TEAM CAPTAIN INFORMATION
TEAM CAPTAIN INFO PACKET Everything you need to lead your Team to a fundraising victory! Date & Time: Saturday, September 12, pm Registration & Party Begins 5pm Walk/Run 5:30 pm After Party Awards Silent Auction Attendance & Results: Format: 2014 Results Amount raised: $137, registered walkers and runners 2015 goal: $200,000 & 1,000 walkers/runners/revelers A 2 mile walk/run tour of Tulane University s beautiful Uptown campus ending in an after party in Tulane s Gibson Quad. About : We have a world class treatment program in prostate cancer at Tulane. We literally treat thousands of prostate cancer patients in our clinics and are by far the largest treatment center for such patients in Louisiana. In addition to patients from Louisiana, we have had prostate cancer patient referrals from 26 additional states and 5 countries outside the USA. Between , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved 6 new drugs for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Tulane played a role in the development of four of these. Where the Money Goes: Every dollar raised via the Nola Bluedoo Walk/Run goes to support ongoing basic and clinical research into prostate cancer at Tulane.
CREATE YOUR TEAM, SET GOALS, AND RECRUIT MEMBERS: Decide on a team name and direct team members to include the team name under Group Name when they register to participate in the race. Send each team member the link to register for the walk/run: (click on Register to Walk/Run at the top of the home page). All registered team members will receive a t shirt! Use the enclosed team sign up sheet to recruit your team members. Display the sign up sheet in a convenient location to build your team. And remember, family and friends across the country can join your team by helping you meet your Team fundraising goal! Set your team s fundraising goal and write it on the sticker located on the front left pocket of this folder, and then GO FOR IT! GET CREATIVE: Hold a team meeting to decide on costumes, outfits or to create signs to carry at the event. A variety of team prizes will be distributed on Race Day! Create a special fundraising event, such as a car wash, bake sale, guest bartending night, etc. to add to your team s total. Use the enclosed I Got My Blue On cards to fundraise at the office or other setting. For a set contribution ($1, $2, $5, etc.), donors can write their names or messages to loved ones on the cards, which can then displayed. Supply team members with NOLA Bluedoo envelopes and other information so that they can help meet your Team s fundraising goal. COLLECT DONATIONS: Team donations must be collected in advance. Encourage supporters to pay in advance by check (made payable to Tulane Cancer Center) or via credit card online at. PRE EVENT REGISTRATION: Set a date for all of your team members donations to be turned in to you so that you can bring them to pre event registration. At pre event registration you can turn in your team s donations and pick up each team member s registration packets so they can skip the registration line at the event. Pre registration will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015, in Tulane University s Gibson Quad. If you can t make that date, please contact Ruth Avila to make other pre event registration arrangements. TEAM CAPTAIN HOTLINE: (504) or bluedooteams@gmail.com
Sell your I Got My Blue On cards and display them in honor of a supporter or survivor or in memory of a loved one. Be a guest bartender at a local bar/restaurant and put tips toward your fundraising goal. Game Night: organize a night of board games, card games or party activities and ask friends to put some money on it for a good cause! everyone you know from 5 miles away to 5000! Collect spare change. Place a large plastic bottle at your office, a coffee shop, or restaurant. Turn those nickels and dimes into prostate cancer research and awareness! Do a Mailing: people still like to get letters in the mail. Tell them why you re walking and include a selfaddressed stamped envelope for their donation. Karaoke: find a karaoke night and have friends pledge to make a donation when you or a team member sings. The person that is put up to sing can always counter offer and donate more money NOT to sing! (if you ve got a lot of friends who should never, ever sing, how about an anti karaoke party?) Wine and Cheese Tasting: for those teams over 21, have your team over and invite all their friends. Open a few choice bottles, select some scrumptious cheeses from around the world, and ask for donations. Give Something Up: identify one costly habit, such as your morning coffee break or weekly manicure. Use the money you save to contribute to your own Walk Envelope. Blue Ribbon Day: have everyone wear a blue ribbon to promote Prostate Cancer Awareness and give a donation. Remember, this is a great cause and there will be prizes!
COSTUME! In an effort to continue the tradition of the NOLA Bluedoo Walk/Run/Party being a fun and festive event, teams are encouraged costume! Teams may choose to costume in blue the color of prostate cancer awareness or in some other theme! Prizes will be awarded at the event for best team and individual costumes! NETWORK! Begin networking with members of your community, co workers, family, friends and classmates. Reach out to local businesses, schools, community and religious organizations, recreational facilities, clubs, sports teams, etc., and encourage them to help support the cause by joining or supporting your team. Be prepared to provide event information, registration forms, and Walk envelopes. Publicize! Put up posters, team flyers, envelopes and other Nola Bluedoo Walk/Run materials in visible, busy spots. Ideas include coffee shops, cafeterias, meeting rooms, community bulletin boards, and entryways. Be sure to obtain permission from the manager or building supervisor first. Set up a table complete with Walk envelopes, team registration forms and other materials. Talk to your employer/school about sending an to company employees/students, writing an article for your newsletter, or setting up a link to the event s home page on your employer s website. SET GOALS! Set team goals for the number of teammates and amount of money to be raised. Send out s and distribute memos, newsletters and articles to your targeted audience describing your team s goals. Follow up with reports on your progress. Offer incentives or challenge another team to increase participation. RAISE MONEY! Contact potential supporters. Inform them of your goals and direct them to for information or to donate. CELEBRATE! Organize pre and post Nola Bluedoo Walk/Run parties and activities. Generate enthusiasm and team spirit among your teammates. Be creative and make the NOLA Bluedoo Walk/Run experience as much fun as possible for your team. This will encourage teammates to work harder at recruiting and fundraising. Make the NOLA Bluedoo Walk/Run a yearly tradition!
Teams who raise $1,000 or more will become members of the BLUEDOO KREWE! We created the BLUEDOO KREWE to acknowledge our top fundraisers. 7 About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. About 1 man in 36 will die of prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society s estimates : About 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2015 About 27,540 men will die of prostate cancer this year Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66. Prostate cancer occurs more often in African American men and Caribbean men of African ancestry than in men of other races. African American men are also more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage, and are more than twice as likely to die of prostate cancer as Caucasian men. Prostate cancer occurs less often in Asian American and Hispanic/Latino men than in non Hispanic whites. The reasons for these racial and ethnic differences are not clear. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man's risk of developing this disease. (The risk is higher for men who have a brother with the disease than for those with an affected father.) The risk is much higher for men with several affected relatives, particularly if their relatives were young at the time the cancer was found. The exact role of diet in prostate cancer is not clear, but several factors have been studied. Men who eat a lot of red meat or high fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer. These men also tend to eat fewer fruits and vegetables. Doctors are not sure which of these factors is responsible for raising the risk. * American Cancer Society,
