Full-Time Student A full-time student is ne wh is studying n a full-time basis treating studies like a full-time jb, attending t cursewrk and research in a prfessinal manner, being in cnsultatin with and available t his/her supervisr at regular intervals (daily and/r weekly by mutual agreement) t mnitr prgress (please see apprpriate sectins f the current Schl f Graduate Studies Calendar definitins f full and part-time student and status; prgram duratin; fees fr graduate students; and financial supprt fr full-time students). 2. Part-Time Student A part-time student is ne wh usually has a full-time jb utside the university, but wants t wrk twards his r her graduate degree n a part-time basis. A part-time student is limited t 3 graduate curses per academic sessin (Sept 1 Aug 31) and will usually take mre time t cmplete the degree (M.A.Sc. prgram: up t five years 60 mnths - frm riginal date f registratin if student began as part-time ; Ph.D. prgram: up t eight years 96 mnths frm riginal date f registratin if student began as part-time ). Part-time students will als be required t cnsult and have regular cntact with their supervisr at times cnvenient fr bth parties. Part-time students are nt eligible fr financial supprt frm the department, nr Teaching Assistantships (nr Schlarship Equivalent) (please see apprpriate sectins f the current Schl f Graduate Studies Calendar as nted abve in sectin 1. Full-Time Student ). 3. Full-Time Student with Overtime Status re: Tuitin Fees Overtime students are thse wh have been in a Master s prgram fr mre than 2 years (24 mnths r 6 terms) r a Ph.D. prgram fr mre than 4 years (48 mnths r 12 terms) and have cmpleted all curse requirements and research but have nt cmpleted writing and defending their thesis. Overtime students may be eligible t pay reduced fees. Fr example, Visa students in term 7 r greater f a Master s prgram r term 13 r greater f a Ph.D. prgram will pay Canadian fees. Overtime students are advised t check the university regulatins in the apprpriate sectins f the current Schl f Graduate Studies Calendar regarding prgram duratin fr Master s and Ph.D. students, as well as the sectin n fees. 2 MASTER f Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) 1. Prgram Requirements The minimum curse requirement is fur half curses, at least three f which must be at the 700 level. Only curses taught in the Departments f the Schl f Engineering and Applied Sciences (listed here: cunt twards the minimum curse requirement, unless permitted by the Department and the Schl f Graduate Studies. Entering graduate students in Masters r Dctral prgrams within the Faculty f Engineering are required t cmplete a career planning exercise within their first academic year (September t August). Student will bk thrugh their department a planning sessin with a career specialist within the faculty and subsequently prduce a reprt befre the end f their first year. The reprt shuld nt exceed 2 pages and must be submitted t the department's graduate advisr befre the end f August in their first year. Students entering in May f a given year may chse t submit the reprt in the secnd academic year instead. Students are required t present a thesis that embdies the results f riginal wrk that the candidate has cmpleted and which demnstrates cmpetence in Mechanical Engineering. Only the standard frmat thesis, as described in the dcument Guide fr The Preparatin f Master s and Dctral Theses (available frm the Schl f Graduate Studies website), will be accepted fr examinatin. An ral defence f the thesis is required. Examining Cmmittee Each M.A.Sc. student must successfully defend his/her thesis in an ral examinatin befre a cmmittee prpsed by the Supervisr and apprved by the Department Chair r his/her delegate. A member f the cmmittee, ther than the supervisr, will be appinted t chair the cmmittee. The cmmittee shall be cmpsed f 3 (three) members, including the supervisr. In the case f csupervisin, the cmmittee will cnsist f 4 (fur) members including the supervisrs. Students currently enrlled in the M.A.Sc. prgram may be transferred t the Ph.D. prgram befre they cmplete their Master s requirements. Regulatins gverning this scenari are stated in the current Schl f Graduate Studies Calendar. If a student is granted permissin t enter the Ph.D. prgram while cncurrently cmpleting the M.A.Sc. prgram, the Schl f Graduate Studies requires the student t cmplete all requirements fr the M.A.Sc. prgram (including defense and submissin f thesis fr binding) within 2 (tw) mnths f the date f entry in the Ph.D. prgram. Students wh d nt cmplete the requirements fr the Master s degree within the tw mnths will lse their status as a Ph.D. candidate and be returned t Master s status. 4. M.A.Sc.Thesis Defence The thesis defence starts with the candidate s presentatin f the main elements f the thesis, including the relevance f his/her wrk, apprach, samples f the mst imprtant findings, and cntributins. The presentatin shuld nt exceed 20 minutes. This is fllwed by ne rund f questins and anther rund f fllw-up questins, as apprpriate. The duratin f the Master s defence (including the candidate s presentatin) is expected t vary frm 1¼ t 1¾ hrs, but it nrmally shuld nt exceed 2 hrs. If the examining cmmittee is unsatisfied with the candidate s perfrmance in the thesis defence, the student must retake the defence after cmpleting any thesis revisins which may be recmmended by the examining cmmittee. 7 2. Supervisin Supervisin f Ph.D. students is gverned by the Schl f Graduate Studies regulatins as utlined in the graduate calendar. As sn as pssible, and nt later than 9 (nine) mnths after cmmencing dctral studies, a Supervisry Cmmittee fr the student shall be apprved by the Department Chair r his/her delegate, n the recmmendatin f the supervisr and in cnsultatin with the student. The Supervisry Cmmittee will nrmally cnsist f at least 3 (three) members (4 members in the case f c-supervisin). One member, whse schlarly interests include the area f the student s main interest, will nrmally be frm utside the department if a suitable individual is available. Anther member may be frm utside the university with departmental apprval and permissin f the Dean f Schl f Graduate Studies. 3. Supervisry Cmmittee Meetings The Ph.D. student s Supervisry Cmmittee shall meet with the student at least nce a year between the dates f September 1 st and August 31 st f the fllwing year. At each meeting, the student shall prepare a 5 10 page prgress reprt t be given t the cmmittee members at least ne week in advance f the meeting. At each meeting, the student shall give a shrt minute presentatin f his/her research prgress, entertaining questins frm cmmittee members. Subsequent meetings shall be held t mnitr prgress twards the cmprehensive exam as well as the cmpletin f the thesis. September 2015 Page 7 f 16

