The single engine Beechcraft, carrying Suleman and his 17-year-old son Haris crashed around 9:50pm Tuesday night, a mile out from the Pago Pago International Airport. While Haris body was recovered in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the older Suleman is still missing. Despite bad weather, search and rescue efforts by the police continued on the Marine Patrol Boat and government tug boat Sa ilele, both of which were out and about beginning at 6am yesterday morning. The search was scheduled to be suspended at 6pm yesterday at the expiration of the 72 hours mandatory search time and Marine Patrol Captain Tulele Laolagi who has been leading the search and rescue team since the tragic incident occurred, confirmed this. Utuali i said he has recommended that the search time be extended, but noted that this decision is entirely at the discretion of Lt Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga, who is also Acting Governor. He pointed out that divers were supposed to go out yesterday morning, however due to the bad weather they were unable to use either of the two methods recommended to assist with the search. (Full details of methods to be used by divers in yesterday s edition.) HAWAIIAN AIR SEATS FOR SULEMAN FAMILY Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin wrote to Mark Dunkerley, President and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, asking for the airline to offer complimentary round-trip airfares to the Suleman family and also appealed to the people of American Samoa who are booked on Monday night s flight, to give up a seat in order for a member of the Suleman family to escort the body of Haris back to Indiana. Hours later Hawaiian Air responded to Faleomavaega s request and assured that a seat has been reserved for a member of the Suleman family to accompany Haris home, Faleomavaega said in a press release late Friday. The Congressman thanked Hawaiian Air President Dunkerley and Vice President Ann Bottecelli and their staff for making this possible. SUPPORT FROM INDIANA A close friend of the Suleman s, 24-year-old Omar Malik, said they have created a hashtag to urge ASG and the national government to send aid to the United States Coast Guard so they can keep searching. Here s the link: #BringBabar- Home and this is the link that they are using to raise funds for his search and rescue: aroundtheworld4edu.weebly.com/donate-tosearch--rescue-operations.html. Malik told Samoa News via that he s known Babar Suleman his whole life. He was like my father. Our families were next-door neighbors for almost 20 years. First in New Jersey and then moving to Plainfield, IN. He told Samoa News that they are clinging to hope he is alive and can be found. Omar also asked Samoa News to keep him posted on any developments so he can pass them on to family and other friends. Family members were expected to arrive on last night s Hawaiian Air flight. COAST GUARD EFFORTS According to the USCG website, the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu is coordinating search efforts with the HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, a patrol boat from the American Samoa Marine Patrol and the Tug Sa ilele. On-scene weather conditions are 7 to 10 feet seas, 15 to 20 mph winds. Visibility is approximately seven nautical miles with scattered clouds and rain showers. Debris recovered from the crash includes: two survival suits, life jackets, Emergency Locator Transmitter, a seat, and heavily damaged sections of the fuselage. The search area was developed by watchstanders at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu using the Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System. The Hercules crew dropped a Self-locating Data Marker Buoy to calculate current drift, water temperature and sea conditions. That information is then used in the SAROPS to develop the optimal search area. The total amount of area searched and hours expended are, 3,396 square miles (1,799 square miles Friday, 1,597 square miles Thursday). The cumulative amount of square miles searched is equivalent to the area of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. Coast Guard and partner agency assets had been searching for a total of 63 hours at the time the media release was posted. The DHS Director told Samoa News yesterday that the Coast Guard would suspend their search on Sunday. tusia Ausage Fausia O le po anapo na taunu u ai i laufanua o Amerika Samoa ni isi o sui o aiga o ali i pailate e to alua, lea na pau le la va alele i le po o le aso Lua na te a nei i gatai o le malae va alele i Tafuna. 