1 Guidelines fr Receiving Internship Credit All Cnstructin Management Students updated: June 1, 2012 Internships are very imprtant ways fr students t gain experience while attending cllege. They can be rewarding and can lead t exciting careers. Real-wrld, practical experience can enrich an already tp-ntch curriculum. Key Facts f the Curse: Carries ne hur f upper-level academic credit. Enrllment requires cmpletin f Pre-Screening Frm and Learning Agreement. If yu d nt currently have an Internship site, Career and Testing Center will assist yu in the prcess. Fr the CMGT 4100, credit can be earned fr Internships under the fllwing cnditins: Guidelines fr Apprval: Students must attend an Orientatin prir t the internship. Credit is nt given fr general wrk experience. It must be an Internship-nt a jb. Duties and prject descriptins are required. The Internship must have a beginning, an end, and cncrete prfessinal develpment gals. The Internship shuld be a necessity fr entering a career field and a valuable experience. Students need a cumulative GPA f 2.0 r higher bth in and ut f majr. Students must cmplete a minimum f 90 academic credit hurs tward CM degree. Students must agree t wrk a minimum f 400 hurs during Internship. Students must apply and be apprved t participate in the Internship prgram with the Faculty Internship Crdinatr. Only ne Internship can apply tward yur degree plan. Hw t Register fr Class: All the necessary frms are available n the Cnstructin Management and Career and Testing Center websites. The fllwing pages further list all materials and frms that must be submitted t the Career and Testing Center and Faculty Internship Crdinatr befre yu can enrll in the curse. Page 1 f 11

2 Step 1. Befre yur internship begins: INTERNSHIP CHECKLIST Schedule and meet with the Faculty Internship Crdinatr. Attend and cmplete a mandatry Internship Orientatin. Review and cmplete the all frms required at the Internship Orientatin. Secure an Internship related t yur majr. Cmplete and return the Pre-Screening Frm and Learning Agreement fr CMGT Step 2. During yur internship placement: Keep yur weekly lg f yur wrk activities up t date. Be prepared t meet with the Faculty Internship Crdinatr as requested r needed. Peridically assess yur prgress in achieving learning bjectives. Be prepared t meet with yur emplyer as requested r as needed t discuss the internship. Step 3. At the cnclusin f yur internship placement: Meet with yur Faculty Internship Crdinatr at the clse f the experience. Attendance at class meetings during the semester. Within the guidelines and prvisins belw, the parties hereby agree t the fllwing: 1. Student Obligatins 1.1 Student shall attend a mandatry Internship Orientatin prir t enrllment fr academic credit. Student agrees t cmplete all frms required at the Orientatin. 1.2 Student must meet with the Faculty Internship Crdinatr nce Internship is secured. 1.3 Upn accepting an Internship, the student is expected t fulfill the wrk experience. This means cmpleting all reprts, prjects, and prpsals by the deadline given by Faculty Internship Crdinatr. 1.4 Please see attached General Guidelines fr class details fr student criteria and respnsibilities specific t this Internship prgram. 1.5 Student shuld be cvered by his/her wn insurance r by Emplyer s insurance. 1.6 Student agrees t the terms listed in the attached Student's Waiver f Liability. 1.7 Student agrees t cmplete a brief evaluatin at the cmpletin f the Internship. 2. Emplyer Obligatins 2.1 Emplyer shall prvide Student with a full-time supervisr wh will guide, mentr, mnitr, and advise Student thrughut the Internship prcess. 2.2 Emplyer is t prvide Student with real hands n career-related wrk experience and give training sufficient enugh s that Student has every pprtunity t successfully perfrm his/her duties. Please d nt expect Student t perfrm minr tasks r tasks thers wish t avid. 2.3 Supervisr will be expected t cmplete a brief evaluatin at the cmpletin f the Internship, which will be used t determine Student s final grade. 2.4 Supervisr shall agree t serve as a rle mdel and t cntribute his/her experience, knwledge, and leadership abilities t prvide Student with an imprtant practical learning experience. 5 2.5 Emplyer shall cmply with all federal and state emplyment, safety, and civil rights laws applicable t the psitin. 2.6 Emplyer agrees t the terms listed in the attached Emplyer's Waiver f Liability. 3. Faculty Internship Crdinatr Obligatins 3.1 Faculty Internship Crdinatr shall mnitr Student s prgress and assign a final grade fr the Internship. 3.2 Faculty Internship Crdinatr shall determine that Student meets all eligible criteria and that the Internship pprtunities prperly supplement Student s academic wrk. 3.3 Faculty Internship Crdinatr shall allw adequate ffice time t meet with Student fr guidance n assignments and prject. 