[photo: AF] Cam Newton: I m an African-American QB that scares people CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suggested for the first time Wednesday that race may play a factor in why he s become a lightning rod for public criticism. I m an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven t seen nothing that they can compare me to, said the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton. The No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL draft out of Auburn, Newton has his share of detractors who either don t like how he plays, his celebrations or his abundance of self-confidence. Newton, a leading league MVP candidate putting up recordbreaking numbers, said he learned a long time ago that he can t please everyone. People are going to judge, and have opinions on things I don t have control over, Newton said. The stout and speedy Newton is beating teams with his arm and his legs, throwing for 35 touchdowns and running for 10 this season. He has helped lead the Panthers (17-1) to their first Super Bowl since Carolina plays the AFC champion Denver Broncos on Feb. 7 in Santa Clara, California. Newton acknowledged being leery of talking about how others may perceive him. I think it s a trick question, Newton said. If I answer it truthfully it s going to be Aw, he s this or that. But I will say it anyway. I don t think people have seen what I am or what I m trying to do. Newton said he hasn t changed, and has previously responded to his critics. I said that prior to me being in this situation, Newton said of being misunderstood. But when I said it then it was like, Oh he is immature, or, Oh he s young and this that and the third. I felt a certain type of way then and I feel a certain type of way now nothing has pretty much changed. They talk about maturity. They talk about skillset.... The only thing that has changed (about me) is that we re winning now. Panthers coach Ron Rivera doesn t believe Newton should have to fight perceptions about race. (Continued on page B3) Boxing Clubs ready for King of the Rock Championships by Ausage Fausia, Samoa News Reporter Coaches and boxers from nine boxing clubs around the island are part of the first boxing championship in American Samoa called, King of the Rock Championships for Olympic-style Boxing, which kicks-off of this coming Saturday at the Pago Pago Youth Center. The clubs are praising the move by the American Samoa Boxing Federation to host this event, as a huge step forward for boxing in the territory. Speaking to Samoa News this week, head coaches from the three main boxing clubs say they are ready for the four championship matches and believe that their boxers are well prepared for the challenge, and they are willing to show their best this coming weekend. The three boxing clubs are Maliu Mai Boxing Club, under the leadership of head coach Sala Sanele, Lupelele Boxing Club, under the leadership of Nikolao Mageo and Mapusaga Fou Boxing Club, led by Leilua Aoao Tafa. In an interview with Samoa News this week, Leilua said that six of his boxers are part of the event this week and are ready to take up the challenge. We ve being training for over 5 weeks now and the whole team is ready both physically and mentally, he said. Leilua explained that fitness is the main weapon to win a fight, and that s what we ve been working on over the last five weeks and I hope that our team is ready to show what they have. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) Before his whirlybird spin in the air forever etched him in NFL lore, two-time Super Bowl champion John Elway called his mother on the team flight from Pittsburgh after winning the AFC championship on Jan. 11, I said, Mom, guess what? We get to go back to the Super Bowl! Elway recounted. She said, Do we really have to go back? After so many Super Bowl letdowns three losses by an average of 32 points she wasn t sure watching her son face the two-touchdown favorite Green Bay Packers was such a good idea. Many Denver fans are similarly pensive as these Broncos (14-4) prepare to face Cam Newton and the mighty Carolina Panthers (17-1) in Super Bowl 50 as five-point underdogs. They swear they ve learned their lessons, however, after getting shellacked by Seattle 43-8 in the Super Bowl two years ago. They won t be beating each other up this time in full-pads practices in the lead-up to the Feb. 7 kickoff. They re praising their opponents aplenty a lot like the Broncos talked up the Packers 18 years ago. They won t be soaking in the nightlife quite so full throttle once they get to San Francisco on Sunday. They ll certainly prepare for a loud crowd this time after former coach John Fox famously turned down the speakers at practices figuring it would be like a home game only to see that plan ripped apart in all of 12 seconds. Players and coaches have already taken care of tickets and flights for family and friends and all the distractions that go with the Super Bowl so when they return to work Thursday their focus is on football. We got spanked last time. I felt bad for a month and a-half, two months, said wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, the lone bright spot that night in the Meadowlands when Seattle s sideline-to-sideline supremacy rendered his Super Bowl-record 13 receptions a footnote. He played great, Elway said in the aftermath of that blowout. If we all played like he did, we d have won. Elway was asked after the last Super Bowl letdown how long it took him to get over his three Super Bowl losses. I m not over them yet, he shot back. I just added this one to it. Elway remade his team after its 35-point loss to the Seahawks. He committed $109.5 million by adding free agents DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward. The trio has helped turn Denver from an offensive juggernaut that had scored an NFL record 606 points behind Peyton Manning s record-breaking run in 2013 into a defensive team. Two years after taking the league s No. 1 offense to the Super Bowl, the Broncos bring the NFL s No. 1 defense, one that battered Tom Brady with an incredible 23 hits Sunday. The Broncos also changed their offensive identity this season with the hiring of coach Gary Kubiak, who installed a better ground game and a plan for Manning to share snaps with Brock Osweiler in practice. The plan came in handy when Manning missed six weeks with a foot injury and Osweiler kept the Broncos rolling right along. And the ground game finally came on behind a new O-line in Kubiak s zone blocking scheme. Even though it s been inconsistent, I like what we re doing offensively, Elway said. I like the system, obviously, having played in it and knowing that you can win world championships with it. Elway changed coaches a year ago, befuddled by Fox s teams losing their last game by a cumulative He said he wanted a team that would go down kicking and screaming. That toughness has been on display all season. Denver s model is no longer lighting up scoreboards but grinding it out, hanging around and making big plays at the end. It s a formula that s seen them win an NFL record 11 games by seven points or less, including over Pittsburgh and over New England in the playoffs. The mindset to me is that you know we play for 60 minutes even though we haven t consistently played well for 60 minutes you know our mindset has been there. And that s why this team is a tougher team because it s a mentally tough one, Elway said. This time, it s Newton and the Panthers bringing the highoctane offense to the Super Bowl and the Broncos sporting the star-studded secondary and ferocious front-seven. They re hoping this dynamic makes a difference and like the Broncos teams of 98 and 99 they ll make their nervous mothers proud.

3 Aikman says experience can be overrated going into Super Bowl NEW YORK (AP) If Cam Newton has the type of Super Bowl debut Troy Aikman did, the Carolina Panthers will be in good shape for the Super Bowl. Newton will be making his first appearance in the Super Bowl next month against Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who is playing in the big game for the fourth time. I feel that experience is often times overrated because of my own experience, said Aikman, who 22 of 30 for 273 yards and four touchdown passes as the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl 27 when the Dallas Cowboys routed the Buffalo Bills The year we went to our first Super Bowl in 1992 we were the youngest team in football. We played in the Super Bowl against a team that had a wealth of playoff experience and Super Bowl experience, and we dominated that football game. Aikman, a Hall of Famer, said Newton has also shown he can handle pressure during his career. I just think Cam Newton is a guy who doesn t get overwhelmed by the moment, he said. He seems to thrive in the spotlight. I don t think this stage will impact him in a negative way. Coming off a dominating win over Arizona in the NFC championship game, Carolina enters the Feb. 7 game in Santa Clara, California, as a favorite. However, Aikman, who won all three Super Bowls he played in, thinks Denver shouldn t be overlooked, especially with Manning making possibly the final start of his career. Denver s a great story, Peyton Manning s a great story, he said. Denver is really good defensively and that s certainly going to be a key. I think he s (Manning) going to be the sentimental pick in what will likely be his last game, but it s going to a tough, tough task against this Carolina team. African-American QB Continued from page B1 I think he has always strived to have that separation, Rivera said. I don t think he wants to be known as an African-American quarterback; he wants to be known as a quarterback. I think that is what drives him, to be able to transcend those boundaries, which I think is great. Rivera, who is Hispanic, said he has battled that notion to some degree himself. It really should be about your merits more than anything else, the coach said. More about what you have accomplished, what you have done. Rivera said some people may simply not like Newton because of his personality. The All-Pro quarterback plays the game with open enthusiasm, pointing his arms forward after running