3 samoa news, Saturday, July 26, 2014 Page 3 DoH confirms three Chik Virus cases by Samoa News staff Department of Health has now confirmed the presence of chikungunya sometimes called the Chik Virus - in American Samoa with three cases confirmed as health officials urge the community to clean their surroundings where mosquitoes could breed. Last week, DoH issued a health alert saying that the department and LBJ Medical center have detected an outbreak of an illness with symptoms of fever, rash, and joint pains. The alert said more than 100 patients had been hospitalized and the department suspected the outbreak was caused by one of the mosquitospread diseases currently prevalent in the South Pacific. These diseases include dengue fever, chikungunya, and zika viruses. In a Health Advisory issued Thursday, the Health director Motusa Tuileama Nua said early results of lab testing of specimens from the dengue-like illness, patients have tested positive for chikungunya virus and negative so far for other viruses for which the specimens were tested. Motusa didn t say in the advisory how many confirmed chikungunya cases were found, but DoH official Dr. Saipale Fuimaono said Thursday night on KVZK that there are three confirmed cases, adding that at least health officials are aware of the presence of this virus in the territory. Motusa did explain in the advisory that chikungunya is a dengue-like virus spread by the Aedes mosquito and it causes fever, rash and arthritis. It is rarely fatal. Some patients develop joint pain that can last for weeks up to a year or more, he said. Recommendations for treatment include taking Tylenol, lots of rest and lots of fluids, according to the advisory, which also says that danger signs of the virus include any bleeding, vomiting, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath. It further recommends avoiding taking aspirin, Alleve and Mortim; while Tylenol is safe. DoH reiterated earlier recommendations for protecting your family from mosquito bites: wear long pants/sleeves when outside or use insect repellent with DEET. Additionally, clean your yards by eliminating trash and items with water where mosquitoes breed. Since the dengue-like illness outbreak, Samoa News has received reports of many residents waiting at the emergency room to be seen by a doctor. Because of the outbreak in the territory, Radio New Zealand International reports that Samoa s Ministry of Health has issued an alert to make its residents aware of the issue in the territory due to the proximity of the two islands. The ministry has also strongly advised airlines and shipping agents to stop travelers from American Samoa who are diagnosed with symptoms of the disease. People have also been told to avoid travel to American Samoa unless it is for urgent family matters. (AP) They sent a creepy feeling through several Southern California families, but authorities say the person who left porcelain dolls on doorsteps didn t mean any harm. The Orange County Sheriff s Department said Thursday that someone had left the dolls wearing nightgowns and lace dresses at as many as eight homes in a San Clemente neighborhood this week. The families were worried because they felt each doll resembled a young girl who lived in the house, setting off an investigation and call for public help in finding who had placed them. But later Thursday the sheriff s department said it found the person responsible and the intent had been goodwill. No further details were released. Sheriff s Lt. Jeff Hallock told City News Service the dolls and their apparent resemblance to real girls left families feeling creepy. As many as eight homes have had porcelain dolls left on their doorsteps. Families in each of the homes where porcelain dolls were left, voiced concern that the dolls resembled their daughters. The investigation continues in an attempt to discover their origin. (AP Photo/Orange County Sheriff s Department)

4 Page 4 samoa news, Saturday, July 26, 2014 THE BOB FRANKEN COLUMN Open-Government Charade By Bob Franken How is it that in and around politics, we manage to trivialize nearly every crisis and at the same time, turn what s trivial into a crisis? The debate over the flood of child immigrants to U.S. borders is typical: Here we have a wrenching human dilemma with awful choices about removing children who have fled their brutally dangerous countries, often sent by their desperate parents. It s a highly complex matter, as so many are. But it is mostly reduced to pettiness by political hustlers, with shameful cooperation from those of us in media. The debate was taken over by arguments over whether President Barack Obama should make a trip down to the facilities where the kids are being taken, for what would amount to a photo op -- theater, as the president called it. To his credit, he refused to go, in spite of the cheap shots heaped on him by nervous candidates from both parties, and their consultants, always at the ready to fire off a sound bite or tweet. And that wasn t the only fiery question that obscured the real tragedy. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, trying really really hard to promote another run for the White House, made a big show of pandering to his party s hard-liners by announcing he would not be seen shaking Mr. Obama s hand when POTUS visited his state. That was not the kind of photo op Perry wanted to go viral. In case you care, Perry was seen shaking Obama s hand, and Obama didn t head to the border, which is certainly a good thing, because it would have been a massive disruption at exactly the worst spot for any added craziness. So, by the dismal ways we usually tabulate scores, it was Obama 2, Perry 0. Absurd, isn t it? The borders are still overwhelmed by the kids, who sooner or later will be sent back to their native Central American killing fields where brutal gangs run rampant. The question is, How soon or how late? Congress and the White House are engaged in still more game-playing over how much money to budget