Term: Spring, 2012 Class hurs` 9:00 11:50 Classrm 1301 Office Hurs: By appintment Telephne: Curse Outline Curse descriptin and bjectives: Organizatins face majr challenges when they expand internatinally, merge, reshape the structure, new r mdify peratins and prcesses, intrduce new technlgies, respnd t gvernment regulatins, react t cmpetitin and respnd t changing custmer needs. A cmmn theme in these different challenges and undertakings is the need t change. Change is becming a regular feature f rganizatinal life. This curse intrduces yu t the thery and practice f rganizatinal change. The challenges faced by individuals in leadership and fllwership psitins in creating, r respnding t changes will be addressed. This curse allws yu t develp an understanding f changes at the rganizatinal and individual levels as well as the wide range f appraches that can be used t navigate and effectively manage change situatins. The curse als encurages critical thinking by intrducing discussins related t a multipleperspective t managing rganizatinal change. Thrugh the use f cases and a field research assignment, a pragmatic apprach supprts the theretical framewrks and paradigms. Learning Objectives The learning bjectives f this curse are t: 1. acquire an understanding f the verall prcesses required within the rganizatinal change prcess including its rle in strategic management, 2. analyze and effectively cpe with the frces f rganizatinal change internally and externally, 3. develp an understanding f the surces f change resistance and the varius methds fr cping, 4. examine the rle f cmmunicatins and leadership within the change management prcesses, 5. use alternative techniques fr change implementatin, as well as sustaining change actins, 6. design and implement a change management prgram f activities, and 7. apply curse theries and practices thrugh an examinatin f a lcal rganizatin. Prerequisites: Management 3031, 3051, 3061 and furth-year standing (a minimum f 90.0 credit hurs) Nte: Students are nt allwed t receive credit fr bth MGT 4380 and MGT 4390.

2 Curse pedaggy: A variety f appraches are used in this curse. Althugh the curse includes lectures and vides, it relies heavily n case analysis presentatins and discussins; therefre student participatin in class is imprtant. Required text Managing Organizatinal Change, A Multiple Perspectives Apprach, 2 nd Ed. Palmer I, Dunfrd R., and Akin, G, McGraw Hill Irwin, Additinal curse handuts and cases will be prvided either in hard cpy r n Mdle. Evaluatin: Class participatin 10% Exam I 20% Exam II 20% Individual analysis reprt r study 10% Grup case 15% Grup prject (ral presentatin and written reprt) 25% GRADING A % C % A % C % A % C % B % D % B % D % B % F % Attendance and participatin: Each student is expected t be an active participant in class discussins and exercises. Participatin marks are based n attendance and meaningful participatin in class. T stimulate the discussins, I will call n students with questins abut the readings, cases and exercises, s be prepared. It is yur respnsibility t btain curse annuncements and infrmatin prvided, as well as any material presented during a class that yu miss. Check yur s and Mdle. Exams: Tw exams will be given. Exams require yu t answer a variety f questins related t the cncepts discussed in the curse, the cases and exercises dealt with in class, and/r a new case. Nte the dates f the exams. If yu miss an exam due t nn-extenuating circumstances, yu will receive a zer fr this prtin f graded wrk. Exam grading criteria include: - Depth f the analysis: it is imprtant that yu g beynd the descriptive details in yur answers. In ther wrds, it is nt sufficient fr yu t recite the facts given in the case as an answer t a questin. Yu need t use yur analytical and rganizatinal skills. - Ability t apply cncepts and extend them given specific situatins: a recital f generic cncepts withut regard t the particular scenari prvided in the questin is nt an acceptable answer. - When asked t prvide yur wn recmmendatins r t utline a curse f actin, prper justificatin f yur answer is required. This entails demnstrating that yu have cnsidered different alternative prs and cns.