for a first down, doing the dab in the end zone and pretending to rip open his shirt like Superman. He gets his teammates to pose for pictures on the sideline near the end of games when the outcome is no longer in doubt. None of that bothers Rivera, who said Newton needs to remain true to himself. I think some people believe you should be stoic when you play this game, Rivera said. But a lot of people disagree and think you should have fun. This is a kid s game. I know there is a lot of money involved, but at the end of the day it s about entertainment. If you aren t enjoying yourself, don t play the game it s that simple. Newton s teammates have their own theories about the anti- Newton uproar. Panthers cornerback Charles Tillman said it may be because Newton wins in an unconventional way, unlike a traditional NFL quarterback, and fans aren t used to that on Sundays. Some people can t accept that, Tillman said. He is setting a precedent as far as for how quarterbacks are now and how they may become. He s in a league of his own. He has created his own category for winning. Tillman likens Newton, in some respects, to Tim Tebow. People would say, Oh Tebow is not a good quarterback, but the guy won games and took his team to the playoffs, Tillman said. All Tim Tebow did was say that he loved Jesus and he prayed all of the time and people hated him for that. Carolina defensive tackle Dwan Edwards senses the hatred of Newton stems from the QB s popularity. In sports, people want to root against people, whether it s LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant) or (Michael) Jordan, Edwards said. There are a lot of people who don t care for them and no matter what they do, it s Oh that s the wrong way. That s not what we re used to. It s tough, because people are going to hate you regardless. Aikman, who dealt with concussions in his playing career and retired after the 2000 season, said he sees a big change in how the league handles the issue now. Back when I was playing, there was none of those things (protocols) in place, he said. If someone suffered a concussion, it was unlikely they would ever miss a game, and now we re seeing players miss multiple games because they haven t shown signs that they re capable or ready to come back. And he said despite the league s improved handling of the issue, hard hits are not going away any time soon. As long as we re wearing helmets and shoulder pads, there s collisions between these big, physical, fast guys, head injuries are going to be a part of it. As far as the play on the field, Aikman added, the rules that have been implemented, it seems the league has done just about as much as it possibly can do, short of just taking the pads off and saying we re no longer playing contact football. Aikman is on a tour to raise awareness of melanoma through the Melanoma Just Got Personal initiative, which was developed to help patients and supporters understand advanced melanoma. About 73,000 people in the United States are newly diagnosed with melanoma annually, but if the disease becomes advanced (known as unresectable or metastatic melanoma), it s difficult to treat and can be fatal. Only about 20 percent of people will survive for at least five years following a diagnosis of late-stage disease. Aikman said he noticed a spot on his left shoulder in 1998, went to a dermatologist and was diagnosed with stage II melanoma a week later. He said at that time he didn t know much about it, but got educated about it pretty quickly. Once it gets beyond the early stage, like when I caught mine, it s tough, he said. samoa news, Thursday, January 28, 2016 AMERICAN SAMOA POWER AUTHORITY Materials Management Office Page B3 Po Box PPB, Pago Pago American Samoa Phone No.: (684) Fax No.: (684) REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP) RFP No: ASPA Date & Time Due: February 8, 2016 Issuance Date: January 08, 2016 No later than 2:00 p.m. local time The American Samoa Power Authority issues a Request For Proposals (RFP) to invite qualified firms to submit formal, written proposals for: TA U HYBRID SYSTEM DIESEL GENERATOR SETS Submission An Original and five copies of the Proposal must be submitted in a sealed envelope marked: Ta u Hybrid System Diesel Generator Sets. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak) LeBron leads Cavaliers to rout over the Suns, Lue gets the All-Star nod CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James scored 21 points before sitting out and dancing in the fourth quarter, Kevin Love added 21 points and 11 rebounds, and the Cleveland Cavaliers stormed away in the second half for a victory over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. Sluggish for the first 24 minutes, the Cavs opened the second half with a 12-0 run and sent Phoenix to its 17th loss in 19 games. Cleveland improved to 2-1 under new coach Tyronn Lue, who took over last week when David Blatt was fired halfway through his second season. The win means Lue and the Cavs coaching staff will represent the Eastern Conference at the All-Star Game on Feb. 14 in Toronto. Rookie Devin Booker paced