5 samoa news, Thursday, June 4, 2015 Page B5 A Miss. school official pressing charges for cheering at graduation JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Ursula Miller knew that when she shouted her niece s name after she received her diploma at a north Mississippi high school graduation, she would probably be asked to leave the arena. But she never expected Senatobia school district Superintendent Jay Foster, who instructed spectators to hold their cheers until after all students graduated, would file criminal charges against her. Miller, a resident of the 8,000-person town 30 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee, is one of three people facing misdemeanor charges of disturbing the peace following the May 21 Senatobia High School graduation. I understood as a consequence I was going to be escorted out of the graduation, but no one told me there were going to be criminal charges against me, Miller, 45, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday. Foster didn t respond to requests for comment Tuesday from the AP. He told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper that the behavior showed disrespect to other graduates. I did go and sign papers on them for disturbing the peace, he said. My point is not to have somebody have to pay money, but I want them to know there are consequences for their behavior, and I want us to have a dignified service. Zabe Davis, the police chief at Northwest Mississippi Community College, which hosted the graduation, said Foster swore out charges against three people. Miller said a constable served her with the charges Monday morning at home. Pending in Tate County Justice Court, they carry a fine of up to $500 and a sentence of up to six months in jail. Miller said she s supposed to appear in court Tuesday. Foster said he s worked to dignify graduations, stopping outbursts of cheering that prevent other student from hearing their own names. He said one student flinched last month when the cheering broke the silence. The look on her face when she was coming across the stage just reminded me, this is about the kids, he said. So many things these days, if I had to sum it up in a few words, it s all about me. But this is not. This is about the graduates. But Miller said she was only trying to celebrate her niece s achievement. That s what we do in our family, is we celebrate this occasion, Miller said. She deserved that cheer and I would do it again. GOP-controlled House backing state laws on medical marijuana WASHINGTON (AP) The federal government would be unable to block state laws permitting the use of medical marijuana under legislation approved Wednesday by the GOP-controlled House. But lawmakers narrowly rejected an amendment that would stop the Justice Department from interfering with states like Colorado and Washington that permit the recreational use of marijuana. The vote on medical pot was a larger margin than a tally last year, when the House first approved it as part of a bill funding the Justice Department. Wednesday s vote was to renew the pro-pot language as part of a bill providing funding for the coming fiscal year. The overall measure passed by a mostly party-line vote. Most Republicans opposed the idea and the Senate is in GOP hands this year, so the outcome could still be reversed. But Senate advocates of medical marijuana won a test vote in the GOP-controlled Appropriations Committee last month. On Wednesday, 67 Republicans, including libertarian-minded lawmakers such as Thomas Massie of Kentucky, combined with all but a handful of Democrats in support of states that allow doctors to prescribe pot for medical uses, such as improving the appetites of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Almost half the states allow medical marijuana, which remains an illegal drug under federal law. But the federal government has adopted a hands-off approach to states that have adopted lenient marijuana laws. The Justice Department has issued guidance to governors in such states including the four that have enacted laws permitting pot possession for recreational use that it won t challenge those laws so long as marijuana is tightly regulated. The medical marijuana train has definitely left the station, said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore. The government is instead focusing on preventing distribution to minors and keeping pot profits from going to organized criminal enterprises. Still, marijuana is a Schedule I drug under a landmark 1970 drug law, meaning the government deems it to have no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The Treasury Department has also issued guidance intended to clarify that financial institutions can offer services to businesses that dispense marijuana, though industry advocates say most banks are still reluctant to do so for fear of prosecution. The amendment to allow recreational pot use, offered by conservative Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was rejected by a surprisingly narrow vote. McClintock s measure had less GOP support and more Democratic opposition than did the amendment on medical marijuana. This is not an argument for or against marijuana, McClintock said. This strictly involves the rights of citizen in various states to regulate commerce that occurs entirely within their