to accomplish this, and how it should be used. Also, there s a totally useless blamefest over which party was responsible. Obviously this is not the only time-pressing issue that has been reduced to a photo op. Politicians (almost all) contrive them constantly, oftentimes reducing human beings, including those involved in a tragedy, to props to sell whatever the officeholder/candidate/both is peddling. Those of us in media lap up all this phoniness, because it s our only way to get precious video or still images that make us look like we re on top of things, which usually we re not. But this way, we can pretend we re an aggressive, unfettered press holding our government accountable. Barack Obama certainly has been a frequent participant, which probably qualifies as an understatement. With all the technological advances in transmitting information, we continue to be held captive to contrived events and spoon-fed information while most of our open government is conducted in old-fashioned secrecy. No wonder officials get so angry about leaks. They show everyone that their conduct needs to be challenged and certainly not trivialized. (c) 2014 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd., Inc. The Icom R series has redefined general coverage receivers and their portability. This Icom R-2 was my buddy last week in Xinfeng, Taiwan as deadly Typhoon Matmo approached. [Photo: Barry Markowitz] COOL Stuff Bad Daddy: Great Icom by Barry Markowitz As Typhoon Matmo approached Taiwan last week, my Icom R-2 gave me all the English language info I needed in the semi-rural town of Xinfeng in Northwest Taiwan. This follows my Icom tradition of using an Icom R-1 during Cyclone Val in Tulaele, Upolu, and my Icom R-5 during my CNN Samoa & Japan Tsunami coverage. Besides great wide coverage of international shortwave broadcasts, airplanes, airport control towers, some maritime, some first responders, am/fm, satellites and even scans selected stored memory channels or entire bands... the key to Icom s magnificence is that it all fits in your shirt pocket. Nothing is useful if it isn t with you when you need it. A classic example was my twelve times larger Sony ICF 2010 in the after effects of Cyclone Ofa. I was a rifle shooter competing in the Auckland 1990 Commonwealth Games. Air New Zealand s flights were canceled, so all I heard from my Auckland University dorm room was on the Sony. On return to Samoa several days later, the input buttons began failing, with no power the large batteries became hard to come by and expensive. I couldn t drag the Sony with me to salvage my destroyed Apia store. It was essentially a boat anchor. When Cyclone Val hit hard a year later I had a rechargeable groundbreaking Icom R-1 with an optional slide on AA battery accessory power supply (with my Aussie solar panels on the roof I was a 1991 Western Samoan Yuppie totally ahead of the dramas). With the Icom R-1 and no regular power or guaranteed radio news broadcasts, Radio New Zealand and Radio Australia became my most precious sources of facts, instead of local rumors. Ironically I was honored to become an on air correspondent for both, covering Manu Samoa vs All Blacks first test, David Tua s first pro bout, and Apia s huge GST protests. Our Samoa Times gave Western Samoa the freshest printed world news in the Nation, because my Icom R-1 delivered it just moments before our printing deadline. Remember Western Samoa in the early 90s... no Internet, no CNN? Icom has subsequently debuted the superb Icom R-6 (same size as the above R-2 but labels your stored frequencies, scans infinitely faster at 100 channels per second, batteries last 15 hours, and has a very solid water resistance up to military standards. Icom s superstar Icom R-20 is 2 1/2 times the R-6, but incorporates SSB (Single Side Band) capability to listen to Ham Radio operators... and an SDHC memory card based recording system. Ok, the truth is I am a bad daddy, bailing out of Taiwan a few hours before Typhoon Matmo struck. I boiled water for my daughter, charged up her back up batteries, left her cans of Spam, tuna, brown rice, and a Goal Zero portable solar panel & Guide 10 Plus system. I struggled with concerns about staying with all my Cool Stuff... but came to the conclusion that she was safe, has great workmate buddies in her apartment building and didn t a cranky old whiner bugging her. It worked out fine. Lots of winds in her town, brief power outage, and no fatalities. On the other hand, San Francisco International was hit with freak thunder storms that damaged navigation equipment, my flight to Portland was cancelled, my Icom R-2 kept me briefed in the lounge after hours of gate changes... and finally I ended up in another US Mainland city being fed at Golden Corral by a Hawaiian and Tongans... with my bags still chillin in Portland, Oregon. So I am living out of my carry on bags, with a few Cool Stuff basics. A true punishment for a bad daddy that abandoned his daughter in a foreign country s typhoon zone. Maybe my younger daughter will still tolerate me. More adventures ahead, lots of new Cool Stuff being presented by companies for my input and review next week... and of course my July Samoa News paycheck which teaches the ongoing lesson that being mativa is as much fun as five-day-old bread.

