3 MS Handbk I 3 INTRODUCTION Master f Science in Psychlgy Prgram Handbk This handbk is designed t serve as an infrmatinal resurce t help students in the Master f Science in Psychlgy Prgram prgress thrugh the Master s Degree Prgram in a timely manner and address the majr issues related t meeting graduatin requirements. The handbk is prvided t supplement the University Handbk which cntains many imprtant university plicies and prcedures with which ne shuld be familiar. 4 MS Handbk I 4 Kelley Durham kelldurham@gmail.cm MS PROGRAM OVERVIEW The full time MS prgram is designed fr cmpletin in apprximately tw years (depending upn the length f time required t cmplete the MS Thesis research requirement). The MS degree requirements als include an 8- hur per week research labratry experience during bth years, and successful cmpletin f an empirical thesis. While the MS prgram requires a minimum number f curse credits, this des nt preclude students frm attaining mre than the minimum requirements. MS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Overview Minimum Supervised Research Hurs: 8 hurs per week (2 years) Ttal f 45 credits required fr MS Graduatin Empirical Thesis Research Presentatin Requirement Research Presentatin Requirement Prir t graduatin, each MS student will be expected t present his r her research at a lcal, natinal, internatinal, r university cnference. This will invlve talking with yur mentr abut where yur wrk wuld be best suited fr submittal. Each spring, Drexel spnsrs a research cnference in which graduate research prpsals fr pster presentatins are welcmed. Psi Chi (the Natinal Hnr Sciety in Psychlgy) als spnsrs a similar event each year that is specific t psychlgical research. Mst areas f specializatin have lcal, reginal, and internatinal cnferences where submissin deadlines ccur apprximately 6-8 mnths prir t the cnference; submissins are peer- reviewed t determine if they are accepted fr presentatin at the cnference. Each student must dcument ne first- authr presentatin f research at a cnference prir t graduatin. Students are nt limited t participating in just ne presentatin and are encuraged t participate in mre. Curriculum Planning The MS Curriculum has been designed t prvide an individualized training experience fr students interested in pursuing an advanced educatin in scientific psychlgy in rder t btain further educatinal r career gals related t the field. Althugh students will cmplete a basic cre curriculum, they will have the pprtunity t individually tailr the remainder f their cursewrk and labratry experiences, under the guidance f their Faculty Mentr and the Prgram Directr, t explre their interests within the field. Hwever, students are discuraged frm deviating significantly frm the curse sequence utlined belw. Each student is expected t devte 8 hurs per week t labratry wrk under the guidance f his r her mentr. Alternatively, a student and faculty mentr may agree t assign sme f this labratry time t anther labratry with which they have develped cllabratin. The 8 hurs per week are dcumented at the end f each term by the faculty mentr and prgram directr. A ttal f 45 credits is required fr graduatin. *Special Nte: When signing up fr classes, there may be multiple sectins available. Make sure t sign

Required Cre Curses The MS curriculum has six cre curses required fr all students in the prgram. In such a case, students will be ntified f the change. Special Nte: Data Analysis III has been added at students request s it is expected that mst students will take this curse in the Data Analysis sequence. The remaining credits are cmpleted thrugh independent study, cmpletin f MS theses research, and elective curses. Each f these is described in the subsequent sectins. Independent Study Curses The MS curriculum strngly suggests that students take ne 3- credit curse f Independent Study but students can chse t take up t tw Independent Study curses. These curses will ffer the student an pprtunity t partially structure the cmpulsry 8 hurs per week f labratry experience thrugh a cncentrated area f study that will prvide the basis fr the student s thesis. The Independent Study Frms are cmpleted in cnsultatin with the student s mentr at the time f registratin fr the winter and/r spring terms f the first prgram year. The curse cde fr Independent Study is usually PSY 865. Hwever, please nte that students must fill ut the Independent Study frm fund n the MS Prgram website and submit t the Academic Crdinatr by Week 2 f each term, at the latest. Students are then registered fr this curse by the prgram s Academic Crdinatr and this curse number may vary. Master s Thesis Curses At the time the student begins thesis wrk (usually at the end f the first prgram year), the fllwing curse sequence is prvided fr all wrk directed tward cmpletin f the Master s Thesis. Beginning in the secnd prgram year, students wrking n their theses shuld register fr ne f these curses per term in the prper sequence. Electives shuld be selected in cnsultatin with the student s mentr/advisr in accrdance with their individual curriculum needs and areas f research. A number f electives are available t all MS students; these are listed as Unrestricted Electives. Additinal elective curses are available nly with the apprval f their advisr, the instructr, and prgram directr; these curses are listed as Restricted Electives. In rder t request permissin t register fr a curse listed under Restricted Electives, the student must cntact the curse instructr, the MS directr, and the MS academic crdinatr via e- mail with a written statement explaining the student s qualificatins t take the curse (e.g., any required pre- requisites) and why the curse is imprtant t the student s curriculum. The curse instructr ultimately reserves the right t determine whether r nt a student will be permitted t the class as well as hw many students frm the prgram will be permitted in the class fr a given term. This same prcedure applies t requests t enrll in curses utside f the Department f Psychlgy. When cnsidering a curse in anther department, the student shuld cntact the curse instructr first t request permissin t take the class. Abve all, students are encuraged t pursue their interests and if a student is interested in such a curse, he r she shuld check with the curse s instructr, the student s mentr, and the MS directr. The rder f requesting permissin t enrll in a Restricted Curse is as fllws. 