own borders. Voters in Alaska and Oregon last year approved ballot measures legalizing marijuana, bringing the number of states permitting legal pot possession to four. Opponents say marijuana remains dangerous even as laws get more lenient. A study recently found that even casual users experience severe brain abnormalities... and that pot smoking leads to a loss of ambition, to lower IQs, and that it impairs attention, judgment, memory and many other things, said Rep. John Fleming, R-La. The underlying $51 billion spending bill only partially funds President Obama s request for new community policing initiatives, such as funding to help local police purchase body cameras to record their interactions with the people they re assigned to protect TALA MAI SAMOA Mai itulau B1 AMATA GALUEGA MO LE FALE E TEU AI VAILAAU E $12.9 miliona tala le tau atoa o le fale teu oloa faapitoa mo vailaau tau le soifua maloloina ua amata fausia i Motootua. (Continued on page B16) ZURICH (AP) In one tumultuous week, world soccer s governing body was plunged into a corruption scandal, top officials were arrested, new investigations were launched, and Sepp Blatter was reelected as president, only to stun everyone by saying he was quitting. On Wednesday, Blatter s staff gave him a standing ovation. As ripples of the scandal reverberated from Europe to Africa to the Middle East, the embattled president showed up for work at FIFA s gleaming headquarters in Zurich, where FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said he met with staff and received their applause. On May 27, Swiss police raided a luxury Zurich hotel on the eve of FIFA s annual conference and arrested seven soccer officials. They were among 14 current and former sports and marketing officials indicted by U.S. authorities on bribery, vote-rigging and other corruption charges. In a separate investigation, Swiss authorities seized documents at FIFA headquarters in their probe into the bidding contests for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments. The 79-year-old Blatter has not been officially implicated so far in either investigation, and he won re-election to a fifth, four-year term Friday during the FIFA congress. But just four days later, he announced that he would resign and call for a new election to find a successor in a process that could take up to a year. Some of the developments in the case around the world: THE BLAZER CASE: Prosecutors unsealed a 40-page transcript of a 2013 hearing in federal court in New York in which former FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer said he and others on the panel agreed to receive bribes to vote for South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup. Blazer pleaded guilty to racketeering and other charges at that hearing. He also said he arranged bribes around 1992 in the vote for which country would host the 1998 World Cup. (Continued on page B12) CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James listened to a question he s been asked in the past and began processing. On the eve of his fifth consecutive NBA Finals, the four-time league MVP who has carried the Cavaliers within four wins of a championship in his homecoming season, James appears to be playing the best ball of his life. Others have said so, some insisting they ve never seen anyone at least no one this side of Michael Jordan perform at such a level. James has been magnificent in these playoffs. Clutch. Focused. Confident. But does the 30-year-old believe he s at the pinnacle of his 12-year career. I think if you put it all together, yeah, he said. If you put everything together as far as my mind, my body, my game. If you put everything in one bottle, this is probably the best I ve been. King James has spoken. Although he has jumped higher, scored more, shot for a higher percentage and had bigger statistical games in nine previous postseasons, James has taken his game to new boundaries, the outer limits as he prepares to take on the Golden State Warriors. He s still doing what few can physically match on the floor, but he s also lifting his teammates, inspiring them, making them believe they can end Cleveland s 51-year title drought. He can still take over a game, and he can get inside it. Through words and actions, James has pushed the Cavs past postseason injuries to Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving, the other members of Cleveland s Big 3, who haven t pulled their weight in the postseason. James has picked up the slack with more rebounds, and by playing point guard. He s brought out the best in sharpshooter J.R. Smith and made reserves like Iman Shumpert and Matthew Dellavedova embrace their roles. He s even caused David Blatt s critics to pause and reconsider what kind of job Cleveland s first-year coach has done. James has never been better. With dedication and hard work, James is exhibiting what he wrote in his letter to Cleveland fans last summer when he said: In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have. Irving didn t fully understand James genius until they became teammates. Over the past few months, the All-Star point guard has grown to appreciate No. 23 s effect on those around him. Irving marvels at James photographic memory and uncanny knack for seeing plays unfold before others. I became a fan to be honest