4 Are you up to date with the latest property industry employment trends? A word from Edge Recruitment Take Edge Recruitment s Quarterly Hiring Intentions Survey for the April June quarter and gain access to the latest data for South Australia. Edge Director Jane Carey says This is a fantastic initiative that is of value to both employers and employees alike. The survey is a useful market indicator for the whole industry going forward. The survey aims to capture data that provides a snapshot of employment prospects over the next 3 months, forecasting what s in store for the property industry locally. Consisting of only four questions it takes less than five minutes to complete. Of course all responses remain totally anonymous. If you are a decision maker on employment matters within your company, click here to complete the survey. Edge would appreciate your participation and look forward to publishing the results to the industry. The survey closes on Monday 24th March For further information about the survey, please do not hesitate to call Edge Recruitment on or info@edgepropertypeople.com.au. API (SA) E-News March
5 UNISA Property Program News from the University of South Australia As some will already know, there have been many changes in the last 12 months or so at the UNISA. Recent retirements include Valerie Kupke, Peter Cucchiarelli and Tony Lockwood, with Geoff Page choosing to be seconded to another area within the University. Combined property teaching experience lost is in the order of 85 years! With Pagey leaving no longer do we see the figure in denim shorts, walking barefooted in the corridors!!! As many of you also know, Wayne Marano has not been able to work for the last year and has now retired from the University. He continues to improve and we all wish him the best. On the other hand, Brian O Callaghan, Peter Koulizos and Karen Parry provide superb back up with sessional teaching and in the meantime Philip Beaton has been appointed full time for one year. Sharon Yam is Program Director and we are assisted in all things by Peter Rossini. Peter has now been teaching at UNISA for some 30 years and still going strong! Professor David Parker is on sabbatical leave until June We are pleased to say that the Property Program is now accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV), accrediting our graduates to practise in many areas of the world. On a more general note, the property team is proud to inform that currently we have over 500 students enrolled in the Property Program (over the three years of study). This figure includes Under Graduates, Post Graduates, internal and external students. Of that figure 190 are external! In recent years we have also strengthened our emphasis on pastoral care, with a number of events to assist students in their endeavours. For example this month we have Welcome to the World of Property, where we invite our first year students to come to a lunch time event and hear representatives from the API, RICS, PCA and REI. Additionally we had Tracey Gornall speak this year, in her capacity as a member of an international firm offering a range of job opportunities. Furthermore we had representation from Hays Human Resources firm giving an indication of the skills that employers are seeking and the opportunities offered. On May 19 we have the launch of our 2014 Mentor Scheme and we are very grateful for those members of the property industry in giving their time and energy in assisting our young students. Any member of the API who has not assisted before but would like to this year, they are encouraged to contact Philip Beaton (philipbeaton@unisa.edu.au). In regard to our teaching needs, currently we are seeking one or two people who would be willing to commit to sessional teaching in our Study Period 5 ( semester two in the old language). This is for repeat tutorials that are student centred. We would require one person to commit to two days a week for about 13 weeks from August to November 2014, or alternatively two people committing to one day a week each. For further details all interested parties should initially contact me. Philip Beaton API (SA) E-News March
6 Welcome to the world of Property Event at the University of South Australia On Wednesday 12 March the API (SA) presented at an event held at the University of South Australia, welcome to the world of Property. Uni SA Alumni, Tracy Gornall; Property Council of Australia, Richard Angove; and REISA, Greg Troughton Moira Mundy gave a short presentation to students studying property related degrees, regarding the API, student Membership and the Young Property Professionals. The event was also attended by representatives from: RICS, James Sangster; Hays, Andrew Robertson; who gave presentations regarding their organisations and providing helpful advice for students. The event was enjoyable to attend and provided students with a light lunch, insight and advice regarding working in the property industry.
