1 LB 386 Practicum Student Optins at the Rcky Muntain Student Media Crpratin The LB 386 Practicum is designed t give any Clrad State University student, regardless f his r her majr, an pprtunity t learn media methds and practices by wrking with the Rcky Muntain Student Media Crpratin. Students may earn ne t three credits, depending n the time spent. RMSMC media include the Cllegian, Cllege Avenue magazine, KCSU-FM, a 10,000-watt radi statin, CTV-11, a cablecast and webcast televisin news, infrmatin, and entertainment prgram, and FS Life, a medium targeted specifically t CSU faculty and staff. While students wh already wrk at the RMSMC are nt prhibited frm enrlling in LB 386, these students are expected t take n a new and expanded learning experience rather than simply receive credit fr their current experiences. All LB 386 students will reprt t and be evaluated by a RMSMC prfessinal staff member wh has extensive media experience. There are fur areas t cnsider fr the practicum: (1) Public Relatins; (2) Bradcast; (3) Publicatins; (4) New Media. 1. PUBLIC RELATIONS Public relatins specialists will wrk in ne r mre media areas. Specialists will identify public relatins and prmtins activities in cncert with a prfessinal adviser and student media head r manager, develp an actin plan, identify budgets, and assist with implementatin f activities, events, and prmtins. 2. BROADCAST (CTV 11 televisin and/r KCSU-FM radi) Assciate sprts prducers assist the student sprts prducer in a variety f duties, and will learn the techniques, planning, and prgram executin necessary t becme a televisin r web based sprts prducer. Assciate news prducers assist a student bradcast news prducer in a variety f duties and will learn the techniques, planning, and prgram executin necessary t becme a televisin r web-based sprts prducer. Televisin news reprters will actively train with experienced staff t learn the fundamental methds and prcesses invlved in reprting televisin news. The successful candidate will learn vide acquisitin, editing in Final Cut Pr, prfessinal n-air cntent techniques and practices, and will prduce at least ne news package suitable fr bradcast r nline airing. 2 Radi news reprters will actively train with experienced staff t learn the fundamental methds and prcesses invlved in assignment, news gathering, and airing radi news and public affairs prgramming. The successful candidate will learn acquisitin techniques, editing in prfessinal news sftware, and the fundamentals f prfessinal n-air cntent delivery and techniques. The successful student will prduce at least ne news package suitable fr bradcasting n KCSU-FM as well as nline reprting. Advanced students will be equipped fr backpack jurnalism prductin with specific emphasis n breaking news as part f a multi-disciplinary media team f student jurnalists. Crprate and gvernmental vide prductin assistants will be trained in the fundamentals f crprate vide n behalf f an actual client. Training and hands-n experience will include client cntacts with emphasis n excellent client relatins, scripting, scene and sequence shting, studi wrk as apprpriate, and pst-prductin. The successful student shuld be able t successfully sht and edit vide and understand the principles f client relatinships. Videgraphers will learn t use ENG camera equipment fr acquisitin f vide fr news and ther televisin prductins. Thrughut the semester the videgrapher will learn the fundamental techniques f vide acquisitin, sequencing, and editing in Final Cut Pr sftware. PUBLICATIONS (Cllegian, Cllege Avenue magazine, and FS Life) Phtjurnalists are primarily phtgraphers but may als sht and edit vide. The phtjurnalist cvers assignments as well as generates enterprise feature and news phts independently. While sme ffice cameras are available, the student phtjurnalist is expected t have access t a digital camera capable f prviding publicatin quality images. Reprters will cver assigned news and feature stries as well as submitting enterprise cntributins fr the rganizatin s published media and websites, including the Cllegian, Cllege Avenue, and FS Life. While sme training in basic jurnalistic methds and practices is available, the ideal applicants will have media r academic experience (high schl, cllege, r prfessinal) in jurnalistic basics. Editrial designers will receive training in design fr published and digital media. Upn satisfactry cmpletin f training and a demnstrated aptitude fr design, the student will have numerus pprtunities fr editrial design wrk t enhance the student s prtfli and experience. Advertising design applicants shuld have an aptitude and sme experience in designing advertising r in graphic design. Sftware training, as apprpriate, will include Multi-Ad Creatr, Adbe In-Design, and

3 related sftware. At the cmpletin f the semester the successful student will have designed advertisements fr publicatin and fr use n the web. 4. NEW MEDIA New media cntent prviders will learn a wide variety f new media techniques and prgrams, including blgging, mnitring user-generated cntent, and apprpriate sftware prgrams. 4 LB 386, Student Media Practicum ASSIGNMENTS Assignment dates will be available n RamCT ASSIGNMENT NO. 1: BACKGROUND REPORT A brief, typed reprt that includes (be sure t answer all five pints; please write ne t three pages): 1. A brief histry, explaining wnership, funding, and the impact f this rganizatin n the cmmunity. 2. A descriptin f the staff, departments, and yur supervisr's respnsibilities. 3. A descriptin f yur respnsibilities. Tell me when yu began and what hurs yu are wrking. 4. Describe the audience yur rganizatin addresses. 5. Describe the management style f yur rganizatin. Purpse: t help yu understand the rganizatin and t see hw yur wrk is a part f the cmmunicatin prcess in the cmmunity. ASSIGNMENT NO. 2: JOURNAL REPORTS Yu must turn in a jurnal reprt. Yur supervisr must sign the reprt. Jurnals include hurs wrked and specific wrk yu have been assigned t d. Purpse: This is t help yu see hw yur practicum is prgressing and t help keep track f yur hurs and yur specific respnsibilities at yur practicum. ASSIGNMENT NO. 3: FINAL REPORT Write an assessment f yur practicum and include samples f yur best wrk. Include gd pints as well as areas where yu think imprvements can be made fr future practicums. Limit yur final reprt t ne t three pages. Submit a sample f yur best wrk cmpleted during this practicum. Depending upn yur practicum wrk, this might be a brchure, business plan, Web page, clips, TV script, tape, r any ther cmpleted wrk. Purpse: Yur wn assessment f yur wrk is valuable t yu. Yur assessment f the practicum helps us evaluate this pprtunity fr ther students. Wrk samples will be useful fr yur prtfli when yu begin jb hunting. ASSIGNMENT NO. 4: EVALUATION Tward the end f yur practicum, yur supervisr will be ed a final evaluatin frm that is t be returned t Kim Spencer befre yu can be given a grade. It is yur respnsibility t see that he/she returns the cmpleted evaluatin n time t CSU. Even if yu wrk beynd the deadline, the final evaluatin is still due n this date. Missing evaluatins result in an "Incmplete" fr the curse.

5 YOUR GRADE: Yu will receive a letter grade fr this curse. Yur letter grade will be determined by yur supervisr evaluatins, which will be cnverted t a letter grade, cupled with the penalties utlined fr missing, late, r prly cmpleted assignments.
