1 COE: Hybrid Curse Request fr Prpsals The gals f the Cllege f Educatin Hybrid Curse Funding Prgram are: T supprt the develpment f effective, high-quality instructin that meets the needs and expectatins f 21st century learners T supprt the design and implementatin f technlgy-based materials that enhance the quality and effectiveness f cursewrk in the Cllege f Educatin T prvide instructrs with the financial supprt necessary t transfrm apprpriate curses int a hybrid mdel Definitin f a Hybrid Curse 1 The Cllege f Educatin defines a hybrid curse as ne in which: At least 30% but less than 70% f the regularly scheduled in-class time is transferred t an nline cntext. Nte: The ideal balance may vary widely as apprpriate t individual curses. This number is prvided as guideline nly and is cnsistent with hybrid definitin develping n campus. 1 Hybrid curses differ frm web-enhanced curses and frm nline curses. A web-enhanced curse relies n traditinal, face-t-face meetings, but it uses varius technlgies fr distributing infrmatin r supplementing class meetings. Technlgies are used fr cmmunicative/interactive purpses that wuld nrmally ccur utside f class meeting times. Fr example: submissin f hmewrk, prvisin f electrnic textbks, PDFs, r nline readings. Many web-enhanced curses use nline tls such as learning management systems (Canvas), , and the web. Hwever, the use f technlgy in a web-enhanced curse des nt change the nature f learning activities, student interactins, r in-class activities. In an nline curse, all regularly scheduled classrm time is replaced by required activities cmpleted at a distance and managed nline. Online curses allw students t take curses frm gegraphically remte lcatins, withut any need t cme t a university campus classrm r ther predetermined lcatin, but the student is respnsible fr arranging a lcatin suitable t the curse requirements. In an nline curse, visits t particular sites, fr instance fr tests, internships, service learning, interviews, field research, r ther curricular activity may be required, but the lcatin and scheduling f these activities is flexible. Unlike a hybrid curse, n face-t-face meetings are necessary.

2 The nline cmpnent f the curse serves t change r enhance the learning activities that ccur during face-t-face meetings. Fr example, mving backgrund lectures nline can allw mre face-t-face time spent n discussin r hands-n applicatin. Hwever, hybrid curses can take many frms and instructrs are encuraged t be creative in develping a curse design that is apprpriate fr their curse cntent and bjectives. Nte: the success f face-t-face wrk in a hybrid curse is relatively dependent n a high percentage f students having dne the nline cmpnent effectively. Therefre, instructrs must be able t track cmpletin f nline wrk and it must accunt fr a prtin f the student grade/credit. Nte: the success f nline activities als may depend n student attendance f face-tface activities. Instructrs are encuraged t design curses in which the nline and face-t-face activities are integrated and cmplementary. Online curse cmpnents take advantage f technlgical capabilities (and/r innvative technlgies) t facilitate student attentin and interactin. Avid vides r lectures that are passive with n pprtunities fr knwledge testing r questins. Whenever pssible, embed questins r assessments int lectures r presentatins t facilitate student thinking. When pssible, break nline materials (especially vides and audi files) int smaller chunks (typically n mre than 10 minutes each). Use cues (e.g., highlighting) t guide student attentin during nline vides r slides. The cmbinatin f nline and face-t-face activities preserve (r enhance) the develpment f a learning cmmunity in which students actively cnstruct knwledge and engage in academic discurse. Award Infrmatin: Yu may apply fr a maximum award f $2500. The typical purpse f the funding is summer salary t supprt curse develpment. Specialized hardware/sftware purchases will be cnsidered, but the prgram will nt fund the purchase f typical hardware/sftware prvided by departments (e.g., faculty laptp). Each curse will be eligible fr ne-time funding nly. Onging csts (e.g., renewal f sftware licenses r upgrades) will nt be funded thrugh this prgram. Funding may nt be used fr travel. Preference will be given t curses that are frequently taught, have large prgrammatic impact (percentage f students wh wuld benefit frm the curse) and have lng-term cmmitments frm the department that will ffer the prpsed hybrid curse. Yu shuld attach a brief letter f cmmitment/supprt frm yur department chair that articulates department supprt fr the curse,

3 the anticipated frequency that the curse will be ffered and the number r percentage f students in a prgram that will be impacted. Prpsals must be n mre than 4 pages in length (plus a budget and curse syllabus attached as appendices, which d nt cunt against the 4 page limit). This prgram will fund prjects that transfrm existing curses in the Cllege f Educatin t a hybrid mdel r that seek t develp new hybrid curses (Nte: If this is a new curse (i.e., never been taught befre), it must already have been apprved by the COE Curriculum Cmmittee in rder t be cnsidered fr this funding). Every prpsal shuld clearly address the fllwing majr sectins. Additinal details fr each sectin are described belw. Hybrid Prpsal: Required Sectins (100 pints) Basic Infrmatin (10 pints) Curse Subject, Number, & Title Credit Hurs Hw frequently is the curse taught (if new ffering, what is anticipated frequency)? Hw many sectins are ffered per semester? Are all sectins hybrid r will sme be face-t-face? Is this a required curse fr an endrsement r degree prgram? What number/percentage f students will be impacted by the hybrid curse? Justificatin fr Hybrid Curse Design (15 pints) Hybrid teaching is nt just a matter f cnverting a prtin f yur current curse t the Web. Rather, it invlves develping challenging and engaging learning activities that ccur within and utside the classrm. Please prvide a succinct justificatin fr yur hybrid curse design. Curse descriptin and explanatin (15 pints) What aspects f the curse will ccur nline? What aspects f the curse will ccur face t face?

4 Prvide a clear explanatin f the curse rganizatin. Hw many classes will be nline vs. face-t-face? Hw will nline and face-t-face classes be interweaved thrughut the semester? Hw will nline activities change r enhance the activities in face t face meetings? Cnnectin between Curse Design and Student Learning (15 pints) Hw d the prpsed nline and face-t-face activities cmbine t imprve student learning r understanding? If transfrming an existing curse, explain hw the hybrid curse will differ frm the current (face-t-face nly) versin f the curse. What are the curse bjectives and hw des the class design align t these curse bjectives? What are the assessment strategies that will be used t evaluate student learning? (Examples may include: discussins, essays/papers, peer review, jurnaling, prtflis, prjects, quizzes, exams.) Please tie the anticipated assessments t yur curse bjectives and identify hw they will be administered (face-t-face/nline). Detailed descriptin f nline platfrm, materials, and/r digital cmpnents (10 pints) What nline platfrm (e.g., Canvas, Mdle, curse website, etc.) will be used t implement the nline cmpnents f the curse? What nline materials will need t be develped fr this curse? If yur prpsal is funded, yur end-f-semester curse evaluatin will include a small set f additinal questins that the Cllege f Educatin has established fr the evaluatin f hybrid curses. Appendix A: Line-Item Budget (5 pints) Prvide a 1-page line-item budget that shws the breakdwn f requested funding. Appendix B: Sample Syllabus (10 pints) As an appendix, prvide a sample syllabus fr the prpsed hybrid curse. Please highlight key cmpnents f the syllabus that highlight the mdificatins that make this curse a hybrid mdel and refer t them specifically where apprpriate in the main text f yur prpsal.