the Suns with 16 points and P.J. Tucker and Markieff Morris had 13 apiece. WARRIORS 127, MAVERICKS 107 OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson scored a season-high 45 points, Stephen Curry got going after halftime and so did Golden State, which avenged one of its four losses this season by beating Dallas. Curry hit three quick 3-pointers after intermission as Golden State overcame a sluggish first half, and the reigning MVP finished with a modest 14 points on a night the Warriors role players and bench provided a balanced effort. Thompson had his second 40-point game of the season and sixth of his career, shooting 14 of 20, 7 for 12 on 3-pointers and making all 10 of his free throws. Chandler Parsons scored 23 points for Dallas, which handed the Warriors their second loss of the season, on Dec. 30. SPURS 130, ROCKETS 99 SAN ANTONIO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and San Antonio rebounded from its worst loss in three years to bash Houston and remain undefeated at home. San Antonio (39-7) has won 25 straight at home to open the season and 34 consecutive dating back to last season. Aldridge bounced back as did the rest of the Spurs after he was held to five points and three rebounds in a 30-point loss to Golden State on Monday. San Antonio had 32 assists and shot 56 percent from the field in snapping Houston s three-game winning streak and handing the Rockets their worst loss of the season. James Harden had 20 points and Dwight Howard added 13 for Houston. CLIPPERS 85, HAWKS 83 ATLANTA (AP) Jamal Crawford scored 21 points and Los Angeles won again without Blake Griffin, holding off mistake-prone Atlanta. The Hawks turned it over a season-high 23 times but still had a chance to force overtime when Chris Paul lost the handle on an inbounds pass after Al Horford s free throw. Atlanta got it back with 6.7 seconds left and inbounded to Paul Millsap, who drove against Luc Mbah a Moute and got a good look at the basket but came up short on a running one-hander. The horn sounded as the Clippers celebrated their 14th win in 17 games. Los Angeles won for the second straight night after word leaked that Griffin would be out 4-to-6 weeks, having broken his shooting hand by punching a staff member. He apologized for the incident on Twitter late Tuesday, and his teammates kept on winning. DeAndre Jordan scored 13 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, foiling the Hawks strategy to keep sending him to line by making 6 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter. Jeff Teague led Atlanta with 16 points. JAZZ 102, HORNETS 73 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Rodney Hood scored 24 points and Utah avenged a double-overtime loss to Charlotte last week. Utah broke loose in the second quarter with a 20-2 run, highlighted by a pair of alley-oops from Hood to Rudy Gobert. Trevor Booker added a pair of dunks that pushed the lead to Charlotte worked the lead down to single digits in the third quarter, but a trio of 3-pointers from Trey Burke pushed the lead back up to 19. Gordon Hayward finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Utah. Gobert grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots. Kemba Walker was held to 15 points after scoring a franchise-high 52 against the Jazz last week. THUNDER 126, TIMBERWOLVES 123 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Kevin Durant had 27 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and hit two huge shots in the final two minutes to help Oklahoma City win a second-straight, fast-paced thriller. Russell Westbrook had 24 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds, while Enes Kanter had 23 points and 10 boards for the Thunder, who beat the Knicks in overtime the night before. Oklahoma City outrebounded Minnesota to go home from a four-game road trip at 3-1. Zach LaVine scored 35 points on 14-for-17 shooting, Andrew Wiggins added 20 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 19 points, 13 boards and five assists for the Timberwolves. Minnesota shot 55.6 percent and had 31 assists, but missed 10 free throws. CELTICS 111, NUGGETS 103 BOSTON (AP) Avery Bradley matched his season high with 27 points, and Boston beat Denver for its fourth straight victory. Kelly Olynyk added 17 points and seven rebounds. Isaiah Thomas finished with 16 points and five assists. The victory ties a season-high win streak for the Celtics. Danilo Gallinari and Will Barton led Denver with 23 apiece. The Nuggets lost for the fourth time in five games. PISTONS 110, 76ERS 97 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Andre Drummond had 25 points and 18 rebounds, and Detroit rallied to beat Philadelphia. Drummond, who came into the game having gone 1 for 14 from the line in the last two games, even hit seven of his 12 free throws. Reggie Jackson added 27 points, while rookie Stanley Johnson had 18 off the bench. Jeremi Grant scored 21 points for the Sixers, while Nerlens Noel had 20. The 76ers played without starters Jahlil Okafor and JaKarr Sampson, who both missed their second game in two nights with the flu.

