1 Harvard Public Library Zini Digital Magazines App Instructins fr Kindle Fire The Harvard Public Library nw ffers access t current digital editins f many ppular magazines fr a variety f devices thrugh a digital magazine service called Zini. There are n hlds, n checkut perids, and n limit t the number f magazines yu can dwnlad. Yu may keep digital cpies f magazines fr as lng as yu wish. Zini fr Libraries App Instructins Create a Harvard Public Library Digital Magazine Cllectin Accunt 1. G t HPL s Digital Magazine Cllectin: 2. Brwse the cllectin. When yu find a magazine yu wuld like t check ut click n the magazine and then click n CHECKOUT. 3. If yu have nt already created an accunt, click CREATE NEW ACCOUNT. Enter yur Harvard Public Library card number with n spaces. If yur card begins with a "D" use a capital D. Click NEXT. 4. Enter yur infrmatin and finish creating yur accunt by clicking CREATE ACCOUNT. 5. If yu wuld like t receive ntificatins f when the next issue is available, click the bx next t me when the next issue is available. 6. Yu may KEEP BROWSING fr additinal magazines r if yu are dne, click the x in the upper right hand crner f the windw. 7. The next step is t read yur magazine in the Zini App. Install the Zini fr Libraries App NOTE: The Zini fr Libraries app is used nly t read yur magazines. Magazines frm the HPL s Digital Magazine Cllectin can nly be brwsed and checked ut n HPL s Digital Magazine Cllectin page: using yur Kindle Fire s web brwser SILK. Zini Kindle Fire 1

2 1. Enable Side Lading In rder t lad the Zini fr Libraries app n the Kindle Fire, first a device setting must be changed t allw the side lading f apps. By turning n side lading, the user can then install apps frm surces ther than the Amazn app stre. Please nte, the enable side lading prcedure varies based n the versin r generatin f yur Kindle Fire device. Instructins fr the newest Kindle Fire devices are first, fllwed by instructins fr previus generatins. New Kindle Fire/HD/HDX Devices: Select the Settings icn frm the App Menu. Under Persnal, tap Security. Under Advanced, tap the radial buttn next t Apps frm Unknwn Surces - Allw installatin f applicatins that are nt frm Appstre. A warning message will display. Tap OK. 3 Older Kindle Fire devices Older Kindle Fire devices require a different setup prcedure t enable apps frm Unknwn Surces: Frm the hme screen f yur Kindle Fire device, put yur finger n the tp f the screen and swipe dwn. Depending n yur versin, tap Mre r Settings. Depending n yur versin, tap Device r Applicatins. Zini Kindle Fire 3

4 Next t Allw Installatin f Applicatins r Apps frm Unknwn Surces, tap On. A warning message will display. Tap OK. Return t the hme screen by tapping the hme icn. 2. Dwnlad and install the Zini fr Libraries App T dwnlad the Zini fr Libraries app, g t the Harvard Public Library Zini Magazine Cllectin page in yur Silk brwser at: Scrll t the bttm f the web page where links t the apps are lcated. Click n the link t the Kindle HD/HDX app t dwnlad. Depending n the generatin f yur Kindle, the fllwing will happen: A ppup may appear asking if yu wuld like t dwnlad the file. Tap Cnfirm. Or, yu may get a warning that this type f file can harm yur device. Tap OK. Zini Kindle Fire 4

5 Open the dwnlad when prmpted r g directly t Dwnlads under the Kindle Fire s web brwser SILK s menu icn (the three hrizntal lines n the tp left). Click n Dwnlads- yu shuld see the Zini file n this list. Once the dwnlad is cmplete, tap the file and select Install and then press Open when the installatin is cmplete. Use the Zini fr Libraries App 1. Open the Zini fr Libraries app and tap n Lg In. 2. Enter the address yu used t create yur Harvard Public Library Zini accunt and tap Next. 3. Enter the passwrd yu created when setting up yur Harvard Public Library Zini accunt and tap Lg In. 4. The Zini fr Libraries app will pen and display the magazines yu have checked ut. 5. Select a magazine yu have previusly checked ut by tapping n the cver. 6. The issue will pen fr reading and begin dwnlading t yur device. 7. Cntinue reading yur magazine, r finish reading ffline after the dwnlad is finished. Remving a Magazine If yu wish t remve a magazine frm yur device, tap EDIT in the tp right crner then tap the x. Yur magazine will be remved frm yur device. Tap DONE t g back t yur magazine cllectin. Yu can always redwnlad the magazine by tapping the clud symbl beneath the cver. Checking Out and Reading Additinal Magazines Yu cannt check ut magazines within the Zini fr Libraries app. T check ut additinal magazines return t the Harvard Public Library s Zini Magazine Cllectin web page using the Kindle Fire s web brwser Silk: After yu have checked ut additinal magazines g back t the Zini app t read them. Nte: Magazines can nly be read thrugh the Zini app. Yu cannt read a magazine in the Silk web brwser. Zini Kindle Fire 5
