dissertatin mdule (as utlined abve) will include an evaluatin f the student s engagement and perfrmance n the respective English Language mdules. The additin f a successful cmpletin f a research dissertatin leads t the award f a Masters degree (180 credits, f which at least 150 must be at FHEQ Level 7 and 30 at FHEQ Level 6). 4. Hw is the Prgramme assessed? The MA prgramme cnsists f seven taught mdules and a research mdule (as utlined in Sectin 3). The first taught mdule is delivered in tw parts ver tw semesters. The first cmprises an inductin prgramme and guest speakers / site visits (subject t availability). The secnd cmprises lectures and seminars n research methds. The mdule attracts 10 credits at FHEQ Level 7 and is assessed frmatively by a 1,500 wrd essay based upn research design and methds n a pass/fail basis. Students failing the assignment are allwed t re-submit their assignment until it cvers the apprpriate design, use f methds and assessment f validity, reliability, bias and ethical issues. The remaining six taught mdules are assessed by essays f 3,000 wrds, each attracting 20 credits at FHEQ Level 7 fr marks f 50 per cent r abve. Where student essays fr any mdule d nt meet the required standard fr FHEQ Level 7 credits, they will be re-assessed against FHEQ Level 6 learning utcmes, and if they meet these requirements, will be awarded credits al FHEQ Level 6. The ttal number f credits available n the taught part f the curse ranges frm 130 at FHEQ Level 7, t 90 at FHEQ Level 7 and 40 at FHEQ Level 6. If a student achieves mre than tw FHEQ Level 6 results at their first attempt, then re-submissin f ne r mre f these essays might have t take place. The dissertatin passed at 50 per cent r better, attracts 60 credits at FHEQ Level 7. N FHEQ Level 6 credits are available fr this mdule. The dissertatin must be passed in its wn right fr the MA t be awarded. Students wh fail t submit a dissertatin within the specified deadline shall be regarded as having failed by nn-submissin. These students, and thse wh have attained a mark f less than 50% at FHEQ level 7 fr the dissertatin, shall be permitted t re-submit a dissertatin n ne ccasin nly, nt mre than ten mnths frm the date f fficial cmmunicatin f the result t the student. Marks are awarded fr summative assessment designed t assess students achievement f learning utcmes. Applicants are nrmally required t hld at least a secnd-class hnurs degree (2.1 r 2.2) r verseas equivalent. Students wh have apprpriate prfessinal qualificatins r relevant wrk experience may als be cnsidered. Applicants whse first language is nt English will be required t shw cmpetency in English (IELTS 6.5 with minimum f 6.0 in each f the sub-tests, r equivalent). It is pssible fr students t enter the curse with advanced standing (r mdule exemptin) based upn the accreditatin f prir certificated learning (APCL) r accreditatin f prir experiential learning (APEL). 10 Each student is allcated a member f the prgramme team as an Academic Tutr. Students are allcated a tutrial grup and hld weekly tutrials with their Academic Tutr. The tutr's rle is t help and advise his/her students n all aspects f the mdules, and he/she will cmment n essay plans, and prvide feedback fr assignments. Bth Academic Tutrs and the Curse Directr will maintain an verview f prgress n the curse, and prvide feedback n curse prgress. Research supervisrs are allcated t guide students during their wrk n the research dissertatin. Named members f staff will be available t prvide pastral and nn-academic supprt fr students registered n the prgramme. There will be tw surces available t students wh wish t seek this supprt. These are: a) A Persnal Tutr wh will tend t deal with mst cases where a student requires supprt. b) An independent adviser wh will be available fr thse students wh d nt wish t discuss certain persnal circumstances, r issues with the prgramme. Finally, the Curse Directr is available t discuss any academic r pastral issues. Nn-native English speakers are als supprted by the English Language Unit f the University, wh prvides additinal language tuitin. 7. Students are able t access mdule utlines, lecture slides, additinal resurces and a variety f guidance ntes, and are required t submit cpies f their assignments via Turnitin. During the inductin week, the Schl r Faculty Learning Technlgist prvide sessins n learning technlgy utilised by the prgramme, including an intrductin t the virtual Keele Learning Envirnment and assessment submissin via Turnitin. Students n the PG Diplma/MA in HRM prgramme als have access t a range f cmprehensive vide guides prvided by Keele Management Schl, cvering issues such as hw t access Keele University Library Services, hw t perfrm basic searches, and hw t submit a Turnitin assignment, etc. Students have access t the University s library facilities, including the lan f bks and remte access t electrnic resurces such as nline databases and jurnals frm any PC with an Internet cnnectin. See The library building als huses cmputing services. Students have access t a large number f pen-access PCs as well as printing facilities. 11 In either r bth semesters there might be the pprtunity t hear visiting speakers r t attend visits t rganisatins (subject t availability). Where these are designated as a cmpnent f Mdule One (HRM-40026) attendance is cmpulsry. There is n cst cmmitment required frm the students fr such visits. This is a ne year, full-time taught Masters prgramme; individual units are nt available fr cntinuing prfessinal develpment. 9. Quality management and enhancement The Prgramme Bard, which cmprises the academic staff wh are respnsible fr the curse, is respnsible fr the day t day management f the prgramme; the Curse Directr chairs this bdy. The Curse Directr f the prgramme als reprts t the schl s Pstgraduate Curse Directrs Grup and the Schl Learning and Teaching Cmmittee. T ensure that the MA Human Resurce Management maintains the highest pssible standards and ensures the effective management and cntinuus enhancement f the quality f learning and teaching, the prgramme emplys the fllwing prcedures. Staff Student Liaisn Cmmittee: This is an integral part f the mnitring and review prcedures and prvides a valuable surce f infrmatin fr the prgramme team. Student-Staff Liaisn Meetings prvide cnstructive feedback thrugh student representatives. Student evaluatin f teaching: Students have the pprtunity t evaluate the prgramme thrugh evaluatin questinnaires. Data frm the evaluatins is reprted at regular prgramme staff meetings and the Staff Student Liaisn Cmmittee meetings. We als mnitr student feedback thrugh varius ther means, including feedback sessins, ad-hc discussins with students in tutrials and lectures thrughut the year, and individual discussins with student representatives. Annual Prgramme Review: A range f data is used t infrm the annual prgramme review thrugh the University s Curriculum Annual Review and Develpment (CARD) prcess. It cmprises data such as student evaluatins, external examiners reprt, and internal prgramme review and mnitring data. The Prgramme is run in accrdance with the standards set ut in the University s Academic Quality and Standards Plicy and is subject t regular audits f its cmpliance with these standards.