The Israeli military says Saturday s 12-hour pause began at 8 a.m. (1:00 a.m. EST, 0500 GMT). It warned the military shall respond if terrorists choose to exploit the lull to attack Israeli troops or civilians. The military said operational activities to locate and neutralize tunnels in the Gaza Strip will continue. Previous humanitarian cease-fires have been cut short by fighting. Civilians on both sides have been hardest hit over the past 18 days. Nearly 900 Palestinians and 40 Israelis have been killed. The lull was agreed upon by both sides after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry failed to broker a weeklong truce as a first step toward a broader deal. Obama aide says impeachment THREAT taken seriously WASHINGTON (AP) One of President Barack Obama s top advisers says the White House takes seriously the possibility that House Republicans could pursue impeachment of the president. Senior White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer told reporters Friday that the GOP has already opened the door for impeachment by contemplating suing the president over his use of executive authority. He says that any further executive action Obama may sign this year on immigration will up the likelihood of Republicans pursuing that path. Pfeiffer was dismissive about how good a case Republicans could make to come up with impeachable offenses. But he says it would be foolish to discount the possibility that Republicans would at least consider pursuing impeachment. Fighter relieved he won t be charged in stabbing LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) A professional mixed martial artist says prosecutors decision to not charge him in the fatal stabbing of an intruder at his New Mexico home is a relief. The District Attorney s office in Las Cruces announced Thursday that an investigation did not produce evidence to prove that Joseph Torrez killed 25-year-old Sal Garces on Jan. 1 without legal justification. Sheriff s officials have said Torrez fatally stabbed Garces after Garces and other people forced their way into Torrez s home. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Torrez spoke publicly about the matter for the first time after prosecutors announced their decision. Torrez says he acted to protect himself and his family but that he finds it difficult to think about taking another man s life. Air Canada plane told to circle Tel Aviv airport TORONTO (AP) An Air Canada flight had to circle Tel Aviv s airport for 10 minutes after air traffic control said the conditions needed to be confirmed as safe for landing. Airline spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur said Friday Flight AC84 was advised to circle by Israeli Air Traffic Control shortly before 12 p.m. local time. She says the plane altered its course about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Ben Gurion airport and landed 10 minutes later without incident. She did not say why. Arthur says the return flight to Toronto departed Tel Aviv about two hours later. The airline plans to operate this evening s flight to Tel Aviv. Flights by Air Canada and other airlines to Tel Aviv resumed Thursday after a suspension Tuesday following a Hamas rocket strike nearby. Nigeria nabs accused $6 million Facebook fraudster ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) Nigerian security forces say they have arrested a suspected internet fraudster accused of stealing nearly $6 million from people who thought were paying fees to apply for government jobs. Emmanuel Okeh, a spokesman for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps said Friday that the suspect, Michael Ogun, 44, is accused of using Facebook and other websites that appear to represent government agencies, including customs, immigration and security. The pages urged applicants to pay small fees to apply online for jobs. Okeh said the scam is one of many in Nigeria that are specifically designed to extract small sums from Nigeria s unemployed. Conservative estimates put Nigeria s unemployment rate at about 24 percent in a nation of more than 160 million people. Nigerian security forces say they never recruit online. US says China tested anti-satellite missile WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. says China has tested a missile designed to destroy satellites and is urging Beijing to refrain from destabilizing actions. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the non-destructive test occurred Wednesday. She said a previous destructive test of the system in 2007 created thousands of pieces of dangerous debris in space. Harf said Friday that the continued development and testing of destructive anti-satellite systems threaten the long-term security and sustainability of the outer-space environment that all nations depend upon. China s state-run Xinhua (shihn-wah) news agency, citing a Defense Ministry statement, reported a successful missile interception test conducted from land within Chinese territory late Wednesday. Xinhua did not refer to it as an anti-satellite system. It said such tests could strengthen Chinese air defense against ballistic missiles. Woman gets 4 years for stealing $5M from nonprofit WASHINGTON (AP) A woman known for donating gowns from her Maryland bridal shop to military brides has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for stealing more than $5 million from her nonprofit employer. Forty-four-year-old Ephonia Green of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was also ordered to pay restitution at her