with you, Irving said. I told him that. It s a different feeling when you re on a team with someone you ve watched for so long. When you get to see him up close and the work that he puts in, the dedication that he has, the drive and the will that he has. The true testament of him is that he embodies a leader and the true testament and the word team is embodied with the guys we have. We have so many different personalities, so many different guys, and when you have a leader like that it lifts you up in every situation. Miami changed him. During four seasons in South Florida, a period he refers to as his college years, James learned to be a champion. Playing alongside All-Star Dwyane Wade, James gained a better understanding of the trust necessary to win it all. He had Wade s back and vice versa. They grew into one. The blistering spotlight, too, hardened James, who mastered the ability to block out external noise. Before he went to Miami, injuries like the ones to Irving and Love might have unraveled him. These days, they re just more obstacles. Even in the past, mentally I just wasn t who I am today, he said. My mind, my hard drive, wasn t as big. I m able to handle a lot of situations that I wasn t able to handle at 24 and 25 years old. I just tried to do it by just going out and just playing. Warriors swingman Shaun Livingston said there s an obvious difference in James (version 2015) and the one he played against in past years. He s definitely better, said Livingston. His time in Miami helped sharpen his mental fortitude. They faced a lot of adversity in Miami with all the scrutiny. I think that s helped him on the court, being more calm and not really playing to the outside but just between the lines. James has pieced together an amazing body of work in this postseason already. He nearly averaged a triple-double in the Eastern Conference finals, posting 30.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 9.3 assists in the series, the first player to average at least 30 points, 10 boards, and nine assists in a series. In the previous round, he made a buzzer-beating shot to win Game 4 and followed that with a 38-point, zero-turnover masterpiece in Game 5. He hasn t been perfect. James missed his first 10 shots in Game 3 against Atlanta before getting a triple-double, and he s been sloppy with the ball. But he s on a mission, and within reach of winning a title that would top any of his many accomplishments. I ve been watching a lot of playoffs the last six years, Love said, and I don t know if I ve seen him play better than this. Nobody has.

11 samoa news, Thursday, June 4, 2015 Page B11 Portugal into U-20 World Cup playoffs WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Portugal swept imperiously into the knockout rounds of the Under-20 World Cup with a 4-0 win over Qatar on Wednesday, while Mexico revived its campaign after a woeful opening match by defeating Uruguay 2-1. Two Mexico players were sent off in their first-up, 2-0 loss to Mali, but they demonstrated greater discipline against Uruguay, rallying after conceding a late equalizer to seal the win with a goal in the third minute of stoppage time. Portugal beat Senegal 3-0 in its opening match and guaranteed its place in the round of 16 with an impressive win over the Asian Confederation champion. Qatar s second straight Group C loss ruled it out of contention for the next round, and raised further questions about FIFA s decision to award the 2022 World Cup to a nation which has little footballing pedigree. Coached by Felix Sanchez of Spain, Qatar was unbeaten in the Asian qualifying tournament to earn a place at the Under-20 World Cup for the first time in 20 years. That raised hopes that Sanchez s squad, which contains Europe-based players, would provide the basis of the Qatar team that will qualify for the 2022 tournament as host nation. After being outclassed in two matches in New Zealand and with a match still to play against Senegal, it seems unlikely Qatar has the foundation of a team that will be competitive in Although my team were organized, we could not match the quality of our opponents, Sanchez said. We were more confident in the second half, but after the third goal we knew we couldn t get back in the game. We still have room for progression. Hopefully, this experience will better the players. Qatar must win its final group match against Senegal to have any chance of qualifying for the round of 16. Winger Ivo Rodrigues was Portugal s star, scoring twice and setting up another as Helio Sousa s team maintained its shape and form in occasionally torrential rain. Mexico showed poise against Uruguay to stake its claim for qualification from an increasingly tight Group D. After two rounds all four teams in the group have one win. Serbia s 2-0 win over Mali allowed it to match Mali, Uruguay and Mexico with 1-1 records. It leads the group with a slightly superior goal differential ahead of its last match against Mexico on Saturday. Colombia gave itself a good chance to follow Portugal into the round of 16 from Group C with a 1-1 draw with Senegal. Murray ready for Djokovic clash at the French Open PARIS (AP) Andy Murray became the first British player to reach three semifinals at the French Open on Wednesday. More importantly, he claimed his first win on clay over David Ferrer, one