Review Prcess Student prgress is mnitred n an nging basis. Review f student perfrmance may ccur n tw levels. One level is the annual review, which includes all students in the prgram. The secnd level, the individual review, ccurs when a student-related prblem is dcumented and filed with a member f the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee by a faculty member, field supervisr, r ther individuals affiliated with the training prgram. a. Annual Review Prcess 10

The Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee will frmally meet each year t review each student s prgress n cre cmpetencies and prgram bjectives. This review will include the quality f the student s academic wrk, the apprpriateness f the student s behavir fr the prfessin f schl psychlgy, and the apprpriateness and prfessinalism f each student s relatinship t her/his clleagues and prfessrs. Input fr annual reviews may be slicited frm the student, faculty, and relevant thers (e.g., practicum supervisrs). In additin, each year the student will submit a prfessinal prtfli (details prvided at fall rientatin meeting) that includes descriptins f hw the student is achieving in each f the prgram s gal areas and supprting cursewrk and ther prfessinal activities. All dcuments generated by this prcess will be placed in the student s file. Nne f this crrespndence will ccur ver the internet. Befre the review f the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee, departmental faculty will be asked t prvide input n each student s perfrmance t the cmmittee. At the SPC meeting, an Annual Review Frm (Frm A) will be cmpleted fr each student. Fr any student requiring a crrective actin plan, a Student Crrective Actin Plan (Frm B) will als be cmpleted. In additin t prblems identified during the frmal annual review prcess, faculty members and ther affiliated with the prgram may initiate review prcedures at any time during the year t address prblems r cncerns. Areas t be reviewed include the nature, severity, and cnsequences f the prblematic behavir. Regardless f hw r when a prblem r cncern is expressed, the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee will wrk tgether t assess the severity f the prblem and determine whether remediatin is an ptin r if a recmmendatin fr dismissal frm the prgram is necessary. b. Individual Review Prcess The Individual Review Prcess begins when a cncern r cmplaint is expressed t any member f the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee, at which pint the student s faculty advisr is infrmed. The cncern r cmplaint may revlve arund academic issues r prfessinal behavir, as listed belw (hwever, the cncerns r cmplaints d nt have t be limited t the fllwing). Inability r unwillingness t acquire and integrate prfessinal standards int clinical practice Inability t acquire prfessinal skills and reach an accepted level f cmpetence expected f masters students Inability t cntrl persnal stress, psychlgical dysfunctin, r emtinal issues t the extent that they interfere with training r wrk with clients The faculty advisr sends a written ntificatin t the student requesting a meeting with the student. Other persns, fr example the faculty persn expressing cncerns, may be invited t attend, at the discretin f the faculty advisr. If the student is nt prmpt r helpful in his/her respnse, he/she may refer the matter t the Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr, wh may chse t invlve the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee. The student and faculty advisr meet. The faculty advisr cmpletes the Individual Student- Advisr Review Frm (Frm C). The faculty advisr makes ne f three pssible decisins: 1. The prblem is reslved and requires n frmal actin (state reasns). 2. A Student Crrective Actin Plan, t which bth parties agree, is develped and dcumented (Frm B). 3. The faculty advisr has nging serius cncerns abut the prblem r the prblem cannt be remediated thrugh a Student Crrective Actin Plan, the matter is frwarded t the Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr. If the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee becmes invlved in the matter, a letter will be sent t the student regarding the decisin f the cmmittee, and it is the respnsibility f the advisr t fllw up and mnitr the situatin regardless f the specific decisin. c. Remediatin Prcedures A Student Crrective Actin Plan (Frm B) is used anytime it is determined thrugh an annual r individual review that a student is failing t make sufficient prgress in the prgram s cursewrk r expected prfessinal behavirs. At a minimum, the student and his/her faculty advisr will cmplete the frm, but input may als be slicited frm the Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr and/r ther members f the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee. The plan will utline what changes are expected f the student and a timeline fr making the changes. The plan will be reviewed peridically at appinted times. A Student 11

