Magazines include Inc., Success, Entrepreneur, Fast Cmpany, Wired, Atlanta Business Chrnicle, and Harvard Business Review. Curse Objectives 1. The bjectives will be accmplished thrugh lectures, student grup activities, guest speakers, case studies, and actual small business analysis. Peer review is part f the grades prcess. Part f yur assignments will be affected by the peer reviews cnducted by each team member. This prcess will be explained in mre detail in a separate hand ut, later in the curse. As a senir-level curse, the cmmunicatin skills yu have cultivated thus far shuld be evident in every written assignment and every verbal exchange. Successful cmmunicatin will affect yur grade. Pp Quizzes: Pp quizzes will be given during class thrughut the curse f the semester. If yu arrive late r leave early, yu risk missing a quiz. The quizzes may cver cncepts frm readings fr that day, speaker presentatins frm previus days and details f the scheduled cases. Each will vary in frmat and length. Mst quizzes are designed t check whether yu have read and understd the text and materials. Sme quizzes will evaluate bth yur ability t apply the cncepts f entrepreneurship t actual situatins, and thers will ask yu fr feedback n past classes and guest lectures. Anyne absent fr a quiz will earn a zer fr that quiz. N make-ups will be given. In cmputing the final grade, the lwest grade will be drpped. Small Business Issue Analysis The class will frm teams t act as a cnsulting firm whse interest is helping small businesses t increase their perfrmance in all areas f the business (i.e. human resurces, marketing, financial, prductivity). Each student cnsulting firm will chse an existing small business fr analysis. The cnsultants will wrk with the business wners and managers t chse a prblem r issue currently plaguing the cmpany. The cnsultants will use their expertise and intelligence t wrk with their client in finding a slutin and feasible implementatin plan. The utputs frm the engagement will be a ten minute presentatin and typewritten reprt that will be presented t the class and the client. The class des nt need cpies f the reprt. MGS Fall 2007

3 Yur team will receive a grade n the presentatin and the reprt. Each cnsulting team will be evaluated n their ability t identify the prblems causing the issue, the underlying causes f the prblem, the slutins t the prblems, and an effective implementatin plan fr making the change. The implementatin plan will als include measurements fr ensuring success. We will spend a large amunt f class time t discuss and develp specific slutins fr yur clients. Ptential slutins include: Overall Cmpany Develpment / Grwth Plan Overall Crprate Plan Marketing Plan Financial Plan Client Fullfillment Plan Lead Cnversin Plan Lead Generatin Plan Nrmally, strategies and slutins t yur clients fall within this framewrk. Hwever, we can develp plans that fcus n ther unique strategies and factrs. Mre specific infrmatin will be prvided in class. Business Mdel / Strategy Reprt A business mdel is a way f ding business. A strategy represents the way in which entrepreneurs achieve their visin. The ptential t make a visin int reality will be dependent n the pssibility f creating a strategy t deliver it. Yur team will develp an analysis f an existing business mdel and present these findings t the class. Yu will receive mre detailed infrmatin n hw t accmplish this. Small Business Tpic Presentatin Each team will select a tpic which wuld be f interest t smene running r wrking fr a small business. The tpic must be apprved by the instructr. Each team will present their findings t the class in an educatin presentatin f n lnger than five minutes. The teams will als prvide a ne-page summary f the significant take-aways frm their research. Class Participatin/Cntributin: In the crprate wrld, emplyees are expected t have well-develped cmmunicatin skills, bth written and ral. In an entrepreneurial firm, these skills are perhaps even mre imprtant as the entrepreneur is respnsible fr prmting the business and presenting the business idea t ptential investrs, mtivating emplyees t supprt his/her visin, and cnvincing custmers f the value f the venture. As ne bjective f this curse is t help prepare yu fr life as an entrepreneur, where yu will ftentimes be evaluated as much n the basis f yur character as yu are n the basis f yur ability, yur prfessinalism demnstrated during class will cmprise a substantial prtin f yur grade.