1. Interested students shuld seek apprval frm their mentr befre asking the curse instructr if they can register fr the curse. 2. Next, they shuld the curse instructr indicating they received apprval frm their mentr, which wuld include cpying their mentr n the . As well, MS students shuld include a brief paragraph n why the curse is imprtant t them and hw it relates t their area f research r clinical and career gals. 3. If faculty apprves the student's request, the student shuld frward the respnse t Damaris Oquend (d42@drexel.edu) fr Dr. Spiers final apprval. Damaris will need t register students because the curse is restricted. 4. It is recgnized that MS students need t register by the final few weeks f registratin (typically week 8 r 9 f the previus term) in rder t plan their schedules and shuld seek final apprval by instructrs at this time. Belw are the lists f unrestricted and restricted electives at this time. Please nte that sme elective curses may nt be available in a given year, therefre students shuld check the availability f curses when planning their curriculum fr upcming terms. It is als imprtant t nte that nt all curses are ffered annually; sme may be available every ther year, while thers may nt be available in a given year due t a faculty member leaving the university r participating in a sabbatical. Mst imprtantly, ur department may have special curses taught by prfessrs frm ther departments r universities that will nly be available fr a single term. 9 MS Handbk I 9 fr any ptential issues FACULTY MENTORS It is imprtant fr students t familiarize themselves with the rles and respnsibilities f each persn with whm they will wrk alngside thrughut their tenure in the MS Psychlgy prgram. The MS Prgram Directr is administratively respnsible fr the prgram and will need t prvide final apprval ( sign ff ) regarding all frms, evaluatins, and dcumentatin f cmpletin fr all MS requirements. Fr this reasn, the Prgram Directr is listed n fficial university dcuments as the Prgram Advisr. Students individual Faculty Mentrs and Advisrs will prvide them with guidance cncerning their individualized academic curriculum and research training. Mentrs will discuss and determine hw the 8 hurs per week f required research is spent. Sme mentrs chse t assign 8 structured hurs each week while thers allw fr flexibility, suggesting mre hurs when specific tasks r duties are needed and fewer hurs at ther times. Mentrs may require students t wrk in their respective research labratries r may cllabrate with ther faculty r psychlgists t have students wrk in ther labratries r research- related duties. The student s mentr will need t sign a statement at the end f each term that dcuments the student s cmpletin f required labratry time. Additinally, a mentr will discuss and help the student decide what areas t cver in the Independent Study curses. At the end f the year, the student s mentr will cmplete an evaluatin frm that he r she will share with the prgram directr in a required end f year meeting. Students shuld nte that they are respnsible fr arranging all meetings with their individual mentr/advisr as well as turning in all required frms n time t the prgram s Academic Crdinatr. RESEARCH LAB SUPPORT The Department f Psychlgy prvides each mentr with $750 f research lab supprt fr materials r expenses assciated with the MS student s research and/r MS student travel fr each student wrking with the mentr. These funds may als be used twards GRE preparatry curses and prfessinal develpment. This lab supprt is prvided fr each year the student is in the prgram; hwever, funds nt used by the end f the academic year d nt carry ver t the fllwing academic year. Fr example, if a labratry is c- led by tw individuals, each with a new MS student, then $1,500 wuld available fr research purpses each year. If nly $750 is used befre the cnclusin f the academic year, the remaining $750 will be returned t the Department and $1,500 will again be made available at the beginning f the new academic year. When the MS student and his r her mentr wish t make a request t utilize lab supprt funds, student and mentr must cmplete a pre- apprval frm (available nline). Research Lab Supprt Prcess The $750 research lab supprt is available at any time befre June 1 f each academic year. If students d nt request the $750 research lab supprt by the deadline, they frfeit the funds fr that academic year. The pre- apprval frm shuld be submitted t the Prgram Academic Crdinatr. The frm must be signed by yu, yur mentr, and the Prgram Directr befre being submitted. Once the pre- apprval frm is submitted, the Prgram Academic Crdinatr will btain the apprval signature frm the Department Chair. A cpy f the apprved frm will be returned t the student s faculty mentr.