sentencing Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington. Prosecutors say Green embezzled the money while she worked at the Association of American Medical Colleges, which administers the admissions test used by medical schools. Court documents say Green opened bank accounts in names that closely resembled legitimate vendors. The Washington Post reports that Green cried as she apologized in court, saying she had heartbreak every day over the theft. Toddler crashes Jeep, runs home to watch cartoons MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. (AP) Police say a toddler crashed a Jeep into an Oregon home, then ran back to his home to watch cartoons. Authorities say the 3-year-old boy who was wearing only a diaper climbed into the Jeep Tuesday evening and knocked it out of gear. Witnesses say it rolled down the street, through an intersection and into the house, causing minor damage. KPTV reports an officer found the boy on a couch watching TV as if nothing had happened. He said his parents weren t home and another relative was sleeping. Police cited 22-year-old Brennan Pennington for failing to supervise a child. 9 C Y C Y M K M K By: The Associated Press The deadly crash of a teenager on an around-the-world flight brought new attention to the dangers of record-setting youth adventures, and questions about how young is too young to fly a plane. Yet pilots and flight instructors say that while some question the ability of kids and teens to deal with unforeseen difficulties, training matters more than age. They say the real danger is when pilots push the boundaries of safety to set records for speed or youth, as Indiana teenager Haris Suleman, a newly licensed pilot, was attempting when his plane went down in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the 17-year-old s plane to crash as he attempted to set a record for the fastest flight around the world in a single-engine airplane with the youngest pilot in command to do so. Here are some key questions and answers about the issue: HOW OLD DO YOU NEED TO BE TO GET A PILOT LICENSE? The Federal Aviation Administration allows 16-year-old student airplane pilots to make solo flights, but they re prohibited from having passengers and are heavily supervised by an instructor who closely monitors their flight from the ground. A private airplane pilot s license can be obtained at 17. It often takes more than required 40 hours of flight time to be ready to pass the licensing exam. CAN CHILDREN FLY WITH INSTRUCTORS AT YOUNGER AGES? The FAA doesn t restrict young teenagers or children from taking flying lessons, and programs offer various degrees of experience. The Experimental Aircraft Association runs a Young Eagles program were children as young as 8 can go on flights and help maneuver some controls, but the pilots are always in control of the plane, said spokesman Dick Knapinski. For example, a pilot may allow a child to help with a gentle turn. Spencer Clark, a 15-yearold from Atlanta, said he started flying lessons at age 11, progressing from maneuvering some controls and contacting the traffic control tower to flying the plane by himself. Spencer said starting lessons as early as he did gave him years to practice for the solo flights he s almost allowed to make. Some people questioned whether it was safe to start flying that young, but Spencer said kids and teens often make better students by starting with less ego and self-assurance. Often, he said, they have more dexterity and quicker reflexes from years playing with videogames or remote-controlled planes. WHAT ABOUT AROUND-THE-WORLD ADVENTURES? Some in the aviation industry say being a young pilot isn t as risky as trying to be a record-setting pilot. Many questioned such efforts after 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff, her father and a flight instructor were killed in a 1996 crash in Cheyenne, Wyoming, during her attempt to become the youngest person to fly across the country. The National Transportation Safety Board later ruled pressure from national media attention may have contributed to the crash. Stephen Belt, a flight instructor, pilot and chair of the aviation science department at Saint Louis University, said that while it s not clear what caused Suleman s plane to crash, generally anyone trying to set a record is putting a samoa news, Saturday, July 26, 2014 Page 9 After teen pilot s crash, how young is too young? here. Landsberg said the teen s After Jessica s crash, Congress in 1996 passed a bill banning record-setting attempts by unlicensed pilots and barring licensed pilots from supervising such activities. But there haven t been any significant pushes by lawmakers or others to raise the age to obtain a pilot s license which in some states comes before a teenager can get a driver s license. When you hear about tragedies like this, naturally people would raise questions, but for decades, it has really been an effective measure, said Knapinski with the Experimental Aircraft Association. The important thing, Knapinski and others said, is not looking at the age of the pilot but what really happened to cause the crash. The vast majority of flights go off without a hitch, Belt said. It s still the safest form of transportation and I think Picture that s regardless yours of age. