1 MASTER OF ADVANCED STUDIES IN CLINICAL MEDICINE SPECIALIZATION INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTION 1. Overall Objectives The Master f Advanced Studies (MAS) in Clinical Medicine, Specializatin in Infectius Diseases and Preventin and Cntrl f Infectin is a degree f specializatin which crrespnds t tw years f infectius diseases training within the Divisins f Infectius Diseases, Pediatrics, r Preventin and Cntrl f Infectin at the University Hspitals f Geneva (HUG). Prerequisites fr admissin include previus training f at least 3 years in general internal medicine r pediatrics and at least 1 year in infectius diseases research, epidemilgy, and preventin f infectius diseases in a university hspital r equivalent. The prgram has the fllwing general bjectives: 1. T prvide training in epidemilgy, diagnsis, treatment and preventin f all infectius diseases, as well as practical skills necessary t functin independently within the field 2. T prmte a multidisciplinary integratin f knwledge thrugh prficiency with ther disciplines invlved in treatment, preventin, and epidemilgy f infectius diseases 3. T prvide instructin n hw t accurately interpret recmmendatins, publicatins, and scientific reprts within the field f infectius diseases 2. Eligibility fr Admissin Candidates with the fllwing prerequisites may be eligible fr admissin: 1. At least 3 years f training in general internal medicine r pediatrics frm recgnized training institutins, including 2 years in a university hspital r equivalent 2. At least 1 year f training in infectius diseases research, epidemilgy, and preventin f infectius diseases 3. Length f Studies The perid fr btaining the MAS in Infectius Diseases and Preventin and Cntrl f Infectin is fur semesters (r a maximum f eight semesters fr candidates wh pt t enrll in part-time clinical immersin). 2 4. Study Prgram The prgram is divided int 3 sectins: (1) clinical immersin, (2) teaching f thery, and (3) an end-f-study prject. A. Objective f Clinical Immersin Cinical immersin crrespnding t the acquisitin f 90 Eurpean Credit Transfer and Accumulatin System (ECTS) credits will prvide the candidate with the pprtunity t acquire skills and knwledge specific t the field f infectius diseases and preventin and cntrl f infectin. Specific Skills Clinical Detailed knwledge abut endemic and imprted infectius diseases, including ncsmial and HIV-related infectins Ability t cnduct clinical examinatins and recrd histries that encmpass all aspects f infectin Ability t establish an investigatinal plan that encmpasses all micrbilgical techniques fr differential diagnses Ability t develp a treatment plan and mnitr its implementatin Knwledge f individual and scietal measures fr preventin f infectius diseases Knwledge f current and develping antimicrbial and prphylactic treatments, as well as prblems related t the use f antimicrbial agents. Specific understanding f pharmackinetics, side effects, and multi-drug interactins, including their therapeutic value (cst-utility) and legal issues related t the prescriptin and cntrl f drugs in Switzerland Familiarity with vaccines and immuntherapy Authrity t advise with respect t ptential expsure t infectius agents (i.e. ccupatinal, gegraphic, r circumstantial expsures) Knwledge f risks, diagnsis, and treatments f iatrgenic and ncsmial infectins Familiarity with sterilizatin, disinfectin and decntaminatin methds Knwledge and ability t interpret data and general cncepts in infectius disease epidemilgy, including their impact n public health, as well as preventative measures. Objective fr Teaching f Thery Teaching f thery, crrespnding t the acquisitin f 30 ECTS credits, prvides pprtunities fr the candidate t acquire knwledge specific t the field f infectius diseases and the preventin and cntrl f infectin. 4 Knwledge f data related t the cnsumptin f antibitics, develpment f antibitic resistance, and its epidemilgical and clinical implicatins Prficiency in the principles, cnduct, and interpretatin f prspective and retrspective clinical studies C. Specific Objectives f the End-f-Study Prject The end-f-study prject crrespnding t the acquisitin f 30 ECTS credits requires the candidate t cnduct clinical research under the directin f the MAS prgram manager r a designated individual. The aim f the prject is t familiarize the candidate with the basic methdlgical aspects f clinical research and enable him r her t make accurate evaluatins f clinical bservatins. The wrk must culminate in at least ne manuscript that has ptential t be published in a peer-reviewed scientific jurnal. 5. Study Plan A. Clinical Immersin (90 ECTS credits) The candidate will acquire skills listed in 4A during a clinical placement within the Divisins f Infectius Diseases, Pediatrics, r Preventin and Cntrl f Infectin at the HUG. During a perid f tw semesters, candidates will select rtatins that have nt previusly been cmpleted during their prerequisite clinical training in experimental infectin, epidemilgy, and preventin f infectius diseases. Clinical immersin cnsists f the fllwing: 1. At least 12 mnths f adult r pediatric cnsultatins in a hspital setting 2. A 12-mnth clinical rtatin in: a. Preventin and cntrl f infectin b. HIV Unit c. Micrbilgy d. Research and clinical studies The clinical immersin crrespnds t 90 ECTS credits. B. Structured Teaching f Thery (30 ECTS credits) Teaching f thery includes : 1. Structured cnferences 2. Interdepartmental cnferences 3. Jurnal club 4. Cursewrk 5. Specializatin days Teaching f thery als includes preparatin fr the final federal examinatin, which includes 15 wrkdays crrespnding t 4 ECTS credits. End-f-study prject (30 ECTS credits) As a rule, the aim is t cntribute t a scientific prject in the field f infectius diseases r the preventin and cntrl f infectin that will culminate in a manuscript with ptential t be published in a peer-reviewed scientific jurnal. Tw psitive evaluatins are required t validate this part f the MAS. Evaluatin f accumulated knwledge will be based n an examinatin cnsisting f tw parts: an individual ral examinatin f thery and a practical examinatin which includes a written reprt and ral interview regarding tw patient cnsultatins based n medical recrds. Bth parts are rganized and evaluated by members f the review cmmittee, appinted by the Swiss Sciety fr Infectius Diseases. The exam is held annually. Fr pediatricians, the evaluatins will fcus n pediatric infectius diseases. Outcmes fr bth parts f the examinatin will be designated as either successful r unsuccessful. Success fr bth parts is required t btain the MAS in Infectius Diseases and Cntrl and Preventin f Infectin. The end-f-study prject will be evaluated in accrdance with Article 12 f MAS Regulatin in Clinical Medicine.