10 MS Handbk I 10 The apprved frm is attached t a purchase r check request and submitted t the department by the Prgram Academic Crdinatr. The reimbursement may take several weeks. Allwable labratry expenses: MS student travel, labratry supplies (e.g. tests, bks, frms, equipment, etc.). It is expected that the MS student will have the pprtunity t be invlved in labratry activities in which these supplies will be used. THESIS REQUIREMENTS Students shuld begin wrking n their theses during the first prgram year by develping ideas and examining the existing research literature. The student shuld wrk with the mentr/thesis advisr frm the beginning f this prcess by discussing pssible thesis ideas. A suggested thesis timeline can be fund at the end f this handbk as well as n the website. The mentr/thesis advisr can prvide guidance in all areas f develping and writing a thesis and must apprve the thesis tpic befre the student begins significant wrk n the prpsed thesis tpic. Students shuld purchase the Publicatin Manual f the American Psychlgical Assciatin. Others have als fund it helpful t purchase Dissertatins and Theses frm Start t Finish: Psychlgy and Related Fields, by Cne and Fster. Students are als encuraged t read at least ne dctral dissertatin r Master s thesis recently cmpleted by a student in the Department f Psychlgy. The student s mentr/thesis advisr r the Prgram Academic Crdinatr can assist in selecting an exemplary mdel thesis. Reading and reviewing such dissertatins and theses will help the student better understand what is expected in a successful Master s thesis. When beginning t plan this empirical thesis, the student must first develp a nvel hypthesis based n the available literature. The student must then determine hw data will be cllected. In sme instances, depending n the particular research questins t be addressed, preexisting data sets may be analyzed if cllecting new data is impractical r impssible. Thesis Cmmittee Each student, alng with the assistance f the student s mentr/thesis advisr, must chse his r her wn thesis cmmittee based n faculty members research interests. The cmmittee is required t have a minimum f three members; f these three members, tw must be faculty frm the Department f Psychlgy (i.e., cre r adjunct faculty) and it is recmmended that ne be a credentialed individual faculty frm either utside the Department f Psychlgy r Drexel University. Members frm utside Drexel University wh have nt previusly served n thesis cmmittees in the Department f Psychlgy must submit a cpy f his r her curriculum vitae (CV) and be apprved by the student s thesis chair. While the reasning behind having a cmmittee member frm utside the Department f Psychlgy is t prvide additinal expertise r perspectives t thse prvided by the cmmittee members frm within the Department, a student may request that this be waived in lieu f a full departmental cmmittee. Such requests will be cnsidered n a case- by- case basis. Students shuld have their respective cmmittees assembled by the end f the first prgram year; cmmittees must be set prir t the thesis defense. T prperly d s, the student shuld speak with all prpsed cmmittee members t determine if they are interested in participating and, if s, if they agree t take part in the student s thesis cmmittee. The student s mentr/thesis advisr usually chairs the cmmittee, thus it is encuraged that students wrk clsely with their respective mentrs in selecting an apprpriate thesis cmmittee. It is the student s respnsibility t arrange fr any meetings

11 MS Handbk I 11 that are required with all cmmittee members and prvide each member with a written draft (i.e., f the prpsal r final thesis, depending upn the purpse f the meeting) generally tw weeks befre, s that they may review the draft and prperly prepare fr the meeting. Thesis Meetings With regard t cmpletin f the empirical thesis, the student must have tw meetings with his r her thesis cmmittee, which are: 1) a prpsal meeting, in which the cmplete thesis prpsal is presented and apprved by the cmmittee, and 2) a defense meeting, in which the final prject is described and reviewed by the cmmittee. While nly tw cmmittee meetings are required prir t thesis defense, mst students meet frequently with their mentrs and cmmittee members fr insight and guidance thrughut the prcess f cmpsing their respective theses. The thesis prpsal and defense apprval must be dcumented using the crrespnding frms. The cmmittee members and Prgram Directr must sign bth frms, which can be fund in this handbk s appendices. A prpsed thesis timeline is als prvided at the end f