2 WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR WELCOME to the Gold Coast for the Australian Property Institute s Queensland Property Conference With construction and property services being two of the traditional drivers of our economy, the Gold Coast is the perfect setting for this meeting of minds. And I ve no doubt the content of your discussions will be particularly relevant here as we move towards our goal of getting the Gold Coast moving and working again. The economic benefits of the property industry are far-reaching, extending to many of the City s other industries we re so famous for, like retail and hospitality, which also support a significant suite of educational and training programs. When the work s done, there s so much to choose from beaches, waterways, award-winning restaurants and bistros, adventure sports and world-class retail outlets, to name only a few. You ll run out of time before you run out of things to do here! Most of all, enjoy the Property Conference 2012 and the Gold Coast while you re here, and I hope I ll see you here again before too long. TOM TATE MAYOR WELCOME FROM THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE The Queensland Property Conference Organising Committee take great pleasure in welcoming you to this year s Queensland Property Conference. Last year, there were over 650 attendees registered and the committee is hopeful this year s conference will be just as successful. Conference committee members have dedicated many hours of their time shaping this year s program and their commitment has been exceptional. The Conference Organising Committee includes: Deniz Clarke pmapi - Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Brett McAuliffe fapi - McAuliffe Property Services Shannon Murphy aapi - CB Richard Ellis Brett Robinson aapi - CapLand Real Estate Advisors Mohammad Sharif aapi - Queensland Rail The conference program offers energetic and dynamic speakers presenting on various pertinent issues including the economic outlook, native title compensation, transit orientated development, housing affordability and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. You will be inspired by our motivational speaker Sam Cawthorn as he speaks about his personal triumphs and takes attendees on a journey of discovery through their own lives. He speaks about a principle of not just bouncing back from crises, but bouncing forward through innovation, creativity and thought leadership. At this year s conference there is a particular focus on promoting socialising and networking opportunities with your fellow colleagues, as you expand your knowledge on the range of issues presented by experts who are at the top of their respective fields. The inclusion of the popular Conference Dinner and the return of the Conference Breakfast are great opportunities to do this. Once again, the conference will be held at Jupiters Gold Coast. It s a terrific, central location and the Committee urges you to be part of this year s event, whilst also taking the opportunity to unwind on the magnificent Gold Coast. Economic Outlook In 2012 Michael Knox, Director of Strategy and Chief Economist with RBS Morgan s, returns to provide the Economic Outlook address at the Queensland Property Conference. Michael will provide an overview of the current market, what the economic indicators predict for , current interest rates and the Australian dollar. Representatives from the four major lending institutions, two largest lender mortgage insurance providers, all major valuation firms and the API have all been involved in this process, with a consultation period of twelve months. The Standing Instructions were developed to provide clarity for the Valuation community and are subject to the API PropertyPRO Supporting Memorandum. These instructions are a major step forward in providing further guidance, clarity and consistency in the requirements of the lending institutions. In this presentation Robert Hecek, National Vice-President of the API, will provide an overview of the document including general effects as well as critical effects on a property, construction, as if complete valuations requirements, as if complete valuations for owner builders, progress inspections and other property types including restricted valuations. What is the impact on tenants and landlords? In this presentation, Michael Nixon & Stephen Dickens, both Partners with Mills Oakley Lawyers, will discuss the role of administrators, receivers and liquidators including what they do, how the appointment to a tenant affects a lease, what a landlord must do if one is appointed to a tenant and what the effect on a tenant is if one is appointed to a tenant. Australia s Property Future Steve Tighe is one of Australia s most compelling speakers on the future and innovation. He is recognised for his thought-provoking observations on today s society, and his ability to express key insights about the future in an engaging and entertaining fashion. Steve is renowned for his clever use of metaphors, images and case studies, taking his audience on a virtual journey into the future, whilst alerting them to the drivers of future change and the implications for their business. In this presentation, Steve will outline the impact that future population changes could have on the Australian property market. In doing so, Steve will explore and discuss several scenarios for Australia s property futures including the future of home ownership, growth of regional areas versus urban areas, the impact of telecommuting, the growing importance placed on self-contained employment by local councils and the emergence of suburban villages Commonwealth Games: Rising to the Opportunity With the Commonwealth Games set to take place on the Gold Coast in 2018, the Minister will discuss the opportunities the Games will bring for tourism, major events and small business including infrastructure and property development to assist in hosting the games not just for the host city, but across the entire state. Paul will also discuss the future of temporary accommodation for the mining industry including new products, potential methods for reducing DA time and the development potential of properties which can be utilised for non-residential workers camps and how this will impact overall on the property market in mining towns. Want to Know What They re Thinking? The ability to communicate and express thoughts and ideas is a uniquely human concept. We use our communicative In this powerful seminar you will learn how the Human Brain is wired up and perceives information, the differences between how genders process information, eye cues and micro-expressions, lie detection, deceitful body language and stressors and persuasive influence and voice modulation. At the end of the seminar attendees will have a basic introductory understanding of the nature and science behind human communication and be able to detect negative and deceitful behaviours in others. Simon Treselyan spent 19 years as a Special Forces Covert Operations Team Leader, specialising in Agent Handling, Surveillance, Interrogation, Hostage Negotiation and Debriefing of victims of torture. This is one session you will not want to miss! Life After Death The 2012 Motivational Address Life after death is a subject most people never live to tell, except in the case of our remarkable motivational speaker. In October 2006 Sam Cawthorn died in a major car accident, was resuscitated, in a coma for a week, in hospital for five months and in a wheelchair for a year. His story is one of remarkable resilience and determination despite his doctors saying that he would never survive. Sam s presentation focuses on fixing the limits that we currently have. It provides bullet proof strategies to unleash those who are stuck and will awaken those who feel they are not adequate enough to push the limits to maximise their potential and productivity. In this address Sam speaks about his personal triumphs and will take you on a journey of discovery through their own lives. He speaks about a principle of not just bouncing back from crises, but bouncing forward through innovation, creativity and thought leadership. Sam s inspiring stories, thought provoking ideas and challenges will keep you on the edge of your seat. This address is one not to be missed! 4
