1 A Letter From OUR Founders In planning our 10th annual Great Chefs Event, we can t help but reminisce about all of the highlights from past years. It s unbelievable that what began as a small gathering of industry friends is now an incredible event that showcases the country s best culinary talents. But, some things never change and, for us, that s the essence of what this event is about: enjoying great food, drink and each other s company while making a significant difference in the lives of the many children served by Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation and the Vetri Foundation for Children. Although we can recall many of the amazing dishes that have been served in years past, what we really remember is the generosity of the chefs and sponsors who have supported this event. You do it for the same reasons we do, because we are all inspired by the perseverance of Liz and Jay Scott and the way they ve honored their daughter Alex s dream and because we all believe that every child deserves the opportunity to eat and live healthily. On Tuesday, June 9, we are set to host more than 40 of the country s best chefs, a variety of award-winning winemakers, brewers and bartenders, while auctioning off fabulous items and culinary adventures, at the beautiful Urban Outfitters, Inc. s corporate campus in Philadelphia s Navy Yard. As we continue through the planning process of the 10th annual Great Chefs Event it is with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. 4 About the Great Chefs Event & Beneficiaries The Great Chefs Event began in 2005 by partners Marc Vetri and Jeff Benjamin to benefit Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a local non-profit that raises funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. In 2008, Vetri and Benjamin founded the Vetri Foundation for Children, which helps provide healthy food and nutrition education to Philadelphia youth. Today, the event is a dual fundraiser for the two foundations, raising more than $750,000 in Now in its 10th year, the event brings dozens of high-profile chefs from across the country and around the world to the unique space of Urban Outfitters, Inc. s corporate campus in Philadelphia for an evening of fun, food and charity. This year, the event is on Tuesday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. More than 1,200 people are expected to attend. Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra Alex Scott ( ). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $100 million toward fulfilling Alex s dream of finding a cure, funding over 475 pediatric cancer research projects nationally. The Vetri Foundation for Children was founded in 2008 by chef Marc Vetri and restauranteur Jeff Benjamin to help kids experience the connection between healthy eating and healthy living. The Foundation s signature Eatiquette program bring highly trained chefs to schools to help them prepare fresh, scratch-cooked lunches that are served family style. Students learn the benefits of healthy eating and practice teamwork, communication, etiquette and portion control. Eatiquette is active in 11 Philadelphia area schools and two summer camps, serving more than 4,500 students. After-school and classroom-based cooking classes reinforce the lunchroom experience and give students the skills to take the recipes they love from the cafeteria home and share them with their families.