5 samoa news, Thursday, January 28, 2016 Page B5 Wentz and FCS counterparts trying to make NFL impression MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Those NFL executives who couldn t make the trek to North Dakota to check out Carson Wentz in college are now getting a close-up view of the player in the mix to be the first quarterback drafted. The former North Dakota State star is the most prominent of a number of FCS products trying to make an impression on NFL teams throughout this week at the Senior Bowl. They ll be lining up against guys who played at programs like Alabama and Ohio State all week, with pro coaches, scouts and executives watching closely. I think a lot of the small-school guys come in here with a little chip on their shoulder, something to prove, Wentz said. It s just exciting to finally get out there and face these guys. The 6-foot-5, 233-pound Wentz might be the top prospect at the Senior Bowl after returning from a broken wrist to lead North Dakota State to its fifth straight national title. Bison teammate offensive lineman Joe Haeg is also trying to show NFL teams ahead of Saturday s game that he can play at that level. From William & Mary defensive back DeAndre Houston- Carson to Southeast Missouri wide receiver Paul McRoberts and Harvard offensive tackle Cole Toner, they re finally on a level playing field with those FBS guys. Wentz is vying with California s Jared Goff and Memphis s Paxton Lynch to be the first quarterback selected. He returned from a broken right wrist, sustained on Oct. 17, to lead North Dakota State to a win over Jacksonville State in the championship game. Wentz isn t trying to carve a reputation among NFL types but live up to it. Yes, he was scouted in the fall but Fargo, North Dakota is a tough place to get to, said Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage, a former Cleveland general manager. There were probably a handful of (general managers) that made it out there. But to be on this stage in front of this many people, I mean this can be almost a coming out party for him: OK, this is who Carson Wentz is, this isn t just a rumor or hearsay or talk. The other guys from FCS schools face similar challenges, even if they re not being scrutinized quite so closely as a potential firstround quarterback. Some were undersized or late bloomers who were barely recruited by major colleges or not at all. Wentz grew from a 5-8, 125-pound beanpole as a high school freshman in Bismarck, North Dakota and didn t play quarterback as a junior because of an injury. In North Dakota, it s hard to get found in general, let alone missing a junior year, Wentz said. I came in my senior year at 6-5 and 200 pounds and kind of came out of nowhere. Teammate Haeg was only recruited by Division II schools, but opted to walk on at North Dakota State. He s packed on about 80 pounds since his freshman year and gone from not being able to bench-press 225 pounds to lifting 380. I would definitely say there s a lot of people that kind of look down on FCS players because obviously there s a lot of great players at the FBS level, Haeg said. But also there s a lot of great players that are overlooked at the FCS level. When we get on the field, it doesn t matter where you re from. We re all on the same practice field. We re all out there competing. McRoberts is the first Southeast Missouri player to make it to the Senior Bowl. He got a few recruiting letters but no scholarship offers from bigger schools coming from a small school program. It was kind of the same deal, me not playing against anybody, they didn t want to take a chance on me, McRoberts said. That s kind of how I was my whole life. Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, who s leading the North team, said seeing how FCS players fare against bigger-school products is part of the evaluation process. Obviously those guys have had a lot of success or they wouldn t be here in this game, but seeing them compete against guys from the programs at the highest level is important, Garrett said. If there s any shortage of confidence from Wentz and his FCS counterparts, it s not evident off the field. The biggest question mark obviously is going to be, can he play at this speed, can he play against this talent? Wentz said. I think I m going to prove that. By the end of the week everyone s going to no longer