1 Job Description Post/Job Title: Principal PHP Developer Postholder: Ref: /ITS65 Location including building: Lansdowne Campus (Studland House) / University Wide School/Support Service: Group/Section: IT Services IT Services / Digital Solutions Team Normal hours per week: 37 (Some flexibility will be required in order to ensure that key time scales and deadlines are met). Grade: 7 Accountable to: Special conditions: Digital Solutions Architect Due to the nature of the role, working unsocial hours will be required. Staff will be required to carry a mobile phone and be contactable at reasonable times. You will be required to be on-call on a pre-arranged rota basis, but no more frequently than one week in four. Job Purpose 1. To apply user centric design to XAMP based systems which are adopted at BU either developed in-house or supplied by a third party. 2. To develop PHP based solutions in a way that delivers value at the earliest opportunity, demonstrating innovation by using the latest web technologies and standards. 3. To provide a level of support that exceeds expectations and at the same time not impacting project delivery. 4. To provide ongoing enhancements XAMP based systems (drupal, wordpress) in order that they continue to support organisational activities, conform to legislation as well as delivering improved experiences for both staff and students. 5. To provide a source of consultancy and education to other areas of the University regarding standards, technologies and best practices in web application design and integration. 6. To facilitate and support the growth and knowledge exchange of a PHP developer community comprising of BU academics, students and professional service staff. Main Responsibilities 1. Gather and analyse requirements from a variety of stakeholders; documenting them using various techniques to ensure they are understood by all. 2. valuate options and design or recommend innovative solutions that meet complex project requirements. 3. Provide comprehensive estimates based on requirements analysis in order to help understand the scale of development required and the tasks in involved. 4. Work constructively with others within the Digital Solutions Team regardless of discipline or position.

2 5. Work in collaboration with other professional services and faculty staff to deliver high quality solutions and provide service excellence. 6. Identify any risk areas during project delivery and ongoing support and propose mitigation strategies. 7. Identify, communicate and help adopt service improvements within IT Services and the Digital Solutions Team. 8. Provide expert knowledge regarding the configuration, development and maintenance of Drupal CMS. 9. Provide expert knowledge regarding the configuration, development and maintenance of websites running on the XAMP stack. 10. Develop and maintain the continuous integration strategy, preparing release guidelines and ensuring all releases are clearly and fully packaged, documented and delivered in a production ready state. 11. nsure there is sufficient knowledge transfer between staff and appropriate documentation to be able to provide adequate service provision regardless of individual availabilities and eradicate single points of expertise. 12. Form alliances and relationships with key stakeholders and contacts across the university to enable effective delivery of services, raising the profile of IT Services and ensuring clear and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders. 13. nsure compliance with corporate standards for information systems, security and technology are in line with relevant legislation and audit requirements. 14. nsure that all data exchanges between business systems are timely and accurate. 15. nsure all activities adhere to established standards regarding application and database development, source configuration management, change control and other related work processes. 16. Provide high quality 3rd line operational support, problem diagnosis and follow-up action to system owners and IT Services colleagues for the services maintained by Information Systems and where necessary liaise with suppliers to resolve issues. 17. Through documentation, coaching, mentoring and demonstrating ensure that all other developers have the knowledge and skills to produce high quality code, providing operational support, problem diagnosis and follow-up action. 18. Work with all departments to support staff and ensure user needs are being met effectively. 19. valuate upgrade releases and requests for change in order to advise IT Services colleagues on appropriate delivery models, integration issues and the impact of changes. 20. Monitor applications and data to ensure robust, resilient and consistent, quality services. 21. Configure and administer developed information systems, integration services, access controls, web services, web publishing, and document management and application security. 22. Advise customers on the preparation of tender and specification documents to ensure that they comprehensively cover application, system and security requirements. 23. Devise and influence any required project plans, and pro-actively manage projects (including the supervision of assigned Developers and Senior Developers) to meet timescales, quality metrics, service levels, budgets and resources. 24. Maintain an awareness of new technologies and products which may contribute to the University s information systems strategy and advise managers where appropriate. 25. Maintain a current knowledge of legislation appropriate to information systems, such as data protection and computer misuse. 26. 3 Current Organisation Chart Dimensions of Role Web based Systems within Bournemouth University are growing in number, complexity and scope, including systems designed to support document management and learning and teaching. Increasingly they must exchange data, securely and reliably, with each other and with external agencies. The delivery of these systems involves a complex environment to ensure the services are responsive, reliable, robust and secure. To deliver and maintain these services we require a proven ability to investigate and resolve problems while following established standards and procedures. The post-holder will have the ability to quickly assimilate requirements and advise colleagues in the areas of web applications and platforms. The Principal.PHP Developer role will support and develop the full range of our corporate web applications, but will not be expected to have prior experience in all the business packages we use. However we require the ability and motivation to develop the service offering of PHP development and support in order to provide a first class service to our customers. The post-holder will be responsible for supervising Developers whilst working together on projects. xpected Contacts The team s customers are throughout the schools and supporting departments at many levels across the University. The post-holder will work directly with University managers to advise and develop solutions; in particular the post-holder will work on services provided for and by Marketing & Communications, Student Administration and Financial and Commercial Services. In addition there is close liaison with other teams within IT Services and with staff to ensure operational support. The role will also involve working together with external developers on an ad-hoc basic providing functionality for existing and new web solutions. xpected Challenges The University s use of information systems, document management, e-learning and electronic delivery techniques is expanding rapidly. In addition, the website needs to attract international students and must be accessible by all. This presents challenges in: integrating diverse packages and approaches into a coherent set of information systems working efficiently and co-ordinating project deadlines identifying interdependencies, data exchange requirements and pressure points educating customers on risks and recommending countermeasures developing internet services for a variety of administration, business and learning and teaching customers complying with good practice standards and audit requirements in order to ensure reliability, security and efficiency optimising commercial off-the-shelf packages