4. Career and Testing Center Obligatins 4.1 Career Center Cnsultant shall assist students in lcating Internship pprtunities that prvide experience in career-related psitins t supplement their academic experience. 4.2 Career Center Cnsultant may visit Student s emplyment site. 6 Student's Waiver f Liability Lamar University des nt prvide health r liability insurance cverage fr Internship Students. If health and/r liability insurance cverage are required by the participating business it is the respnsibility f the student t prvide dcumentatin f cverage. 7 Intrductin LAMAR UNIVERISTY REESE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM CMGT 4100: CONSTRUCTION INTERNSHIP COURSE SYLLABUS An Internship is a planned academic-wrk experience in industry directly related t the student s area f cllege study. It is an excellent pprtunity fr students in the Reese Cnstructin Management Prgram t gain entry-level cmpetencies. It is als an pprtunity fr students t attach their field f study t a practical experience f their career interest in shrt term. Internships help students integrate what is taught in schl with what is required in the wrkplace. Students take internships t develp knwledge and skills valued by emplyers. At Lamar, every undergraduate student enrlled in the Reese Cnstructin Management Prgram must cmplete the CMGT 4100 Cnstructin Management Internship/Independent Study during any semester (Fall, Spring, and/r Summer). Successful cmpletin f ne semester lng internship accunts fr 1 credit hur. Curse Descriptin Prerequisites: Open nly t Cnstructin Management senir students wh have cmpleted 90 credit hurs and maintain a 2.0 GPA bth in and ut f the majr (r minr); scpe f internship requires pre-apprval and permissin. Strngly recmmend cmpletin during the summer preceding students' final semester r year. Descriptin: Fur hundred hurs f pre-planned, unique practicum that prvides knwledge and skills nt fund in the traditinal classrm setting. Special learning bjectives in ne f the fllwing is recmmended, but ther bjectives will be cnsidered: prject management, acquisitin and develpment f residential land, scheduling, cnstructin technlgy, field peratins, ffice peratins, building materials, estimating, finance, marketing, cnstructin management, and/r land use cdes and regulatins. A final reprt and ral presentatin are required under supervisin f an academic advisr. Curse Objectives Thrugh the successful cmpletin f this curse students shuld: Demnstrate apprpriate wrkplace behavir, such as punctuality, dependability, team wrk, prblem slving, etc. Demnstrate and apply knwledge f cnstructin management experience, skills and knwledge. Examine the cnstructin industry s planning, design, and field peratins, including the interrelatins amng the varius tasks and participants in the cnstructin prcess. Describe, explain, and evaluate the intern, the placement rganizatin, and the entire internship experience. ACCE Requirements: 4. Cnstructin Science, and 5. 8 General Lamar University Internship Requirements The Career and Testing Center f Lamar University prvides prgram supprt t students during the internship prcess. The fllwing requirements must be accmplished by the student thrugh that Center: Attend a mandatry Internship Orientatin cnducted by the Career and Testing Center. Cmplete the Career and Testing Center's Internship Orientatin and all required frms prir t the internship. Secure an Internship related t yur majr. Cmplete and return the Career and Testing Center's Pre-Screening Frm and Learning Agreement fr CMGT Ensure yur emplyer cmpletes the nline emplyer evaluatin f yur Internship. Cmplete the nline student evaluatin f yur Internship. Expected Wrk Requirements Learning bjectives in ne r mre f the fllwing is recmmended: prject management, acquisitin and develpment f residential land, scheduling, cnstructin technlgy, field peratins, ffice peratins, building materials, estimating, finance, marketing, cnstructin management, and/r land use cdes and regulatins. The fllwing tasks are typical f thse expected by the Cnstructin Management Prgram at Lamar t receive academic credit fr the internship. Preparing quantity take-ff's, calling vendrs and subcntractrs fr prpsals. Assisting with prject recrd keeping, preparing shp drawings, and assisting with cst cntrl recrds. Assisting with safety inspectins, lgging and prcessing submittals. Assisting with cst cntrl, inventry cntrl, schedule checking, subcntractr mnitring, and prblem reslving. Assisting prject managers and superintendents at as high a respnsibility level as pssible. Crdinating and inspecting subcntractr activities, verifying