question that, and I m excited to prove it. The game was pretty good and both teams were giving their best for the whole match. My hat goes off to the Cougars team and coaches for a good match, but there s a lot of work that my team needs to do, especially on the batting side, the girls need some more practice on how to hit the ball, said Wayne. Despite his team s huge loss to the Fa asao/marist team, Wayne believes that his team will come back and will be in the play-offs. Cougars head coach Victor Langkilde was very pleased with his team s performance, saying that he s hoping that his team will continue to play the same way. It s been 8 weeks now since we began practicing and from what I ve noticed today (last Tuesday), there are a few things that need to improve to the team s performance, said Langkilde, adding their next game Thursday (today) is against Samoana High School. Langkilde thanked the Tafuna Warriors for the great match, and especially to his team for coming on strong and finishing the match on a high note. Langkilde, who also the president of the American Samoa Baseball Association, thanked ASHSAA for hosting several tournament for the students every year. This is all about developing the sports and I want to acknowledge the hard work by ASHSAA and everyone who has put together these programs and tournaments for the students, as we know that the future of our youth in sports is in our hands, so we have to work hard and give them the chance to show their talent, he said. As a teacher and a principal at Fa asao/marist High School, Langkilde also acknowledged the support from parents, families and friends, who come down to watch the kids play. Boxing Clubs ready for King of the Rock Championships Continued from page B1 He stated, This championship is a huge step forward to improve boxing in American Samoa, and for each fighter who is part of this event, he or she has to come well prepared for the challenge, not only to win his or her fight but also to entertain the fans, because the fans are paying for their entrance, and they re looking forward to watching a good fight. Twenty fighters will take part in the upcoming event, which includes 6 undercards with the mix of five male and one female bout, and four title matches for four championship bouts. Leilua confirmed that 3 of the club s boxers will be in 3 of the 4 title matches. The 3 boxers are Malae Malae, who is fighting in the heavyweight division, Ageki Smiley Fuimaono for the middleweight division, and James Wilson, fighting in the light heavyweight division. Head Coach and trainer for the Maliu Mai Boxing Club Sala Sanele told Samoa News this week that all of his 8 fighters are ready for the championships and that his team is ready to take the challenge, and he believes that based on the experience and the skills his fighters have, they will return home victorious. Out of 8 fighters, 4 of them will be fighting in all 4 title championship bouts, while the other 4 fighters, which includes one female boxer, will be part of the six undercards for the night. The top 4 fighters who are vying for the title championships are Sui Palaunimiddleweight division, Alofa Mataafalight heavyweight division, Pasefika Ikitau- heavyweight division, and Ofisa Ofisa- super heavyweight division. Sala said that one of his fighters competing in this championship brings experience from the international amateur boxing level where he has competed, and it will be a good example for young and new fighters. Pasefika was one of our fighters who competed at the World Boxing Championships in Australia last year, where he won a silver medal for American Samoa, and he will be one of those fighters that people will love to see in the ring, bringing with him some mixed international level style of fighting for the night, Sala said. Sala believes that these sorts of local competitions between the local boxing clubs will help to develop the sport on island, and will also help to prepare our local fighters before they head out to compete in international level competition. The weigh-in will be on Friday afternoon, around 4p.m. The doors will open at 4p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016, before the official opening of the championship at 5p.m. Tickets are on sale right now: $5 for adults and if you buy your tickets at the door, it will cost you $10.