Crrective Actin Plan culd include, but is nt limited t, the fllwing ptins: Additinal cursewrk and/r supervised experiences Reductin in the number f classes taken each semester Change f amunt, frmat, and/r cntent f supervisin Recmmend r require individual therapy Recmmend leave f absence frm prgram d. Retentin, Prbatin, and Dismissal After students enrll in the department and Graduate Schl, they may cntinue t register as lng as they make satisfactry prgress. Students are cnsidered in gd standing if they: (a) have a minimum Grade Pint Average (GPA) f 3.0, (b) maintain apprpriate prfessinalism in class and field settings, (c) bserve the rules f ethical cnduct as described in the mst recent APA Ethical Principles f Psychlgists and Cde f Cnduct and the NASP Prfessinal Cnduct Manual, (d) receive successful annual reviews cnducted by the department thrughut their graduate training experience, (e) make satisfactry prgress tward cmpleting degree requirements, and (f) meet the timelines established by the department and Graduate Office. Failure t cmplete departmental requirements within the department s stated timelines may als result in dismissal by the Graduate Schl. Students wh fail t meet departmental timelines may petitin the prgram and the Graduate Schl fr an extensin t meet particular requirements. If granted, extensins typically apply fr ne semester since all majr prgram requirements have timelines that are made knwn t students well in advance. Students are expected t cmplete all prgram requirements when they are due. The Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee engages in a thrugh review prir t recmmending t the Department Chair that a student be dismissed. When there is cncern abut a student s perfrmance that may lead t dismissal, the student s advisr, the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee, and the department chair review the student s recrd, prvide written cmments abut deficits in perfrmance, and prvide the student with a Student Crrective Actin Plan (r a revised plan if ne has already been issued) that utlines steps that need t be taken in rder t reslve the prblem (see the sectin n Annual Review and Individual Review f the student). When cncerns are nt reslved fllwing ample crrective pprtunities, the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee may recmmend dismissal f the student frm the prgram. The recmmendatin t dismiss is frwarded t the Department Chair, wh will make the final decisin. Cnsistent with university plicy, the Department f Psychlgy and Cunseling reserves the right t refuse the privilege f further attendance t a student based n infrmatin gathered frm the abve surces and prcedures. If the student wishes t appeal the Department Chair s decisin, he/she shuld cnsult the Graduate Dean fr apprpriate prcedures. e. Student Appeals The student appeals prcess is listed in the UCA Student Handbk: and the handbk shuld be fllwed fr current guidelines. The Department f Psychlgy and Cunseling is dedicated t prtecting the rights f students, and recgnizes that appeals may be made fr a variety f cncerns: grade appeals, student educatinal recrd appeals, academic plicy/requirements appeals, and prfessinal prgram selectin appeals. f. Grades and Quality Pints Grades f A, B, and C will allw students t receive graduate credit representing 4, 3, and 2 quality pints, respectively. Grades belw C are recrded and are cnsidered in determining the quality-pint rati but are nt accepted tward cmpletin f the graduate prgram. Students receiving a C grade in tw classes will be required t participate in an individualized remedial plan addressing the specific area(s) f academic difficulty. Students receiving three (3) C's in graduate curses will be terminated frm the prgram and will nt be permitted t enrll in any ther graduate prgram in the Department f Psychlgy and Cunseling. All grades, nce reprted, remain a matter f permanent recrd and are averaged int the cumulative GPA. Any appeal r questin cncerning an assigned grade must be made within ne calendar year f the time the grade was awarded. Calculatin f the graduate grade pint average includes all residence curse wrk attempted. N 12