wrk and recmmending prgress payments. Planning and scheduling, prcessing change and extra wrk rders, preparing requests fr prgress payment. Obtaining permits and licenses, checking zning and cde requirements, designing temprary facilities. Arranging fr utility services, cnducting safety inspectins and training, supervise punch list activities. Expediting material deliveries, assisting in dcumenting and preparing claims. Preparing charts and frmal reprts. Wrking as a helper, clerk, r assistant, in the ffice r in the field. General Academic Requirements General academic requirements n the student include: Must be a Reese Cnstructin Management Prgram majr. Must maintain a 2.0 grade pint average (GPA) in verall curse wrk as well as in all cnstructin management curses. Must register fr cllege credit after accepting internship. Maintain cpies f all dcumentatin pertaining t their internship until they have successfully received credit fr a cmpleted internship. Students are required t find their wn internship; the financial terms f the internship are between the student and the emplyer. Hwever, the wrk perfrmed by the student shuld be cnsistent with the "Expected Wrk Requirements" delineated abve. Page 8 f 11

9 The student is respnsible t ensure the adequacy f his/her insurance cverage during the internship perid. Lamar University des nt insure internship activity. Statutry Wrker s Cmpensatin and general liability plicies ffered by emplying cmpanies typically cver emplyees fr jb-related injuries. (Be sure t check with the emplyer.) Fr health insurance, the student wuld nrmally be cvered under their parent s plicy r a separate plicy purchased by the student (check with Student Services); health insurance cverage by the internship emplyer is nrmally nt available fr shrt-term emplyees. Hwever, visit with the internship emplyer abut this issue. CMGT 4100, Cnstructin Management Internship/Independent Study, is a graded curse that will be evaluated using the fllwing criteria: 20% f grade will be measured frm the General Wrkplace Behavir submitted by yur emplyer. 80% f grade will be measured by the quality and cntent f yur Student Self-Reprt. Internship Assessment Reprts Attendance Emplyer Evaluatin Student Self-Reprt Daily Lg and Daily Lg f Hurs Student Evaluatin Survey (nline) Prject Summary Reprt Ttal 5 Pints 15 Pints 15 Pints 5 Pints 55 Pints 100 Pints Internship Assessment Reprts: Each student must submit the fllwing Internship Assessments. These Assessments must be cmpleted by each student, and signed by the Faculty Internship Crdinatr. The assessment als serves as verificatin f the 400 hurs f wrk cmpleted. Prf f 400 hurs cmpleted must be submitted befre a grade can be given. N grade will be psted until the Internship Assessments are received. Attendance: There are three cmpnents t the Attendance grade. 1. Attendance at the Career and Testing Center's Internship Orientatin; 2. Attendance in the Internship class; and 3. Submit a cpy f the emplyer required time sheets. (Als, please reprt t wrk accrding t the requirements f the wrk schedule assigned by the emplyer, and cnfrm t thse attendance plicies.) Emplyer Evaluatin: Emplyers shall cmplete an Emplyer Evaluatin fr each student, summarizing the student's internship wrk experience. The evaluatin is ed t the emplyer by the Career and Testing Center. Student Self-Reprt: Daily Lg and Daily Lg f Hurs: Students are expected t cmplete a daily reprt f wrk activities and t reflect n their imprtance t learning. The Daily Lg shuld take just a few minutes t cmplete each day. It shuld be bth a recrd f each day's activities and a reflectin f thse activities n what yu learned, especially in light f the questins and statements belw. The reflectins will help yu develp a self-evaluatin paper. Each day must include (1) the day wrked number, beginning with the number ne, (2) the date wrked, and (3) a lg f hurs n the jb that day, the ttal f all hurs wrked must be 400 hurs r mre. Page 9 f 11

What did yu learn abut yurself yur interests, aptitudes, strengths, and weaknesses? 2. Describe the technlgy r equipment yu used r bserved being used. 3. Give specific examples f mathematics r science cncepts and skills yu used r bserved. 4. Give an example f ral r written cmmunicatin yu used r bserved being used. 5. Describe a wrk activity yu perfrmed and the prcedures yu fllwed. 6. Describe special instructins yu received frm yur mentr r anther emplyee. 7. Describe any materials yu had t read and interpret t cmplete an assigned wrk activity. 8. Describe any initiative yu tk t learn smething new. 9. List a prblem yu slved r bserved being slved, and tell hw yu r thers arrived at a slutin. 