4 RG146 for the superannuation industry Overview To provide advice in superannuation, or in a financial planning context, you must meet the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's (ASIC) Tier 1 compliance requirements. AIST's RG146 for the superannuation industry course formally addresses the National Competency Standards that are approved by ASIC as meeting Tier 1 compliance, as defined in their Regulatory Guide 146. You can find the Regulatory Guide 146 at the following website: AIST s RG146 for the superannuation industry course is of particular relevance to new staff, people changing roles, or anyone representing a fund to members and/or employers. It is also widely considered as a necessary pre-requisite qualification for most roles in the superannuation industry. What is the difference between AIST s current RG146 course and the pre July 2009 course? In July 2009, AIST added further content to the RG146 course, which qualifies students for a further ten nationally recognised units of competency. Successful completion of the RG146 upgrade course can provide you with these competencies and a pathway to further your career with additional qualifications in superannuation or financial planning. Once you have completed either AIST s current RG146 course, or the pre July 2009 course plus the RG146 upgrade course, you only need to complete two further subjects to qualify for the Diploma of Financial Services (Superannuation), or the Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning). The RG146 upgrade course will also benefit those looking to expand their knowledge of investments and all aspects of the financial planning process. 2.

5 Insurance for the superannuation industry Overview Insurance for the superannuation industry is beneficial for people working in both the superannuation and insurance industries. The course will assist students to better understand the structures, regulations and benefit designs of insurance products within superannuation. Insurance for the superannuation industry is a diploma-level course that meets nationally recognised units of competency. It may be completed as a standalone subject or combined with AIST s RG146 for the superannuation industry. Module topics include: Introduction to insurance Legislation and regulatory bodies Insurance with superannuation Other insurance considerations for trustees Insurance benefit design Underwriting and risk assessment Death and disability claims Dispute resolution Investment for the superannuation industry Overview Investment for the superannuation industry is designed for a wide range of participants working in superannuation. This course will provide students with a broad understanding of how superannuation is invested. The course is suitable for people at all levels of the industry, covering both basic and advanced investment concepts. Investment for the superannuation industry is a diploma-level course that meets nationally recognised units of competency. It may be completed as a standalone subject or combined with AIST s RG146 for the superannuation industry and Insurance for the superannuation industry courses. Module topics include: Introduction to investments Investments and the economic environment Investment risk Asset classes, hedging and derivatives Trustee considerations Managed investment products Service providers Investment management styles Asset valuations 3.

6 Course delivery methods RG146 for the superannuation industry Facilitated training Face-to-face facilitation and delivered over four full days, this mode encourages participation and invites interaction between students and trainers. An exam must also be completed at a later date. Self-paced learning Self-paced learning enables you to control the pace of your learning, providing you with the opportunity to take advantage of your learning style and time. This method must be completed within 6 months of commencement. Insurance/Investment for the superannuation industry Facilitated training Face-to-face facilitation and delivered over three full days, this mode encourages participation and invites interaction between students and trainers. An exam must also be completed at a later date. Self-paced learning Self-paced learning enables you to control the pace of your learning, providing you with the opportunity to take maximum advantage of your learning style and time. This method must be completed within 6 months of commencement. Assessment In order to be found competent in each of these courses you will be required to successfully complete two (2) assessments, they are as follows: Exam: A two-hour, open book exam that is completed within a set time frame (not applicable for RG146 upgrade course). 8 AIST s Learning & Professional Development trainers Rachel Gallagher AIST Learning & Professional Development Manager Rachel Gallagher is the Learning & Professional Development Manager at AIST. Rachel holds qualifications in training and assessment, as well as superannuation, financial services and management. Rachel has 14 years experience designing, developing and delivering education at all levels, both in Australia and overseas, to the retail and not-for-profit superannuation industry. Rachel was well paced, knowledgeable, patient and understanding. She had a good sense of humour and sensed the needs of all students (slow or paced). Nick Duffy AIST Senior Training Consultant Nick is a qualified workplace trainer and assessor who has been involved in training since 2000, and has worked in the superannuation industry since Prior to joining AIST, Nick was a consultant for KPMG and spent seven years developing and conducting professional development programs for Australian Administration Services. Nick is passionate about the subject (RG146), is easy to understand and very clear in his presentation and explanations. Peter Tagg AIST Training Consultant Peter is a qualified workplace trainer and assessor who has been involved in training since 2005, and has worked in the superannuation industry for 12 years. Prior to joining AIST, Peter was the senior training officer at Pillar Administration, developing and facilitating training programs for superannuation administration staff. Peter progressed logically through the content, answered questions well and adopted a flexible approach throughout. Richard Webb AIST Training Consultant Richard is a qualified workplace trainer and assessor who has been involved in training since 2004, and has worked in financial services since Richard joined AIST from Superpartners where he was the learning & development consultant technical. He also worked for AXA for two years as a training consultant, and the Commonwealth Bank for six years, where he was a financial planner. Richard engaged students, clearly communicated concepts and was happy to further explain topics that were difficult to understand. 6.