transfer credit grades are used t calculate the cumulative GPA. A graduate student is expected t maintain a cumulative 3.0 average. A student whse cumulative grade pint average is less than this is placed n academic prbatin. In the next semester r summer term in attendance, the student must achieve a cumulative 3.0 average. If the cumulative 3.0 is nt met, the student may be ineligible t cntinue graduate studies at UCA. g. Attendance Attendance and tardiness are primarily a student-teacher-class issue, but the department and university are cncerned abut the student s prper fulfillment f such bligatins. In case f absences that indicate the student has been negligent abut class attendance, registratin in the given class may be canceled, a grade f "WF" recrded and, in flagrant cases, the student may be suspended frm the University. At the graduate level, students shuld realize that cnsistent class attendance and participatin greatly influence their mastery f the cntent. Students are expected t exhibit a high degree f prfessinalism as reflected in their speech, ther actins, and verall demeanr in class. Prmpt and cnsistent attendance is an essential dimensin f prfessinal behavir. h. Inactive Status Students wh are nt enrlled in curse wrk fr a semester withut written apprval f the Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr and the Chair f the Department f Psychlgy and Cunseling will be remved frm the graduate prgram and must reapply fr admissin shuld they decide t return. B. Prgram Outcmes / Requirements 1. Mastery f Cntent Assessed by Prgram Cmprehensive Examinatin All M.S. students must pass a prgram-administered written examinatin prir t receiving the Master s degree AND prir t beginning the internship (regardless f whether they already hld a graduate degree). The Master s cmprehensive examinatins primarily cver fundatinal knwledge in the prgram s eight cre cmpetencies. Fall cmprehensive examinatins are given the 2 nd Tuesday in Nvember. Spring cmprehensive examinatins are given the 1 st Tuesday in April. Details f the examinatin may be btained frm yur advisr r frm the Prgram Directr. Students must register fr the examinatin with the departmental secretary n later than ne mnth prir t the exam date. The cmprehensive exam fr the master s degree cnsists f tw parts. The first part is a 150- item multiple chice written exam. Students must pass the exam at 70% crrect. If a student des nt achieve the 70% crrect cutff, he/she will have t fllw a Student Crrective Actin Plan created by the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee in rder t remediate fr the failure. The secnd part f the cmprehensive exam cnsists f 2-3 written essay questins. These questins are scred in the fllwing manner. Respnses are rated by tw faculty members n a pass-fail basis. If bth faculty members assign a pass, the student passes the essay questins. If bth faculty members assign a fail, the student fails the essay questins. If ne faculty member assigns a fail, then a third faculty member (wh des nt knw he/she is the third rater) is asked t rate the respnses. If the third faculty member assigns a pass, the essay questins are passed. If the third faculty member assigns a fail, the essay questins are failed. Mst students take their Master s cmprehensive exams in Nvember during the fall semester f their secnd year. Successful remediatin f any area must ccur n later than the semester prir t internship. The Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee has the ptin f requiring an ral examinatin in additin t a written retake. This infrmatin is explained in greater detail belw by way f the fllwing tw cmprehensive exam case scenaris: Case 1. Pass multiple chice and essay prtin f cmprehensive exam --- Pass cmprehensive exam, Student is eligible fr internship. Case 2. Fail multiple chice and/r essay prtin f cmprehensive exam --- Fail cmprehensive exam, Student is nt eligible fr internship. Student must cmplete Student Crrective Actin Plan then retake failed prtin f exam. If retake is passed, Student is eligible fr internship. 13

If retake is failed, Student will be dismissed frm prgram. 2. Mastery f Cntent Assessed by ETS s Praxis II Examinatin All M.S. students must pass the Praxis II exam in Schl Psychlgy at the level specified by the Arkansas Department f Educatin (ADE). It is recmmended that this exam be taken the summer after cursewrk is cmpleted r early in the fall semester f internship. The exam must be taken regardless f the student s internship lcatin and intentin t cmplete requirements fr the Schl Psychlgy Specialist credential thrugh the ADE. This exam was created and is administered by the Educatinal Testing Service. This exam must be cmpleted and fficial scres must be received at UCA prir t the student being given a grade fr their secnd semester f internship. Infrmatin abut the exam can be fund at: 3. Demnstratin f Apprpriate Prfessinal Knwledge, Skills, and Dispsitins during Practicum Experience The tw-semester practicum experience must be cmpleted in pre-apprved practicum sites prir t