2 Dear Friends, Realizing that everyone has been touched by cancer, one way or another, the Concert for the Cure Foundation is committed to raising money for the American Cancer Society and serving young cancer survivors. In 2005, Gamma Chi Delta sorority at Trinity University founded Concert for the Cure, choosing the American Cancer Society as the benefactor of the event in honor of two current members of the sorority who had survived cancer themselves. Although those members have long since graduated, we continue to support the cause because cancer continues to touch the lives of friends and families throughout the country. Concert for the Cure has chosen for a significant portion of our donation to be applied directly to Camp Discovery, a weeklong summer camp sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Camp Discovery is open to children ranging in age from 7-16 who are currently diagnosed with or in remission from cancer. This camp is a truly remarkable experience for these young survivors; it provides them with a week to bond with peers and to experience just being a kid, rather than a kid with cancer. Our foundation's contribution helps finance the camp so that the American Cancer Society is able to provide this experience for the children at no cost to their families. The Concert for the Cure Foundation is a certified 50 I(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax deductible as allowed by federal law. In addition to helping this cause, you would also be gaining valuable publicity for your organization or company. 3 HISTORY Eli Young Band Led by the women of Gamma Chi Delta, Concert for Josh Abbott Band the Cure begin in 2005 in the gymnasium at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Then called Dance Roger Creager Marathon, the sorority established a goal of getting today's Kyle Park youth more involved in philanthropy. The proceeds were Reckless Kelly chosen to benefit the American Cancer Society to reflect the personal childhood cancer experiences of two current Aaron Einhouse members. For the first three years, Concert for the Cure succeeded as a campus wide fundraiser, donating $33,000 to the ACS and establishing the Concert for the Cure Foundation, a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit. By 2009, the event had grown large enough to move off campus and be open to the entire San Antonio community. In 2010, Concert for the Cure moved to the popular Cowboys Dancehall, a partnership that has launched the once minor fundraiser into a significant citywide annual event. Through this partnership with Cowboys, the Concert for the Cure Foundation and Gamma Chi Delta sorority have donated over $70,000 to the American Cancer Society's Camp Discovery, making a dramatic impact on the lives of the campers and volunteers. Concert for the Cure will return to Cowboys Dancehall on Saturday, January 26, 2013 to celebrate its eighth year of Texas Country and continue the mission of providing D o l l a r s hope for kids with cancer. 4 CAMP DISCOVERY Each summer, the American Cancer Society hosts Camp Discovery in Kerrville, Texas, where 150 children and 100 volunteers spend the week having the time of their lives. However, this is no ordinary camp. Each child from age 7-16 is a cancer survivor. Camp Discovery is a truly amazing place." -Amy Walton Under the expert care of pediatric oncologists and specially trained nurses, Camp Discovery gives kids with cancer the opportunity to spend a week with other young people who have shared similar experiences. Spending time with others in similar situations, allows these children the opportunity to build self-esteem and share many remakable relationships that will last a lifetime. While participating in activities such as fishing, horseback riding, whipped cream and jello wars, and a ropes course, they can spend a week just being a kid and not worrying about being the kid with cancer. Amy Walton, founder of the Concert for the Cure Foundation, attended this very special camp as a camper for 10 years following her diagnosis with leukemia, and now returns each summer as a volunteer counselor for girls ages As a camper, I learned to appreciate my cancer experience because it made me realize that I'm very fortunate to be in remission." Amy says one of her most touching moments at Camp Discovery was working with a young girl who was paralyzed from the waist down as a side effect of her treatment. This little girl comes to camp and has a fierce determination to participate in all of the activities. She plays tennis, teaches us all of her fun dance moves, and even pulled herself up the ropes course so she could fly down the zip line. She is absolutely unstoppable, and has a huge smile on her face the entire time. Camp Discovery helps her realize she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. "It's remarkable to see the tolerance and acceptance this group of children has for one another. It doesn t matter if you re bald, if you have scars, or if you are missing a limb; they honestly view each other as family and surround each other with love and support. -Amy Walton Camp Discovery is put on at no cost to the children or their families, which makes generous donors like you even more important. 100% of the proceeds from Concert for the Cure are given to the American Cancer Society, specifically to enrich young cancer patients lives by sending them to this special camp.
