Summary of duties Responsibilities: The role will initially be positioned as a trainee role allow the holder of the role to grow and develop the following responsibilities: Capacity planning and design of T database environments Physical database design based on information provided by application development teams nsuring that T evelopment database standards are followed atabase expert providing advice and guidance to T Analysts and evelopers nvestigating database performance problems and recommending remedial action Main uties: The role will initially be positioned as a trainee role allow the holder of the role to grow and develop to support the following duties: nstalling and upgrading database software Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for database systems To work with T developers to design database structures that support their applications mplement and modify database structures To develop, document, communicate, and enforce database standards To conduct research on database technologies in support of T evelopment goals and commitments, and recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and flexibility To provide database consulting expertise, direction, and assistance to T evelopment technical staff Applying suitable security controls within the database environment nsuring compliance with database license agreements Controlling and monitoring user access to the database Monitoring and optimizing the performance of the database Planning for backup and recovery of database information 2. XPRNC Method of Assessment Recent practical experience within a team which has: Managed Oracle databases and servers and been Page 2 of 5

3 responsible for database performance, performance tuning and problem resolution. Managed backups and recovery of databases. xperience of development practices e.g. Waterfall/Agile Has experience of designing databases that are used by at least 1000 users. Has experience of data integration between Oracle and SQLServer and/or ngres databases. xperience of designing and building Oracle procedures/functions/triggers with PL/SQL. xperience of technical training of individuals. 3. KNOWLG/SKLLS Knowledge of: The installation of the Oracle BMS software (10g or 11g). The continuing configuration and administration of the Oracle BMS software (10g or 11g). Knowledge of UNX/Linux operating system including shell scripting. Systematic, logical approach to database design, management, monitoring and problem investigation. Ability to address the requirements of the business by identifying suitable Oracle technology which will benefit the organisation. Ability to produce design specifications that meet user requirements. Can provide accurate and appropriate documentation for systems. Knowledge of Oracle ASM, ata Guard and RAC. 4. PRSONAL QUALTS AN ABLTS Organisation and planning skills to manage own work within the constraints of team and project plans. Ability to act on own initiative but also be a good team member. Ability to communicate technical knowledge to team members., R AF, Keenness to learn new programming and technical skills. About the unit/department NFORMATON ABOUT NFORMATON TCHNOLOGY (T) nformation Technology provides and supports all central University T services and is responsible for the institution's Technical nfrastructure. n addition to this service and support provision, it develops systems to support the business requirements of the organisation. The system development function in nformation Technology is responsible for the development and maintenance of the University's key operational applications. The main systems support Student and Customer Administration, Course evelopment and Production, Finance and Staff. Teams of Analysts and evelopers are responsible for developing and maintaining systems for particular business areas. There are also specialised teams responsible for ata Administration and Systems Architecture. While much of the software is developed in-house, there are a number of packages. These include applications from the Siebel Customer Relationship Management suite, MC ocumentum s Content Management as well as Finance Ledger, Payroll and Stock Control packages. n-house developed software includes transactional websites to provide self service facilities for students and staff; information websites; decision support; workflow and student and staff records management. The Higher ducation sector in ngland has undergone dramatic change in the past three years as institutions adjust to reductions in state funding for teaching and as students bear more of the cost of their education. As well as these cost drivers, the entry of more private providers to the sector and the increasing consumer power of high fee-paying students will put a premium on service delivery and cost efficiency. n turn, this will throw emphasis on the development of robust, efficient, enterprise-scale T systems to increase efficiency and customer choice. 6.