internship. The practicum is intended t prvide a part-time pre-prfessinal experience fr the schl psychlgy student wh has cmpleted preparatry academic cursewrk in the UCA graduate prgram. Under the supervisin f a qualified Schl Psychlgy Specialist r an apprpriately credentialed Psychlgist, the student will be assigned t a practicum site and perfrm many f the duties f a Schl Psychlgy Specialist. The setting will be a schl r agency that prvides psychlgical services t children and adlescents. A prperly certified Schl Psychlgy Specialist r a Licensed Psychlgist at the schl r agency assumes primary n-site respnsibility fr supervisin f the student. Universitybased supervisin als is prvided n an nging basis thrughut the practicum experience. Mre specific infrmatin regarding practicum can be fund in the practica curse syllabi (Psychlgy 6332 and 6333). In these classes, students will be prvided with a list f the minimum prfessinal activities required during their practicum experiences. 4. Demnstratin f Apprpriate Prfessinal Knwledge, Skills, and Dispsitins during Internship Experience The fllwing infrmatin serves as a guide fr the internship in Schl Psychlgy fr use by Interns, UCA faculty, and On-site Supervisrs. Fur pints are discussed belw: 1. Purpse f the internship 2. Pre-internship curse requirements. 3. Requirements f internship 4. Respnsibilities f the Intern, UCA Prgram Chair, UCA Trainers, and On-site Supervisr a. Purpse and Philsphy The internship is a culminating training experience intended t prvide a ne-year, full-time, supervised experience fr the schl psychlgy student wh has cmpleted his r her Master f Science degree plus 9 additinal hurs f graduate cursewrk at UCA. Under the supervisin f a Schl Psychlgy Specialist r Licensed Psychlgist, the Intern shuld perfrm all r mst f the duties f a prfessinal Schl Psychlgy Specialist. We recgnize that the student is nt, at this pint, an independently cmpetent prfessinal. Hwever, the student will have the theretical/academic backgrund and practical skills necessary t begin making a cntributin t the wrk f the internship agency almst immediately. The internship is designed t be a mutually beneficial arrangement fr bth the Intern and internship agency clientele, thus the Intern prvides valuable prfessinal services t children and ther clientele and the agency prvides supervisin t guide the student in enhancing his r her prfessinal skills. b. Pre-internship Curse Requirements Befre beginning an internship, the student will cmplete all the prgram's curse requirements (54 hurs) and will have passed the written cmprehensive examinatin. Curse requirements are designed t prepare the Intern t functin effectively at the internship site. The internship experience is given three hurs f graduate credit per semester, fr a ttal f six hurs fr the schl year. c. Internship Requirements 14

Setting The internship will be served in a schl r agency that prvides psychlgical services t children and adlescents in regular and special educatin settings. Acceptable internship sites wuld include public and private schls, educatinal cperatives, Arkansas Children's Hspital, cmmunity mental health centers, residential treatment centers, and diagnstic clinics. At least 600 hurs must be cmpleted in a schl setting. Students can begin explring internship sites at any time during their secnd full-time year in the prgram but n later than early in the semester just prir t their anticipated internship. Pssible internship sites shuld be discussed with their Academic Advisr, the Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr, r ther schl psychlgy faculty members prir t finalizing any arrangements with the internship agency. Once the student has identified an available site, he/she is t: (1) Send written ntice t the UCA Schl Psychlgy Prgram Directr fr apprval f the internship site; and (2) Cmplete the applicatin/cntract material fr the site. Ideally, these tw tasks are t be cmpleted by mid-term f the semester befre internship. Apprval by the UCA Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee is necessary befre an internship can begin. It is the student s respnsibility t initiate and btain such apprval befre beginning the internship. Time The internship cnsists f a minimum f 1,200 clck hurs, at least 600 f which must be cmpleted in a schl setting. A schl setting is defined by NASP as a setting in which the primary gal is the educatin f students f diverse backgrunds, characteristics, abilities, disabilities, and needs. Generally, a schl setting includes students wh are enrlled in Grades prek-12 and has bth general educatin and special educatin services. The schl setting has available an internal r external pupil services unit that includes at least ne state-credentialed