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham) Family feud sparks revolt at grocery store chain WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) It s been called a David vs. Goliath story, a Tale of Two Arthurs and even the ultimate Greek tragedy, but the characters in this drama are not Biblical or literary figures. They re grocery store owners. A workers revolt at the Market Basket supermarket chain has led to empty shelves, angry customers and support for a boycott from more than 100 state legislators and mayors. Industry analysts say worker revolts at non-union companies are rare, but what s happening at Market Basket is particularly unusual because the workers are not asking for higher pay or better benefits. They are demanding the reinstatement of beloved former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, whom they credit with keeping prices low, treating them well and guiding the company s success. The New England grocery store chain is embroiled in a family feud featuring two cousins who have been at odds for decades. While earlier squabbles between Arthur T. Demoulas and Arthur S. Demoulas were fought in courtrooms, this dispute has spilled into the stores. For the past week, warehouse workers have refused to make deliveries to Market Basket stores, leaving fruit, vegetable, seafood and meat shelves empty. Workers have held huge protest rallies and organized boycott petitions through social media, attracting thousands of supporters. Customers are defecting to other grocery stores. In some cases, customers have taped receipts from competitors to Market Basket windows. We are going to go somewhere else from now on, said Soraya DeBarros, as she walked through a depleted produce department at the Market Basket in West Bridgewater this week. I m sad about it because of course I want to keep the low prices, but I want to support the workers. Despite threats by new management to fire any workers who fail to perform their duties, 300 warehouse workers and 68 drivers have refused to make deliveries. Eight supervisors have been fired. The new executives have assured workers they are not planning drastic changes in the way the company is operated and have urged them to return to work. On Friday, the company again appealed to workers to return, saying they won t be punished or face any change in compensation and benefits. Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, who is running for governor, and New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan have publicly supported the employees. If you had told me that workers at a grocery store would walk out to save the job of a CEO, I would say that s incredible. There is usually such a gulf between the worker and the CEO, said Gary Chaison, a professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester. Market Basket stores have long been a fixture in Massachusetts. The late Arthur Demoulas grandfather of Arthur S. and Arthur T. and a Greek immigrant opened the first store in Lowell nearly a century ago. Gradually, Market Basket became a regional powerhouse, with 25,000 employees and 71 stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The feud dates back to the 1970s, but the most recent round of infighting began last year when Arthur S. gained control of the board of directors. Last month, the board fired Arthur T., sparking the current uprising. Workers are fiercely loyal to Arthur T. You know the movie, It s a Wonderful Life. He s George Bailey, said Tom Trainor, a district supervisor who worked for the company for 41 years before being fired last weekend over the protests. He s just a tremendous human being that puts people above profits. He can walk through a store, and if he s met you once, he knows your name, he knows your wife, your husband, your kids, where they are going to school. Earlier Friday, board members said they will consider an offer Arthur T. made this week to buy the company. Consistent with its fiduciary obligations, the Board will evaluate and seriously consider this proposal, along with any other offers previously received and to be received, the board said. The board also decried what it called the negative behavior of some current and former employees. It is now clear that it is in the interests of all members of the Market Basket community for normal business operations to resume immediately, it said. As the board met, up to 10,000 employees, customers and supporters attended another protest rally at a Market Basket store in Tewksbury. Employees said they believe the fight between the family members loyal to Arthur T. and Arthur S. is largely over money and the direction of the company. They say Arthur S. and his supporters have pressed for a greater return to shareholders. Arthur T. and his supporters have focused on keeping prices low. Many employees are distrustful of Arthur S. and two co-chief executives who were brought in from outside the company: Felicia Thornton, a former executive of the grocery chain Albertsons, and Jim Gooch, former president and chief executive at RadioShack Corp. The company statement Friday acknowledged the strain this change of leadership has placed on our associates. Valerie Burke, a worker in the West Bridgewater store, said she s worried about her job. It s a great company to work for now, but we are worried it won t stay that way, she said as she picketed outside the store Tuesday. Arthur S. has not spoken publicly, while Gooch and Thornton have communicated only through prepared statements. Steve Paulenka, who started in 1974 as a bag boy and rose to facilities and operations manager before being fired last weekend, said he sees no end to protests unless Arthur T. is reinstated. A big part of me doesn t like what s going on it s like breaking your favorite toy on purpose, he said. But we ll get through this.