10. Describe a meeting yu attended, and list the decisins made r actins taken. What cntributins did yu make t the meeting? What happened as a result f the meeting? 11. List smething new yu learned abut the cmpany and its pprtunities fr emplyees. Student Evaluatin Survey: Cmplete the nline survey available at the Career and Testing Center's Website. Prject Summary Reprt: Each student shall submit a paper that critically analyzes the internship experience, and neatly and carefully written using a wrd prcessr. The paper must be a summary f the wrk cnducted during the internship, and include a self-assessment f the entire internship experience. It is the single mst imprtant cmpnent in the grade fr this curse, and, therefre, must be a 4000-level paper that will be graded fr cntent, clarity and frm using the rubric cntained in the Appendix f this dcument. Submissin shuld meet the deadline specified by the Faculty Internship Crdinatr. Page 10 f 11

11 Yur paper must include the fllwing elements: CMGT 4100: Cnstructin Internship Prject Summary Reprt Rubric (10%) Frmat and Cver Page Cver Page t include: Name, Date, Internship Supervisr, Psitin, Internship Cmpany Name and Address, Perid f Internship (frm date t date), Writing Frmat Style: either APA r MLA, with the exceptins listed belw. Written at the 4000-level accrding t cntent and clarity. Paper is fully 14 pages lng, n mre, n less; duble-spaced, with ne (1) inch margins. Fnts: Main Title: Arial 14 size, bld; sub-titles: Arial 12 size, bld; Bdy: Times New Rman 11 size fnt. Clearly divide paper int sectin belw, with sub-titles. Include page numbers at the bttm f each page. Images are encuraged, but nt required. Images d nt cunt twards verall page length. (10%) Intrductin (ne r tw paragraphs) Clearly and cmpletely summarized what yu expected t learn during the summer, i.e. yur learning gals. Clearly and cmpletely summarized the duties and tasks were yu assigned. Describe prducts, if any, that yu prduced during the internship. Clearly and cmpletely rate yur perfrmance n these tasks, explain why yu rated yur perfrmance as such. (10%) Descriptin f Relatinships (tw t three paragraphs) Describe yur supervisry relatinship (e.g., psitive, helpful, etc.) and tell why. Describe ther imprtant relatinships and tell why they were imprtant (chse nly the mst imprtant nes). Clearly and cmpletely describe the mst helpful/influential persn yu wrked with at this cmpany? Write her/him a thank yu nte and include it in this reprt! Analyze the leadership styles yu bserved and used during yur internship. (10%) Evaluatin f Wrk Place (three r mre paragraphs) Evaluate the strengths f c-wrkers during the internship in terms f ability t learn, attitude, dependability, leadership, initiative, judgment, prblem slving, relatinships with thers, quality f wrk, planning, etc. Describe and evaluate the benefits and weaknesses f this wrk place fr yu and thers future students. Explain ne thing that may need t be changed abut the internship. Explain the imprtance f this change. (20%) Evaluatin f Learning Objectives (five r mre paragraphs) Explain anything that yu wish yu had knwn prir t beginning yur internship. In terms f yur learning bjectives, clearly and cmpletely discuss hw the internship was helpful; hw it was influential; and what yu learned. Clearly and cmpletely discuss hw the internship integrated curse material learned in the CM Degree Prgram. Address these statements: Describe what yu see is the mst imprtant part f being a cnstructin manager. Describe yur strengths (ability t learn, attitude, dependability, leadership, initiative, judgment, prblem slving, relatinships with thers, quality f wrk, planning, etc.) Discuss that part f yur internship jb where yu were mst effective; Discuss that part where yu were mst trubled r where yu need further grwth and imprvement. (15%) Evaluatin f Career and Life Grwth (three r mre paragraphs) Analyze, carefully, hw the internship experience related t yur previusly expressed career interests. State hw the internship experience advanced (r nt) yur career and life grwth. Analyze the internship experience fr verall relevance in yur life. (10%) Cnclusin (tw r three paragraphs) Summarize yur experience. Incrprate hw yur educatin has r has nt cntributed t yu internship experience and vice versa. Rate and explain yur internship using ne f the fllwing: Excellent, Abve Average, Average, r Belw Average. Incrprate yur thughts n hw the internship has r has nt helped yu define a career path. Include any final thughts n yur internship experience. (15%) Writing Effrt and Style: Fllwed directins and answered the assigned questin r statement? Used paraphrasing and student's wrding nly; n qutatins? Indicates riginal, independent, believable, meaningful experience f the material? Avided spelling and grammatical errrs?