schl psychlgist and prvided a full range f schl psychlgy services. (Frm NASP s Standards fr Graduate Preparatin f Schl Psychlgists 2010) These hurs crrespnd rughly t tw academic semesters f 15 weeks each at 40 hurs per week. Frms will be prvided t students fr dcumentatin f internship hurs and activities. Supervisin A Schl Psychlgy Specialist r Licensed Psychlgist at the schl r agency must assume the primary respnsibility fr supervisin f the intern. The On-site Supervisr and Intern must meet fr a minimum f tw hurs, face t face, per week and be accessible t the intern as supervisin issues arise. Interns may nt wrk with supervisrs wh have mre than tw interns. Supervisin activities are t be frmally dcumented n frms prvided by the Schl Psychlgy Prgram. The UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr prvides peridic supervisin fr the Intern during the internship year. The Crdinatr will assist the intern and the schl/agency in making the initial placement f the intern, determining apprpriate experiences and training fr the intern, identifying and attempting t remedy prblems as they ccur, and assessing the quality f the intern's wrk. Such supervisin and cnsultatin can ccur thrugh letters, telephne calls, and site visits. Please nte that if a student is apprved by the SPC t accept a psitin with a schl district that is utside the state f Arkansas, the student is financially respnsible fr tw site visits by the UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr. This respnsibility includes all travel, ldging, and fd csts. The Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr can supervise n mre than twelve interns at any given time. Activities and Experiences The prfessinal Schl Psychlgy Specialist perfrms a wide variety f services. The internship will prvide the intern with the pprtunity t engage in mst f the activities necessary t prepare him/her t perfrm these services. Hwever, it is understd that a prfessinal, in a given setting, may nt prvide all f the services within his/her repertire t an equal degree. Each schl r agency has specific needs, and an effective prfessinal is respnsive t thse needs. Similarly, n schl r agency is expected t prvide all f the pssible training experiences fr interns. The fllwing desirable internship experiences are intended t be used as guidelines fr the planning f an internship. The On-site Supervisr, UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr, and the Intern will jintly determine the experiences f an internship. In planning an internship, these individuals will take int accunt the purpses and needs f the schl r agency and the interests and cmpetencies f the 15

Intern. Hwever, the internship shuld include as many f the fllwing as pssible: 1. Frmal and infrmal assessment activities 2. Individual and grup therapeutic interventin 3. Cnsultatin and cllabratin with a variety f prfessinals, parents, and cmmunity members 4. Develpment and implementatin f psych-educatinal interventins fr academic, cgnitive, and scial-emtinal prblems 5. Participatin in prfessinal develpment activities as a prvider and/r recipient f such services / activities Respnsibilities The Intern, On-site Supervisr, and UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr share respnsibility fr the effectiveness f the internship. If a prblem is identified by any ne f these individuals, it is that persn s respnsibility t bring that prblem t the attentin f the ther parties as sn as pssible. Examples f prblems that might interfere with the effectiveness f the internships include: inapprpriate experiences fr the Intern, misunderstanding the requirements f the internship, persnality cnflicts, inapprpriate r unprfessinal behavir by the Intern, etc. There may be instances in which the UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr speaks with the On-site Supervisr regarding the Intern s prfessinal skills r behavirs that may influence r are influencing the Intern s perfrmance n internship. Since the gal f such discussin wuld be t prvide the Intern with apprpriate experiences and supervisin, these discussins may nt include the Intern directly. Any prblem identified by the Intern r On-site Supervisr shuld be brught t attentin f the UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr immediately. The UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr will wrk with the Intern and the On-site Supervisr t reslve the prblem. If n slutin can be reached, the internship will be terminated befre the end f the semester. Ethical standards f the American Psychlgical Assciatin and the Natinal Assciatin f Schl Psychlgists will be fllwed in all internship activities. The Intern is respnsible fr discharging his/her assigned duties in a prfessinal