Chen, Samoa News Correspondent PAUL IETI MAKES THE CUT, HEADS TO NEW YORK TO PERFORM AT RADIO CITY American Samoa s singing soldier Paul Ieti has survived Judgment Week on America s Got Talent and he is now heading to New York to perform at Radio City Music Hall for a chance to win the grand prize of $1 million. Ieti, the son of Maua and Akenese Ieti of Aoa, made the initial cut during the auditions last month and had to perform again this past Wednesday, where the final list of performers was officially announced. During the nationally televised program, Ieti - when told that he will be heading to the Big Apple - was in tears when he spoke about his parents and how much he missed them. He called his mother to tell her the good news while the cameras were rolling. I am so proud of you son, his mother Ake said over the phone when Ieti told her he had made it. Ieti said it has been a difficult time for him, having been away from his parents since August 2012, being deployed to Afghanistan, and chasing his dream without his parents being there with him. Just to see my mom smile at me, he said, before breaking down into tears. Ieti said he will always carry - with pride - American Samoa and his family name. He thanked everyone for their prayers and support and said that no matter what happens, to God be the glory. Ieti s next performance is set for Monday, August 4 and can be viewed on Channel 5. ASDHS SPONSORS TWO-DAY TRAINING The American Samoa Department of Homeland Security held this week a two-day, 16-hour direct delivery training course aimed at promoting awareness and understanding the hazards involved when incidents affecting the local healthcare system occur. Mike Gavin and Vince Slominesky from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service conducted the training. Participants of the training sessions were given an insight on the healthcare system, including the hospital and infrastructure, and taught how to find and address issues with regards to preparing for emergency situations, so the response can be better. The Dept. of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funded the training. DPS Commissioner William Haleck said yesterday that a make-up test date for the dozens of people who were scheduled to take the police academy entrance exam this past week but didn t show up is uncertain. Whether there will be a make-up test date at all is also not known, he said. This past week, over 100 locals were scheduled to take the police academy entrance test but only 39 showed up, according to Haleck. Of that number, he said, only three passed. Add that to the seven who passed the test last month and DPS only has 10 possible recruits, although the target number is 20. We might just have to make do with the ten that we have right now, Haleck said over a telephone interview with the Samoa News yesterday when asked if the no-shows would be given a chance to make-up the missed test date. He said he needed to speak to Commander Tauese Sunia, the test administrator and the head of the DPS training division, about where we go from here, in addition to talking to manpower to see what other options we have. Earlier this year, an open call was made to local residents interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, by taking part in the police academy and becoming cops. An estimated 400 people expressed interest. Over 300 people showed up to take the test the first time it was offered and of that number, only seven (2%) passed. Haleck said in an initial interview that both he and Governor Lolo Moliga have been looking forward to getting the police academy off the ground because of the current shortage of manpower within the DPS but not being able to find qualified candidates will probably push the academy start date back from August to September. Passing the test is only the first part of the hiring process, which includes passing a physical examination, psychological evaluation, a background check, and an oral interview. The test is the first part of many involved in the hiring process so some of the people who passed the test may not pass the other requirements, Haleck said last month. We want to do this the right way, by hiring good, qualified people. It has been a practice within the American Samoa Government to hire people because of family relations but the Governor wants to do this the right way, using a merit system so we can hire the best candidates we can find. CHILDREN S CULTURAL MAINTENANCE SUMMER PROGRAM CLOSES The 2014 Children s Cultural Maintenance Summer Program ended yesterday with a special performance of Samoan memory verses, songs, and dances that were well received by the proud parents who were in attendance on the front lawn of the Jean P. Haydon Museum in Fagatogo. During the month-long program, kids were taught how to weave, carve, play the ukulele, and perform the traditional Samoan siva. All the items that were created by the students were presented to them yesterday to take home. This year, over 50 local youngsters between 7 and 17 years old participated in the program, which aims to preserve the Samoan culture and traditions by teaching kids the importance of traditional art forms and how to create things using local resources.

