Research students are prvisinal in candidature fr at least the first twelve mnths (r half-time equivalent), after which a cmprehensive Majr Review f Prgress is undertaken by the Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Cmmittee, t determine the capacity f the student t cmplete their research and submit a quality thesis fr examinatin within three t three and a half years. The Majr Review prcess is designed t assess the ability f the student t cmplete their prgram in a timely fashin, as well t ascertain hw best the Schl/University can supprt them in this gal. The Review Cmmittee can recmmend cnfirmatin f candidature, extensin f prvisinal candidature, terminatin f candidature r transfer frm a Dctrate t a Masters. Preparing fr the Majr Review f Prgress 1. The student must cmplete the persnal details sectin (tp f page 3 belw) and a ne-page written prgress reprt (using Sectin A belw) The student must leave the remainder f the frm blank and submit the frm t his/her principal supervisr three weeks befre his/her majr review. 2. The supervisr will prepare a shrt reprt (using Sectin B belw) clearly highlighting the strengths and weaknesses f the candidate and the candidate s prgress and will leave the remainder f the frm blank. The supervisr will circulate the frm t all cmmittee members prir t the majr review meeting date. An exemplar is available in the Majr Review - Lessns Learnt and Best Practice: 3. The remainder f the frm is cmpleted and signed by all relevant parties. The cmpleted frm is then submitted t the Graduate Centre. Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Cmmittee The Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Cmmittee will cmprise at a minimum: 1. All supervisrs f the candidate (input frm external supervisrs is als required); and 2. One r mre senir members f the Schl s academic staff (preferably including the Pstgraduate Crdinatr). In additin, it is recmmended that at least ne Discipline expert is a member f the Cmmittee. The Chair f the Cmmittee will nrmally be the Pstgraduate Crdinatr. Nte hwever, that the Chair f the Cmmittee MUST NOT be a supervisr and therefre, if the Pstgraduate Crdinatr is als a supervisr, anther senir member f the Schl s academic staff shuld be appinted as the Chair. Where the Head f Schl/Discipline is appinted t the Chair, anther senir member f academic staff f the Schl, wh is nt a supervisr shuld sign in the capacity f the Head f Schl/Discipline. This is t ensure the impartiality f the prgress assessment. Guidelines fr the Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Cmmittee The Cmmittee s rle is t: Assess the candidate s prgress against bth the quality and quantity f wrk required fr cmpletin within the Page 1 f 10

2 required timeframe fr the degree and prvide them with cnstructive feedback; Identify and dcument any prblems r issues likely t affect the ability f the candidate t cmplete within the required timeframe f the degree and indicate where these are beynd the student s cntrl; Discuss the student s relatinships with their supervisr(s) t determine whether their prfessinal cmpatibility is sufficient t facilitate cmpletin f the degree within the required timeframe; Prvide ne f the fllwing recmmendatins t the Research Educatin and Develpment Cmmittee (REDC): 1. Cnfirm Candidature n the grunds that: a) Cmpletin is expected within the minimum time-frame fr the degree (ne year-eighteen mnths); r b) Cmpletin is expected within the maximum time-frame fr the degree (eighteen mnths tw years). 2. Extend Prvisinal Status Where a cmmittee is unsure f a candidate s ptential fr success but wishes t give them the benefit f the dubt, the best prcedure is t extend prvisinal candidature fr a perid f 3/4/5 mnths, befre final review. 3. Terminatin f Candidature Minimum Requirements fr the Cnfirmatin f Candidature Cnfirmatin f candidature requires at a minimum: Satisfactry cmpletin f all the preceding milestnes, including: The Adelaide Graduate Centre Inductin Prgram; The Cre Cmpnent f the Structured Prgram; The Integrated Bridging Prgram (IBP) where applicable Regular attendance f the Schl Seminar Prgram; A minimum f acceptable prgress during prvisinal candidature fr all student capability measures, as determined by the Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Panel; The generatin f a Gantt chart r equivalent Cmpletin Plan fr the remainder f candidature. The Gantt chart/cmpletin Plan may be prepared in the frmat f ne f the examples listed n the Adelaide Graduate Centre s web site at: A cmpleted risk assessment detailing cntingency plans shall be cmpiled and maintained by the Schl/Discipline and shuld detail hw t prceed in the event that ne r mre f the fllwing ccur: The research directin(s) pursued prve(s) unsuccessful, r nt wrth pursuing; Supervisr(s) will be absent e.g. n study leave; Existing skills/experience are inadequate t undertake the planned research (i.e. training is required); Existing resurces are inadequate t undertake the planned research; Candidate has taken excessive leave. A recmmendatin t extend prvisinal status indicates the student has made prgress but is nt yet ready fr cnfirmatin. The Candidature Cnfirmatin Review Cmmittee will make a final recmmendatin fllwing a further review at the end f the extended prvisinal candidature perid. We recmmend an extensin f prvisinal candidature fr: Three mnths Fur mnths Five mnths Six mnths During the perid f extended prvisinal candidature, the candidate will be required t satisfactrily cmplete the milestnes detailed in Sectin F abve. 3. Terminatin f Candidature With reference t the Student Capability Measures Table, this recmmendatin must be used where three r mre student capability measures have been rated as 'Unsatisfactry'.
