1 UNVRSTY OF LNCOLN JOB SCRPTON JOB TTL PARTMNT LOCATON Psychology Technician Psychology Brayford JOB NUMBR HLSS8003 GRA 5 AT November 2013 RPORTS TO Senior Technician CONTXT The post is in the School of Psychology and based in the Psychology Laboratories located in the Main Administrative Building. Teaching and research in the School concerns the investigation of human performance and behaviour. nvestigations make use of a range of equipment and techniques, much of which is computer based. These include G recording, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) within a Faraday Cage, eyetrackers (mobile and fixed); psychophysics, psychophysiological measurement, audio and video recording, specialist computer packages as well as the development and construction of one-off rigs and systems. The Labs also house the Psychology Test Library. JOB PURPOS The role is an exciting opportunity in the School of Psychology. t provides specialist technical support to teaching staff and research teams by preparing and overseeing the practical delivery of teaching classes and research activities. The postholder will also operate, maintain and develop laboratory and research equipment, software and apparatus to ensure the smooth running of a laboratory or research facility, including issuing equipment to students. 2 KY RSPONSBLTS Preparation of experiments, software and equipment. Set up equipment and software, and prepare materials for teaching and/or research. Provide assistance in conducting experiments and in using the equipment. Work closely with academic staff to determine the level of delivery that is required for students. emonstration of procedures emonstrate practical procedures and techniques to undergraduates during practical classes, when requested by the academic in charge. Be responsible for coaching and guiding academic staff and students in the techniques, procedures, complex processes and specialist systems. Be responsible for producing written complex instruction sheets and guides for students to use in the laboratory/workshop/studio. As required introduce individuals to the workplace and tailor the process to the differing needs of the learners. Provision of technical advice Provide technical advice to undergraduate project and research students and researchers in the design of experiments, software or equipment. Advise Managers and Academic staff on developments in laboratory/workshop/studio procedures/methods and new equipment (including costs) that may be available and how this would benefit the area and students. Be a point of reference to colleagues for guidance and advice in all aspects of laboratory processes and equipment. Advise on the operational timetable for academic planning activities as well as in respect of space planning. Liaison & Networking Where directed by Line Manager, attend internal and external working parties or committees. Working with academic and other technical staff to support internal management systems, including equipment loans and databases, Test Library, space booking; Page 2 of 5

3 Build and maintain relationships with colleagues across the University and external parties, eg suppliers, contractors etc Maintenance and repair of equipment/software Responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment and liaison with external companies to oversee repair or replacement. evelopment of methods of testing and practices evelop new or improved methods of testing and demonstrating practices. Health & Safety responsibilities Contribute towards ensuring safety regulations are followed. Conduct risk /COSHH assessment. nstruct students in safe working practices including overseeing activities in the labs. Maintenance of good working practices including hygiene in laboratories Stock control and ordering Monitoring of resources including maintaining an inventory of equipment and software, and the sourcing of suppliers and new equipment. Placing orders when required including monitoring of expenditure within a set budget. n addition to the above, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. The postholder will report directly to the Senior Technician and to the Laboratories irector. Consumables expenditure has typically been in the region of 60k pa.