of the best players on the slow, red surface. The third-seeded Murray was in tremendous form in the buildup to the French Open claiming his first two titles on clay and has maintained that level of performance in Paris. I feel like obviously this year I played much better tennis on the clay, Murray said after his 7-6 (4), 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Ferrer on Court Suzanne Lenglen. I feel like I understand how I have to play on the surface better than I did in the past. Unbeaten in 15 clay-court matches this season, Murray showed his credentials as a title contender against Ferrer. And it didn t go unnoticed by his next opponent. Despite struggling with his serve in the opening set, Murray saved two set points in the 12th game and then kept his cool in the tiebreaker while Ferrer made some sloppy errors to lose the set. Murray was more solid on his service games in the second set, saving all three break points and breaking twice. His aggressive returns also earned him a break in the third set and he looked destined for a comfortable win. But Ferrer stayed true to his reputation of never giving up and broke back to level at 3-3. The Spaniard saved a match point when he served at 4-5, broke for a 6-5 lead and sealed the set. Murray entertained the crowd with a vast array of shots and 11 winners to close out the final set in 32 minutes. Now he faces a much bigger obstacle on the road to a third Grand Slam title. The Scot has an 8-18 record against the top-ranked Djokovic and hasn t beaten him since the 2013 Wimbledon final. I feel like to put yourself in position to win against the best players in the world, it s not just about one day before the match. It s about what you do in the whole of the buildup to it, Murray said. And going into the match having not lost on clay this year and having some big wins on the surface is important for me. The Warriors host the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. (AP Photo/Ben Margot) Curry set for his 1st NBA Finals moment against LeBron, Cavs OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry was early in his career, a long way from even thinking about the NBA Finals. His Golden State Warriors were in Cleveland, where LeBron James powered one of the best teams in the league. Curry thinks the Warriors lost the game (they did, one of their 56 losses his rookie season) but certainly remembers the chat. James, already the best player in the game, pulled Curry aside leaving the court and told him to focus on his own effort, ignore any distractions around him, make sure he was always prepared. There is going to be a time when it s all going to work out because you ll be ready for that moment, Curry said Wednesday of James message. And now, it might happen against James. The next chat between the superstars could be Thursday night at center court, before Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Curry is now the NBA s MVP and the Warriors, no longer the lowly laughingstock from his rookie season, won a league-best 67 games during the regular season. They have lost three times at Oracle Arena all season, but that doesn t faze James as he tries to end Cleveland s 51-year pro sports title drought in his first season back there. I ve been in so many loud arenas. This is going to be one of them, he said. I ve played in OKC in the (2012) finals to start off the series. I ve played in Boston. I ve played in Detroit when they were in their heyday. I ve played in Chicago in 2011 to open up the Eastern Conference finals. I ve played in San Antonio. So I ve been in some very loud buildings and this, obviously, I know tomorrow is going to be one of them. But I don t add too much pressure on it. You just go out and you just try to play. He has done that superbly in this postseason, averaging 27.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists in the Eastern Conference playoffs. He has played better basketball he brought up the 2009 East finals loss against Orlando, a month before Curry was drafted but the steady hand he has provided with Kevin Love out and Kyrie Irving hurting has made James as good as he s ever been. For me as leader of the team, it s my job to lead the guys and to perform well, James said. At the end of the day, win, lose or draw, that s all I can ask out of myself and ask out of my guys, and we ll do that. His finals experience he s the first to play in five straight finals since Bill Russell s Celtics of the 1960s is one advantage for the Cavs against a Warriors team with no players who have played for the championship. Warriors rookie coach Steve Kerr, who won five titles as a player, says he and assistant Luke Walton have talked to the team about what to expect now. But what I really found as a player was once you get out on the floor, you just start playing and everything returns to normal, Kerr said. It s still just a basketball game. But you ve got to get to that point and the best way to do that is to try to ignore the chaos as much as you can. For Curry, keeping things normal Wednesday meant a haircut and some sun by his pool. And he knows James will be prepared, just as he once instructed Curry. He s a gamer, Curry said. You know he s going to ready for big moments. Other things to watch in the NBA Finals: KYRIE S CONDITION: Irving, who missed two games in the East finals with knee and foot injuries, plans to play, while realizing he won t be at his best. It s an adjustment, but it s what it is at this point, he said. But I m just going to go out there and will myself to play. CLEVELAND CONNECTION: Kerr played 3 1/2 seasons in Cleveland and will try to join Phil Jackson, whose Lakers beat the Nets in 2002, as the only coaches to beat a team they played for in the finals. He understands why it hasn t been a desired destination for players, saying let s face it, it s cold, but said he enjoyed the experience. I used to go to Indians games and Browns games, and you felt the passion of the sports community there, he said. The fans loved all their teams. So I m really happy for the city of Cleveland, for them to be in the finals. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: Though also in his first year as an NBA coach, David Blatt has reminded reporters all season that he s no rookie after his long, successful career overseas. The coach of 2014 Euroleague champion Maccabi Tel Aviv repeated that message Wednesday, saying he didn t find this at all imposing. So it s thrilling and it s exciting, and it s joyful to be in this situation, he added. Is it all unusual or uncomfortable for me? No. I ve been in situations like this before many times. KLAY S OK: Klay Thompson wasn t cleared to play until Tuesday after suffering a concussion in Game 5 of the West finals, but never feared missing the opener. I had some nagging headaches that night, but when I got some good sleep and some good rest I was all right, he said. So I really knew that Game 1 was never in jeopardy.

He is 4-1 in four career starts against Milwaukee. Lackey has gone 7-1 in 11 regular-season starts and one playoff outing at Busch Stadium since joining the Cardinals after a trade with Boston. Lackey is 4-1 in six starts at home this season. Trevor Rosenthal recorded his 17th save by getting the final two outs on a double play. Milwaukee s Jimmy Nelson (2-6) lasted five innings, giving up seven hits and seven runs (six earned). RAYS 6, ANGELS 5, 10 INNINGS ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Kevin Kiermaier led off the 10th inning with a home run after rookies Joey Butler and Steven Souza Jr. went deep to account for all the scoring in Tampa Bay s fiverun sixth. Rays closer Brad Boxberger, born in nearby Fullerton, entered in the eighth looking for his first four-out save in the majors. He struck out Matt Joyce to strand a runner at third, but gave up the tying run in the ninth on Erick Aybar s sacrifice fly after getting ahead in the count 0-2. The Angels called on closer Huston Street (2-2), and his 2-1 pitch was driven deep into the right-field seats by Kiermaier for his fourth homer of the season. The blown save was the first in 16 opportunities this season for Boxberger (3-3). DIAMONDBACKS 9, BRAVES 8 PHOENIX (AP) A.J. Pollock homered for the second consecutive game, and Arizona rallied to beat Atlanta. The Braves jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second inning, but the Diamondbacks chased Mike Foltynewicz in the sixth and grabbed the lead for good with three runs in the seventh. Yasmany Tomas and Chris Owings each had an RBI single, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia made it 8-7 with a tiebreaking sacrifice fly. David Peralta s slide at home plate beat Cameron Maybin s throw from midcenter field. Tomas had three hits, and four relievers combined for four innings of four-hit ball. Andrew Chafin (4-0) got the win, and Brad Ziegler allowed A.J. Pierzynski s pinch-hit homer in the ninth before finishing for his fifth save in six tries. Atlanta reliever Jim Johnson (1-3) was charged with two runs and two hits in one inning of work. MARLINS 7, CUBS 3 MIAMI (AP) Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Baker hit backto-back homers for the second time in five days, and the Marlins showed lots of life after two months of often desultory play. A bench-clearing confrontation led by injured Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez and Chicago Cubs outfielder Junior Lake ended in a standoff. The Marlins won their second series in a row after a stretch in which they lost 11 of 13 games and fired manager Mike Redmond. New manager Dan Jennings was ejected in the eighth inning for arguing a call on a checked swing. The Marlins Dan Haren (6-2) took a shutout into the inning but got only one out after the confrontation. He allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Jon Lester (4-4) had his worst outing of the year, allowing six runs in five innings for the Cubs. He also went 0 for 2 at the plate and is 0 for 61 in his career. ROCKIES 7, DODGERS 6 DENVER (AP) Nolan Arenado hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, lifting Colorado to a win. With the bases loaded and no outs, Arenado sent a fly to leftcenter. Chris Heisey caught it and threw home, but DJ LeMahieu slid in easily. Arenado was mobbed by teammates after the Rockies overcame a two-run deficit in the ninth. John Axford (1-0) earned the win following two rain delays that totaled 2 hours, 26 minutes. Yimi Garcia (2-2) was one of four relievers in the final inning for the Dodgers, but they couldn t hold the lead. Joc Pederson homered in his fifth straight game, becoming the first Dodgers player to