11 Ph.D. Cmprehensive Examinatin Purpse The purpse f the cmprehensive examinatin is t test the breadth f knwledge and maturity f apprach ver a range f tpics that are bth within and peripheral t the candidate s discipline. The candidate s level f achievement in this examinatin will determine pssible academic backgrund deficiencies that the candidate may have. Successful cmpletin f the cmprehensive examinatin is a necessary requirement fr the candidate t cntinue in the prgram. Timing The student is expected t cmplete all requirements f the cmprehensive examinatin within 20 mnths f first registratin in the Ph.D. prgram, with an upper limit f 24 mnths. Special exceptins require the apprval f the Department Chair r designate and the Graduate Schl. Parttime students must take the cmprehensive examinatin by the end f the 36 th mnth. Nrmally, curse requirements will be cmpleted befre the Cmprehensive Exam, but this is nt a requirement. Likewise, preliminary research results are nt required, but the student is expected t present and defend a viable research prpsal including anticipated new cntributins t the existing scientific literature. It is the respnsibility f the Supervisr t recmmend and ntify the Departmental Graduate Administratr, at least tw mnths in advance, that a candidate will take the examinatin. In cnsultatin with the supervisry cmmittee, the supervisr nminates a cmprehensive examinatin cmmittee and submits the nminatin fr apprval by the Department Chair r his/her designate. Once the cmmittee is apprved, it is the respnsibility f the examinatin cmmittee Chair t initiate and versee all administrative arrangements f the examinatin, including the exact dates f the written and ral parts f the exam. 12 Frmat f the Examinatin The cmprehensive examinatin will cnsist f tw parts, which are utlined belw. Part A: Breadth and Depth f Knwledge The bjective f this part f the exam is t test the candidate s cmprehensin as well as breadth and depth f knwledge f his/her discipline area, nrmally at the senir undergraduate/junir graduate level. Althugh the written exam fcuses primarily n the candidate s understanding f fundamental cncepts in tw technical areas related t his/her research tpic, the scpe f the ral part extends t examining the depth f knwledge in the candidate s discipline area and pssible deficiencies in his/her academic backgrund. The cmmittee will decide tw subject areas in which candidate will be examined n, and decide which tw cmmittee members will write the tw questins that will be given t the student. Written ntice f the tw subject areas and dates f the written and ral parts f the exam must be prvided t the student, as well as a ntificatin t examinatin cmmittee members indicating/cnfirming same. The examinatin ntice t the student must als include the names f the examinatin cmmittee members. The tw cmmittee members preparing the written questins will circulate the questins t the exam cmmittee. The chair f the cmmittee will seek feedback frm the exam cmmittee and reach cnsensus n the tw questins. The Chair f the cmprehensive exam cmmittee submits questins t the Graduate Prgram Administratr fr preparing in standard frmat. Student t pick up questins frm Graduate Prgram Administratr and return answers within 7 hurs. Cpies f answers t the 2 questins will be distributed t cmprehensive examinatin cmmittee. In the ral part f the exam, the candidate is free t chse whether t start with Part A (the tw questins) r Part B (the research prpsal). T initiate the questins fr Part A f the examinatin, the candidate shuld prvide a brief synpsis (maximum f 5 minutes) f his/ her answers t the tw written questins. September 2015 Page 12 f 16

13 Part B: Research Prpsal The candidate shall submit a reprt n the research prgram: up t a maximum f 40 pages in length, INCLUDING all figures, graphs, illustratins, tables and appendices (but nt including the list f references). The reprt shuld be typed duble-spaced; 12 pint Times New Rman; ne inch margins n all sides. IF THE REPORT DOES NOT CONFORM WITH THESE GUIDELINES, IT MAY BE RETURNED TO THE CANDIDATE FOR REVISION AND CAN RESULT IN DELAYING THE EXAMINATION SCHEDULE. The reprt must include: (i) a critical survey f the directly related literature in the field; (ii) an utline f the prpsed research prgram including its justificatin, the apprach t be taken, specific analytical r experimental methds, perceived r anticipated prblems, preliminary results (if available); (iii) an accunt f expected cntributins the prpsed research will bring t the existing scientific literature; and (iv) a prpsed timetable t accmplish the task. A cpy f the reprt must be made available t each member f the Examinatin Cmmittee at least tw weeks prir t the date f the ral examinatin. Examinatin Result The candidate s achievement in each f the parts shall be judged as: Pass r Fail. The candidate must pass bth parts t successfully cmplete the cmprehensive exam. The cmmittee chair shall cmmunicate the result f the examinatin t the department chair, wh shall cmmunicate the result f the examinatin, in writing, t the student. Shuld the candidate fail either r bth parts, he/she may request a re-examinatin. The re-examinatin will fllw the same frmat as utlined abve, and must be cmpleted within six mnths f the first examinatin. The candidate will be allwed nly ne reexaminatin. 4.