CHARLES, Mo. (AP) New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson avoided jail time Tuesday after pleading guilty to reduced charges connected to a high-speed police chase in suburban St. Louis. A St. Charles County judge sentenced the former University of Missouri star to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service after his July arrest for driving a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur at speeds up to 143 mph on an interstate highway near his offseason home. The five misdemeanor charges included one for resisting arrest, for which Richardson could have spent up to one year in jail. Richardson s guilty plea to the most serious offense will be wiped from his record if he successfully completes probation. He also pleaded guilty to speeding and running a red light and must pay $1,050 in fines. Two other traffic offenses were reduced to muffler violations to which the 25-year-old St. Louis native also pleaded guilty. Leslie Knight, a spokeswoman for county prosecutor Tim Lohmar, called the plea bargain a typical offer that wasn t influenced by Richardson s status. That s what we would do for anybody, she said after the brief hearing. Richardson was accompanied by a 12-year-old relative and two male passengers when he was stopped. Police say they found a loaded semi-automatic handgun under a floor mat and detected a strong marijuana odor. Richardson s car went through a traffic light before the Jets player turned off all of its lights and pulled into someone else s driveway. Police pulled behind the car and ordered Richardson and the adult passengers out of the car at gunpoint an officer said he saw Richardson reach for something between his feet. He was not charged for the gun possession or marijuana, nor were his passengers charged. He declined comment after the sentencing hearing. Richardson served a four-game, early season suspension for violating the NFL s substance abuse policy. Defense attorney Scott Rosenblum said he doesn t expect Richardson to face more discipline related to the Missouri case under the league s personal conduct policy. Three previous hearings were postponed until after the 2015 NFL regular season. Rosenblum said his client was remorseful and has since sold the luxury car, preferring instead to drive a SUV. He absolutely understands that his behavior was not responsible, he said. SWilliams within 1 win of 7th Australian Open title MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Serena The first set was over in 20 minutes. Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren LONG MARRIAGE IS LEFT IN LIMBO BY WIFE S ATTRACTION TO WOMEN DEAR ABBY: After 27 years of marriage, my wife told me she is attracted to other women. To my knowledge, she has acted on this only once. Every day I wonder where our relationship stands. One day she can t see herself without me; the next, she says we should divorce. I don t know if I should end this or wait to see where it goes. I will need counseling if we divorce, but currently I can t afford it. Yes, I love her, but what matters most to me is that she is happy. I don t have anyone else to talk to about this. Any suggestions? -- MR. D. IN CALIFORNIA DEAR MR. D.: After 27 years of marriage I can only imagine how shocking your wife s revelation must have been for you. That she is ambivalent about your marriage must be deeply painful because you are being treated like a yo-yo. The book The Other Side of the Closet, by Amity Pierce Buxton, Ph.D., has been mentioned before in my column and has proven helpful to others in your situation. There is also a support group called the Straight Spouse Network ( which offers emotional support after a wife or a husband comes out as yours did. Please don t wait to read the book and visit the website. I think you will find them comforting. DEAR ABBY: I have a large family consisting of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Looking through my photo albums, I can t complain that I don t have enough photos of my children, but it s a parade of tongues. Their mothers all post photos on social media with their tongues hanging out. The children then mimic their moms and their photos are disgusting as well. I would love to have photos of my children minus the slimy organ. Is this accepted behavior in our society now? Please, can someone enlighten me as to the inspiration of this repulsive action? -- CLOSED-MOUTHED IN THE SOUTH DEAR CLOSED-MOUTHED: I suspect it originated back in the 1970s when Gene Simmons of Kiss licked his way to the top of the music charts. Lately, Miley Cyrus took up the torch and is keeping it burning brightly. Children often stick out their tongues when they are forced to have their picture taken or are trying to be funny, but I don t think Gene and Miley fall into that category. Quite the opposite, in fact. DEAR ABBY: Sometimes I ll call a close friend or business associate for lunch with the goal of having a quality one-on-one conversation on a wide range of topics. After the lunch is set, more than one of them has then invited other people I know, but with whom I do not have the same quality relationship. It is not a pleasant surprise. I find it irritating, because it invariably changes the dynamic of the conversation. I never say anything about it, but it bothers me. Is my reaction reasonable, or should I just roll with this? -- THWARTED IN DALLAS DEAR THWARTED: Your reaction is perfectly reasonable. The first time it happened, you should have shared your feelings with the person who did it. It has happened again because you didn t speak up. Now you will have to warn the person you re inviting in advance.