do so in a single season since Matt Kemp in 2010, according to STATS. Pelase send your resume via hhsamsung@yahoo.com or contact Nia at / Officials say the USS Arizona Memorial reopening delayed HONOLULU (AP) Repairs to the damaged dock of the USS Arizona Memorial have been taking longer than expected, which will delay the reopening of the Pearl Harbor landmark at least a day, the Navy and National Park Service said Wednesday. Repairs will continue into the evening and perhaps Thursday, said Bill Doughty, a spokesman for Navy Region Hawaii. Safety inspections of the repairs could take a day or two, said National Park Service spokeswoman Abby Wines. That s in part because officials need to make sure the new passenger gangway leading from the boat and pier to the memorial safely adjusts to high and low tides. Wines said officials now hope to reopen the memorial on Friday or Saturday. They had initially aimed to reopen on Thursday. A mishap involving the hospital ship USNS Mercy and two tugboats damaged the dock last week. The Navy said the Mercy may have hit the dock as the vessels maneuvered out of Pearl Harbor. Waves generated by one of the Mercy s propellers pushed the dock about 10 feet toward the memorial. The memorial honors the 1,177 sailors and Marines on the Arizona who died when Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor in More than 900 servicemen are still entombed on the battleship, which lies in the harbor. Empty tour van rolls cliff HILO, Hawaii (AP) An adventure company owner is relieved that no tourists were in the van that rolled off a cliff and fell 130 feet into Onomea Bay on the Big Island. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the Tuesday morning accident injured no one as the van rolled down an embankment and eventually fell into the surf below. A KapohoKine Adventures news release says the van was still running, but parked with the emergency brake engaged. Company co-owner Tony DeLellis says the company is investigating the incident, which he called isolated. The five passengers and their guide continued the tour Tuesday in a replacement van. Man gets the mandatory life sentence in Hawaii for dealing meth HONOLULU (AP) A federal judge in Hawaii has sentenced a 44-year-old to life in prison for dealing crystal methamphetamine. Prosecutors said Tuesday Alan Mapuatuli won t be eligible for parole. Prosecutors say he received a mandatory life sentence because he had two prior felony drug trafficking-related convictions in California. Mapuatuli was convicted as the result of undercover deal for a pound of meth. The transaction involved an informant. Agents found a leather bag containing the pound of meth when they stopped him as he drove away afterward. Agents also found a backpack with another six ounces of meth, nearly $16,000 in cash and a loaded.45 caliber pistol in his vehicle. A jury in U.S. District Court in Honolulu found Mapuatuli guilty in January after a nineday trial and less than a day of deliberations. Proposal would give Oahu 102 wind turbines HONOLULU (AP) A proposal by a Danish company could set Oahu up to get 30 percent of its energy needs met by floating wind turbines. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports state and federal regulators are meeting Wednesday to discuss Alpha Wind Energy s plan to build 102 floating wind turbines off Oahu s shores. The proposed cost to build the two wind projects is $1.6 billion. The Oahu South project includes 51 wind turbines that would be located 17 miles south of Diamond Head. The Oahu Northwest project proposes 51 wind turbines located 12 miles northwest of Kaena Point. The energy would be sent to Oahu through undersea cables. A spokesman from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management says the agency will review the project s stakeholder and community engagement, as well as its environmental impact. HELICOPTER MOM CAN T STOP KEEPING TABS ON TEENAGER DEAR ABBY: I m having a hard time letting my almost 17-year-old daughter out of my sight. When she walks home from school, I call to make sure she s OK, then call her again minutes later when I estimate she s home. The whole time I worry. I check on her wherever she is, whomever she is with, and if she doesn t answer a call or text, I panic. I have on a few occasions raced home from work in the middle of the day only to find her napping, and I m upset to the point that I ll start crying. I realize this isn t healthy for either of us. Years ago, a little girl in our town, the same age as my daughter, was taken from her home and murdered. I think that plays a part in why I act so irrational. Some of her friends will be driving this summer and I can only imagine there will be trips to the beach (three nightmares in one!) and whatever else. I guess I just want to know how to come to grips. -- FRANTIC MOM OF A TEEN IN FLORIDA DEAR FRANTIC: While your fears are based on a real incident, your daughter is no longer a little girl. You can t protect her forever, and as a teenager, she needs to establish some independence. You would be doing both of you a favor to talk to a licensed mental health counselor NOW about this, because your fears are excessive. DEAR ABBY: I ve reached the point in my life that I can no longer hide fine lines and crow s feet. It is bothering me greatly. How do other