manner and fr respnding t supervisin apprpriately. The Intern shuld fllw all rules and regulatins f the schl r agency just as any ther emplyee wuld. This includes matters such as wrking hurs, time ff, vacatins, manner f dress, etc. The On-site Supervisr helps determine the mst apprpriate experiences fr the Intern, assigns duties t the Intern, and prvides n-ging supervisin f the Intern s wrk. The On-site supervisr needs t ntify the UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr if a prblem develps during the internship that des nt seem amenable t slutin within the schl r agency. At the end each semester f the internship, the On-site Supervisr will be asked t submit a written evaluatin f the Intern s wrk, and t help the UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr determine a grade fr the Intern. The UCA Internship Crdinatr/Supervisr determines the apprpriateness f internship sites, helps place the intern, helps determine the experiences included in the internship, and wrks with the Intern and the On-site Supervisr as necessary t wrk ut the details f the internship. The Crdinatr/Supervisr cntacts the On-site Supervisr peridically during the internship year t mnitr the prgress f the internship. These cntacts typically include at least ne n-site visit and may als be made by telephne r letter. 5. Demnstrated Ability t Psitively Influence Academics / Behavir f P-12 Children During the practicum experience, each student will create, implement, and evaluate at least tw interventins with schl age children (preschl 12 th grade). One interventin will fcus n academic skills, and the ther will fcus n behavir. One f these interventin cases will be frmally dcumented and presented in the P6333: Schl Psychlgy Practicum II class. The ne specific expectatin fr this assignment is that the student is able t effectively dcument change in the P-12 child as a result f the interventin used. Other criteria used t evaluate this interventin will be shared with students during the P6333 class. 6. Demnstrated Prficiency in Prgram Gals thrugh Prtfli during Internship 16

As mentined previusly in the Annual Review Prcess sectin, each student must cmplete a prfessinal prtfli each year t dcument his/her prgress tward the prgram cmpetencies. Infrmatin abut prtflis is presented t all students at the Spring Prgram Meeting in January. In the spring f the internship year, each student must prepare their final prtfli fr review by the Schl Psychlgy Cmmittee. The student must prvide sufficient evidence f prfessinal grwth in each area in rder t btain satisfactry ratings fr this requirement. 7. Thesis (Optinal) Students may chse t cmplete a M.S. thesis, and shuld speak t their advisr regarding this ptin. Steps t cmpleting the thesis are prvided belw. 1. The department chairpersn will apprve a majr prfessr fr the candidate. This prfessr will becme chairpersn f the student's thesis cmmittee. 2. The Dean f the Graduate Schl will name: (1) anther prfessr in the department, and (2) anther member utside the department. 3. The student will submit a written statement f the scpe f the prpsed study and utline f prcedure t be fllwed t the majr prfessr. Once this is apprved, a cpy will be filed in the graduate ffice, a cpy retained by the majr prfessr and a cpy retained by the student. 4. When the candidate has fulfilled all curse requirements fr the degree and has cmpleted the thesis, all cmmittee members will read and apprve the thesis. Befre the thesis is recmmended t the Dean f the Graduate Schl fr graduatin, the cmmittee will meet with the candidate fr an ral defense f the thesis. Bth the Dean f the Graduate Schl and the chairpersn f the department will be invited t attend the examinatin. Tw r mre dissenting vtes frm thse present will result in failure t accept the thesis. 5. The candidate will submit tw cpies f the thesis t the graduate ffice after it has been apprved by all members f the cmmittee. It must be in the ffice f the Dean f the Graduate Schl at least tw weeks prir t graduatin. Current infrmatin relative t the thesis may be fund in the Graduate Supplement Bulletin. 17

IV. POST-GRADUATE CERTIFICATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT A. Pst-Graduate Certificatin Upn cmpletin f the specialist-level Schl Psychlgy prgram, graduates will be qualified t apply fr (1) licensure as a Schl Psychlgy Specialist by the Arkansas Bard f Educatin and (2) certificatin as a Natinally Certified Schl Psychlgist (NCSP) by the Natinal Assciatin f Schl Psychlgists. The abve-mentined certificatins require successful perfrmance n the schl psychlgy specialty area exam f the ETS Praxis II. B. Pst-Graduate Emplyment The specialist-level Schl Psychlgy prgram primarily prepares students t wrk in schls.