Obama to attend summit in September WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama will attend a United Nations summit on climate change in September. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited heads of state and other leaders to the Sept. 23 summit in New York. The U.N. says the goal is to spur governments, industry and civil groups to make new commitments to addressing climate change. The summit comes one year before world leaders will gather in Paris for global climate talks aimed at securing a deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. General Assembly meetings and a Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting. Obama traditionally speaks at both events. The White House announced the trip Friday. 81-year-old saved after several days stuck in tub COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Police have rescued an 81-year-old Colorado woman who spent several days stranded in her bathtub, apparently after taking a tumble. Worried neighbors called Colorado Springs police on Wednesday because they hadn t seen her recently. An officer found her later that day, dehydrated and disoriented and unable to get out of the tub. She was taken to a hospital. Her name and condition haven t been released. Police say she lives alone. Police said Friday it s not clear how long she was stuck but one neighbor hadn t seen her for 11 days. The officer found newspapers and mail piled up at her door. NORAD Captain Jennifer Stadnyk said the two fighter jets from Ohio flew with the plane out of U.S. airspace as a precaution. Toronto police said Ali Shahi, 25, has been charged with uttering threats and endangering the safety of an aircraft. Police Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said he s Canadian. Chapman said the flight, carrying 183 passengers and six crew, landed safely and no Continued from page 6 one was injured. Chapman said the flight will depart again for Panama on Friday afternoon. 16 Page 16 samoa news, Saturday, July 26, 2014 C M Y K Board doesn t mince words Continued from page 1 JUDGEMENT & SENSITIVITY RATING 1.7 UNACCEPTABLE The report notes that the CEO on this department is rated very poor, his judgment on leaving for annual leave while hospital was being under scrutiny and in jeopardy with the CMS, reflects no sensitivity and showed he couldn t care or less about the health and welfare of the people of American Samoa. Furthermore the report says the CEO is self-serving and provides lip service only and has no respect of the people of American Samoa and their culture. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS RATING 1.21 NEEDS IMPROVEMENT The CEO has never completed a task requested by the Governor s office or the Fono on time, through he has always blamed others for his shortcomings. He often cited that he wears too many hats, unfortunately it seems that these hats are too big for him. His lack of management skills in CMS certification requirements may have led to the IJ status of nursing as cited by the last CMS survey alleging this mishap may have been avoided. The CEO lacks management skills to deal with his subordinates and has often put the board in a compromising position. BOARD RELATIONS RATING 1.9 UNACCEPTABLE The report allegedly claims that the CEO undermines the authority of the board and has, on many occasions circumvented the will and authority of the board and is insubordinate. MEDICAL STAFF RELATIONS RATING 1.9 UNACCEPTABLE The CEO is very confrontational with the CMO (Dr Iotamo Saleapaga) and has no respect for the Deputy CMO (Annie Fuavai) and continues to refuse any authority of the Deputy CMO and claimed that this position was created without input. Furthermore the report says that this is an outright lie as the Deputy CMO was created because of the CEO s request to have Dr Ledua be the DCMO, however this was refused by Dr Ledua. The report alleges the CEO created an adversarial relationship between the CMO and the doctors where there was none. COMMUNITY RELATIONS/POLITICAL EFFECTIVE- NESS RATING 1.9 UNACCEPTABLE The evaluation report claims that the CEO is a manipulator and a smooth talker.