3 Cheating and Plagiarism: Plagiarism, cheating r ther frms f miscnduct will result in failure f part r all f the curse cmpnents and will be reprted. See the University f Lethbridge calendar fr details f the University s plicies with respect t student cnduct. Individual analysis reprt r study: This cnsists f a written analysis f a change situatin in which yu were actively invlved. Reprt shuld nt exceed fifteen pages duble-spaced. The written reprt shuld include: a brief descriptin f the situatin an analysis f the change prcess an evaluatin f the utcme lessns learned frm the change Yu will have already experienced the change situatin that yu are writing abut. This assignment requires yu t step utside the experience and lk at it as an analyst r a change specialist. In ther wrds, yu will need t lk at it frm a distance and study it as an external bserver and utilize the change cncepts cvered in the curse t address the fur issues mentined abve. Grup case presentatin: Each grup will be assigned r select a case fr analysis and t present it in class. Cases allw fr class debates and discussins. Yu are encuraged t use vide clips (prepared by the students) and/r ther creative activities. Once the cases are assigned, yu and yur grup members need t infrm the instructr as t the frmat yu intent t adpt fr yur sessin (and t get any supplementary material that culd be used in the presentatin). The time allwed fr yur presentatin is 60 t 75 minutes. See attached sheet fr further infrmatin and instructins. Grup prject This assignment fcuses n an examinatin and critiquing f an rganizatinal change prcess in an existing rganizatin. The prject cnsists f a researched reprt as well as a presentatin. Yu need t select any rganizatin which has experienced a significant change situatin t examine. Yur examinatin fcuses upn the (a) change prcess/events, (b) phases r stages, (including the use f change theries r best practices) (c) utcmes and (d) leadership emplyed t effect the change, and The reprt must als prvide a critique/analysis f the rganizatin s change prcess verall prcess. The grup will cnsist f three t fur students. The examinatin shuld use the theries, principles and practices discussed in class and/r yur supplementary research. Yur reprt shuld be based n semi-structured interviews with several senir and mid-management participants, published articles and bks abut the rganizatin, annual reprts, press releases, and/r ther relevant material. Yur reprt must be presented t the class. The written reprt is wrth 20% f the curse grade and the presentatin is wrth 5% f the grade. A ne-page prpsal f the prject is due n the date marked n the curse schedule. The prpsal shuld include: a brief descriptin f the change situatin the methds used t gather and analyze infrmatin a preliminary list f the material that will be used t cmpse the reprt a suggested table f cntents, and the hsting rganizatin.

4 Peer evaluatin: Bth grup cmpnents will be subject t peer evaluatins. Grup members need t discuss and agree n the cntributin that each member shuld make t the grup assignment. Students are encuraged t keep a diary f grup agreements and activities. Nte: Refer t University plicies as utlined in the calendar as they apply in this curse. Belw is a tentative curse schedule. 6 Why use grup exercises and cases: Instructins fr grup case r exercise This is a curse n leading rganizatinal change. Exercises r cases included in the curse design are directed by students and affrd different members f the grup t acquire and/r apply leadership skills as well as t experiment. In additin t the abve the benefits f ding grup wrk include the availability f multiple perspectives n the issue(s) in questin, the need t apply cllabratin skills and the ability t share the wrk that needs t be dne. The instructr will prvide access t cases that are n Mdle upn request. What each grup member needs t d: Early n, read the case r exercise that yu are respnsible fr. Meet with yur grup t prepare the case r exercise. Prepare t present the case elements and slutins, as yu see them. Demnstrate change management principles, theries and applicatins. Prvide the class with an executive summary f yur presentatin. Other issues: It is yur respnsibility t bserve dates and deadlines and t take the initiative f setting up a meeting with the instructr, if necessary. Presentatins are subject t instructr and peer evaluatin. There is n predetermined frmat fr the presentatin. This unit prvides yu with a change t experiment with new appraches. Yu may decide t use r nt t use any supplementary material handed t yu by the instructr, if any. The fllwing criteria will be taken int cnsideratin in the evaluatin f yur presentatin.
