2 The Master f Science in Nursing and the Dctr f Nursing Practice degrees prepare students fr advanced clinical practice as an Adult-Gerntlgy Clinical Nurse Specialist. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an RN prepared at the Master s r Dctral level as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. The CNS is educated t care fr and imprve utcmes f acutely, critically, and chrnically ill patients by influencing the patient, family, nursing persnnel, and rganizatinal systems. The CNS is an expert clinician in a specialized area f nursing practice. Care is cntinuus and cmprehensive and may be prvided in a variety f settings. Care is prvided in a cllabrative mdel invlving patients, families, nurses, ther healthcare prviders, and administratrs. The CNS serves as: A leader, the CNS is an expert in the rles f cllabratr, cnsultant, researcher, and case manager t ptimize care t patients/clients. An expert clinician, the CNS assesses patients t prevent r reslve health prblems, develps and evaluates ppulatin -based prgrams f care, and designs and evaluates innvatin in nursing practice. The CNS fcuses n health prmtin and preventative care. The CNS prmtes advanced nursing care fr adult and geriatric patients/clients and prmtes the discipline f nursing. The graduate f the Adult-Gerntlgy CNS specializatin is eligible t take natinal certificatin examinatins; examples include the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health exam and the Adult- Gerntlgy Clinical Nurse Specialist exam administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the Adult-Gerntlgy Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist exam administered by the American Assciatin f Critical Care Nurses. In sme states, certificatin is required fr licensure as a CNS and fr reimbursement. CNS graduates are eligible t apply fr certificatin as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) as a Clinical Nurse Specialist thrugh the Kansas State Bard f Nursing. The faculty f WSU's Schl f Nursing supprts bth the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and the Nurse Practitiner (NP) rles t meet the needs f patient care delivery and the health care team. Therefre, the curriculum reflects bth the CNS and ACNP specialties. Sme didactic cursewrk is shared, while ther curses are specifically designed fr the CNS student. 4 Curse Descriptins: Curse Number & Title: N834, Adult/Older Adult CNS Practicum I (4 cr hrs) Curse Descriptin: An intensive clinical experience in which the student is expected t design, implement, and evaluate nursing care fr adult/lder adult ppulatins. Specialized areas f study are selected and may invlve health prmtin, health maintenance r illness care f acutely r chrnically ill adults. C-requisite: N840 and N866 Curse Objectives: The learner will be able t: 1. Demnstrate skills in advanced physical, psychscial, and functinal assessment with adults/lder adults. 2. Demnstrate integratin f thery and research while prviding care t patients and families. 3. Analyze patient and health care infrmatin fr diagnsing, prescribing and delivering advanced nursing care fr adults/lder adults. 4. Evaluate utcmes and interventins in a specific clinical setting. 5. Curse Number & Title: N952: Advanced Nursing Practice Preceptrship (3 credit hurs). Curse Descriptin: Cncentrated clinical practicum in the student s specializatin health care setting that emphasizes the management f care fr individuals. Students synthesize cncepts and principles frm previus classes and clinical experiences, applying theretical and research cntent t acute, chrnic, urgent and/r cmmn health prblems. Preceptrship is in a clinical agency apprpriate t the student s clinical interests. Prerequisites: Cmpletin f all cre and specialized curses in NP/CNS ptin; departmental cnsent Curse Objectives The learner will be able t: 1. Assess the physilgical and psychscial health status f clients with acute, chrnic, urgent, and/r cmmn health care prblems. 2. Prvide health care t individuals using established prtcls and current standards f care. 3. Prvide client teaching and cunseling fr illness preventin and health maintenance. 4. Apply apprpriate diagnstic and therapeutic (t include pharmaclgic, cmplementary, and nn-pharmaclgic) mdalities fr health cnditins. 5. Use cnsultatin and referral netwrks with expert prfessinals in the treatment f health care prblems. 6. Demnstrate the use f evidence-based practice t achieve therapeutic utcmes. 7. Maintain accurate recrds, legal dcuments, and reprts in the care f clients. 8. Cmmunicate effectively in verbal and written instances with patients, family, peers, and ther health care disciplines. 9. Incrprates knwledge f age-related changes and issues when planning and prviding care acrss the lifespan.

8 Evaluatin f Student Learning by Preceptrs PRECEPTOR STATEMENT Preceptrs assist curse respnsible faculty and are practitiners wh prvide direct teaching t students apprpriate t the curse and prgram bjectives. Preceptrs fr clinical specializatins may include bth advanced practice nurses (APRNs) and nn-nurse practitiners (usually physicians). Each preceptr must be credentialed and state licensed t practice in his/her specializatin. Natinal certificatin is highly encuraged althugh nt required in Kansas fr APRN status. Preceptrs must have educatinal preparatin and/r extensive practice experience apprpriate t his/her supervisry respnsibility. Newly prepared preceptrs must have at least ne year f practice experience in the specializatin. Orientatin t the preceptr rle, including prgram requirements, expectatins fr versight and evaluatin f students, are prvided fr each specializatin. Student evaluatin is the respnsibility f the faculty with input frm the preceptr. Experiences with preceptrs are evaluated by students and faculty t enhance prgram develpment and student learning activities. Dcumentatin f preceptr qualificatin is maintained in the Schl f Nursing.