women handle it, especially when the deep lines form? I ve talked to others my age and it doesn t bother them. I want to talk to elderly people and ask them, but I don t know how to politely broach the subject. I feel guilty for being vain and I hate that, but it s hard Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren for me to accept. Please help. -- HATING AGING IN EAU CLAIRE DEAR HATING AGING: I don t think anyone, male or female, relishes the idea of being old -- particularly in American society -- unless they consider the alternative, which is death. Men and women handle signs of aging in different ways. Fortunes have been spent on beauty products, with varying degrees of success, although hope-in-a-jar springs eternal. Board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons can minimize the signs of aging with fillers, Botox, lasers and surgery, but they can be expensive. Others accept that beauty comes from within and opt to do nothing to change their appearance. Talking to people in their 70s, 80s or 90s about the changes they have experienced and the lessons they have learned as they grew older is a good idea. I m sure you ll receive some enlightening input. But if it doesn t change your feelings, talk to a doctor because a good one can work miracles. DEAR ABBY: I live in Miami and my mother-in-law lives in Ohio. My husband just told me she is planning to move here and live with us. I don t mind her moving in with us because she is my mother-in-law, but her boyfriend of 15 years is also coming down. Her boyfriend s brother is moving to West Palm Beach. (It s the reason why they are moving.) Does it make me sound petty to say I don t want the boyfriend to move in with us? -- MOTHER-IN-LAW DILEMMA DEAR DILEMMA: Petty? I don t think so. You are not running a boardinghouse. The boyfriend is no relation to you, and if you prefer not to have a stranger living under your roof, that should be your choice.

(AP Photo/Mark Humphrey) Major League Baseball Roundup Continued from page B12 WHITE SOX 9, RANGERS 2 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Jose Abreu homered in a six-run second after missing three games with an injured finger, Chris Sale struck out a season-high 13 in seven shutout innings and Chicago beat Texas. Tyler Flowers added three hits, including a home run, as the White Sox bounced back from a 15-2 loss in the series opener. Sale (5-2) retired the final 14 hitters he faced and struck out Joey Gallo three times before Texas top prospect homered again a night after his record-setting debut. Nick Martinez (4-2) allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings his shortest outing of the season as the Rangers fourgame winning streak ended. Texas announced after the game that Josh Hamilton will be out four weeks with a strained left hamstring, sidelining him just seven games into his return to the Rangers. ATHLETICS 6, TIGERS 1 DETROIT (AP) Sonny Gray pitched eight shutout innings and Billy Burns hit a basesloaded triple as Oakland handed Detroit its sixth straight loss. Gray (7-2) had the Tigers beating the ball into the ground all game, with Oakland s outfielders only making one putout while he was on the mound. He struck out seven and allowed two singles and a walk. Anibal Sanchez (3-7) allowed four runs, five hits and four walks in seven innings. After striking out 20 batters in his previous two starts, he only had one against Oakland. In the second inning, Oakland loaded the bases on a double and two walks, and Burns took an inside pitch the other way for a three-run triple. A tumultuous week Continued from page B9 Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said the government wanted to categorically deny paying any bribes to win the right to host the 2010 tournament. His remarks came before the Blazer transcript was released in New York. The money is part of the U.S. investigation. FIFA sent it in three wire transfers in January-March 2008 to a fund controlled by former FIFA vice president Jack Warner of Trinidad and Tobago. MOST WANTED LIST: Interpol added six men with ties to FIFA to its most-wanted list. The international police force, based in Lyon, France, issued an alert for two former FIFA officials and four executives on charges including racketeering and corruption. Two of the men, Warner and former executive committee member Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay, have been arrested in their home counties. Warner has since been released and Leoz is under house arrest. The Interpol red notice means they risk arrest anywhere they travel. Warner and Leoz were among the 14 people indicted in the U.S. as part of the federal investigation. ROYALS 4, INDIANS 2 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Jason Vargas tossed six sharp innings, the Kansas City offense came through against AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber. Mike Moustakas drove in a run in the first inning, and Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales hit consecutive RBI doubles off Kluber (3-6) in the third to give the Royals the lead. Vargas (4-2) made it stand up in his second start back from the disabled list. The left-hander used a pair of double plays to wiggle out of jams, and limited the streaking Indians to two runs on eight hits while striking out three without