this handbk t prvide benchmarks tward the successful cmpletin f the student s thesis. In the thesis prpsal meeting, the student s cmmittee evaluates whether the prpsed tpic is apprpriate fr a thesis and whether the prpsed methds fr addressing that tpic are suitable. The thesis prpsal defense is a frmal meeting in which the student presents his r her prpsal and receives cnstructive feedback frm the cmmittee, fllwed by a vte by the cmmittee n whether r nt t apprve the prpsal. If the prpsal des nt gain apprval, the student shuld adjust in accrdance with the cmmittee s feedback. Once the student has btained cmmittee apprval and submitted the cmpleted Master s Thesis Prpsal Apprval frm t the Prgram Academic Crdinatr, wrk n the thesis may prceed. An additinal frm is required t be submitted fllwing the cmmittee s thesis defense meeting (see the handbk sectin n Thesis Defense). All thesis meetings are pen. The prpsal meeting and final defense meeting shuld be annunced at least tw weeks (and minimum f 1 week) befre s that ther students and faculty may attend. Upn scheduling yur prpsal r defense with yur cmmittee: 1. the Graduate student Representative (Jennie David: jendavid@bu.edu) with an annuncement t pst t the listserv. Please use the fllwing frmat as a guide: [Yur name] is [prpsing/defending] [his/her] [thesis] at [time] in [lcatin]. The title f [his/her] [thesis] is, Title. All are welcme t attend. 2. Print an annuncement flyer with the same infrmatin. Place this flyer in the new, dedicated space n the bulletin bard acrss frm the main Department f Psychlgy Office. Yu will see a sign there that says, Thesis and Dissertatin Annuncements. Institutinal Review Bard If planning t cmplete an empirical thesis using human participants (including studies utilizing existing data sets related t human participants), the student must btain apprval frm the Drexel University Institutinal Review Bard (IRB), which is charged with the duty f ensuring that human rights are prtected in any research prject. There is a specific prtcl fr submitting a research prpsal t the IRB separate frm the prpsal t the student s thesis cmmittee. Once IRB apprved, there are specific instructins and requirements t fllw regarding all research recrds. The prcess fr IRB apprval typically takes several mnths t cmplete and requires the submittal f many details and infrmatin

12 MS Handbk I 12 cncerning the prpsed research, including all the requisite IRB paperwrk and frms. In additin, it is required t cmplete specific cmputer- assisted trained prtcls (i.e., Human Subjects and HIPAA/Medical Research) n the Drexel Research website. If cnducting an empirical study at a site ther than Drexel University, the student will need t btain apprval frm the Drexel University IRB as well as the remte site s IRB. Research Ethics All students in the Department f Psychlgy must fully cnfrm t the American Psychlgical Assciatin (APA) Ethical Principles and Cde f Cnduct cncerning research and publicatin. Additinally, students must cmply with all university plicies cncerning the cnduct f research and scientific integrity. All university plicies with regard t falsificatin f data, fraudulent claims, and plagiarism will be strictly enfrced. Befre perfrming research, all students must read the mst recent APA Ethics Cde and cmplete the APA Ethics Attestatin Frm (bth are available n the MS Psychlgy website under Frms ). The APA Ethics Attestatin Frm must be signed by the student, their mentr, and the prgram directr. In additin, all students need t cmplete CITI Training ( Students shuld discuss which CITI curses they are required t take with their mentr. Thesis Defense The student must successfully defend his r her thesis in rder t be eligible t graduate. The thesis defense is a meeting in which the student presents his r her thesis ratinale and findings. Each student is required t cntact all members f his r her thesis cmmittee t determine a date and time that everyne will be available fr the defense. It is recmmended that this date is set at least fur t six weeks in advance. The student must als schedule a cnference rm fr the defense thrugh the Prgram Academic Crdinatr. It is the respnsibility f the student t cnfirm this lcatin and then ntify all cmmittee members f the time and place fr the defense. In the thesis meeting, the student will present his r her thesis, fllwed by a questin- and- answer sessin psed by the thesis cmmittee. The cmmittee will then vte n the verall wrk f the thesis, evaluating every aspect frm literature review t cnclusins, then determine whether r nt the student passed the defense.