a walk. Greg Holland pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save. PADRES 7, METS 3 SAN DIEGO (AP) James Shields threw seven strong innings to remain unbeaten and Will Middlebrooks drove in three runs to help the Padres win a home series for the first time in a month. Shields (7-0) cruised through five innings, permitting just one runner to reach second base. The right-hander allowed two runs and six hits overall. He struck out four, walked two and used three double plays to avoid major damage. Shields set his personal best for consecutive wins to start the season. He began 6-0 with Tampa Bay in The Mets were hurt by three errors two by third baseman Ruben Tejada that led to three unearned runs. Dillon Gee (0-3), just off the disabled list, also hit a batter with a pitch with the bases loaded. RUSSIA AND QATAR: Russia and Qatar are the next two World Cup hosts, but those tournaments are coming under ever more scrutiny amid the corruption probes. Still, neither country seems worried that they could be stripped of the 2018 and 2022 events. We welcome the Office of the Swiss attorney general conducting its own work, Qatar Football Association head Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al- Thani said in a statement. In Russia, where President Vladimir Putin last week accused the U.S. meddling in soccer affairs, officials were equally confident. Today I absolutely don t see any kind of threats, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told state TV. THE NEXT PRESIDENT: The race to succeed Blatter has started, with former France soccer great Michel Plantini at the top of many lists. Platini, the president of European governing body UEFA, has also been keeping a low profile since Blatter s announcement, but he is expected to speak in the coming days in Berlin, where he will attend Saturday s Champions League final. Another possible replacement is Prince Ali Bin Al- Hussein of Jordan, who lost to Blatter in Friday s election. According to the Jordanian Football Association, the prince is looking into whether he should be in Tennis Team prepared Continued from page B9 Speaking to Samoa News, Young said that the idea of sending our tennis players to play in severals tournaments around this time not only gives them a chance to test their fitness and skills but also is something to test their preparations and how good they are doing so far before the Pacific Games. These tournaments are really good for our players, not only to test their strength and fitness but also to make them feel how pressured the game is when they get onto the court in PNG, said Young. Speaking with Wasko via , she told Samoa News that competing at the Fiji Open tournament was another big step for her preparation for the Pacific Games, and she s now coming back home to assist with the team s training. Our team has been training hard and currently trains 6 days a week. The biggest obstacle we will face is the court surface in PNG. We currently train on hard courts and the surface in PNG will be synthetic grass tennis courts, she said. Wasko won her last bronze medal with Salani Lesa at the Doubles Ladies team division during the South Pacific Games in Samoa in 2007, and she said that her main goal for this year is to win medals for American Samoa. Another tennis player looking to win a medal for American Samoa, is Charity Tagiso. Tagiso, a senior at Fa asao/marist High School told Samoa News that while this is her first time in the Pacific Games, she s already aware of the pressure and how tough the game canl be, because she was a member of the American Samoa Tennis team that competed at the Junior Championship last year. She said, it may be at a different level of play, with the Pacific Games much more tough and difficult, but I will try my best to give everything I have to assist my team during the Pacific Games. Playing together with some of our senior tennis players gives me the skills and knowledge that I m striving for, and also motivates me to keep training until I reach my goal to win gold for American Samoa, Tagiso concluded. The tennis team will be competing in 4 categories in PNG: the team event, singles, doubles and mixed doubles. line to replace Blatter without even holding another vote. Under normal circumstances, African soccer president Issa Hayatou would be next in line if an interim president was needed. Many more candidates are expected to come forward in the coming months. WARNER SPEAKS: Warner made a televised address in Trinidad on Wednesday night, saying he will prove a link between soccer s governing body and his nation s elections in I will no longer keep secrets for them who actively seek to destroy the country, Warner said. Warner also said in the address, which was a paid political advertisement, that I reasonably actually fear for my life. Still, a half-hour after the speech aired, Warner appeared at his Independent Liberal Party s rally held under a canopy on a residential street. At least a couple hundred people were present when Warner spoke, many of them having not seen the televised remarks. Warner said he has documents and checks that link FIFA officials, including embattled President Sepp Blatter, to the 2010 election in Trinidad and Tobago. I apologize for not disclosing my knowledge of these events before, Warner said. C Y M K
