1 MERCY HEALTH POSITION DESCRIPTION Director of Pharmacy Mercy Values: Compassion, Hospitality, Respect, Innovation, Stewardship, Teamwork Position title: Director of Pharmacy Employee name: Entity/Group: Business Unit/Department: Mercy Public Hospitals Inc (MPHI) Pharmacy Date: November 2013 Position reports to: Program Director Ambulatory, Allied Health & Community Services Positions reporting to this one: Pharmacy Staff: Clinical and non-clinical Position Purpose: Responsible for planning, delivery and evaluation of safe, high quality pharmacy services across MPHI Responsible for all aspects of distribution, storage and usage of pharmaceuticals within Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) Responsible for supporting the Pharmacy Manager, Werribee Mercy Hospital in the planning and organising of pharmacy policies and procedure within that entity Any other duties as directed Qualifications: Pharmacist, with current registration in Australia, with several years experience of hospital pharmacy Post-graduate qualification (or working towards) in pharmacy or management Resource management: Total staff management (FTE): Annual Operating Expenditure: Annual Capital Expenditure:

3 improvement Communicates openly and honestly as an effective team member Responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating Pharmacy services across MPHI Be responsible for the development of appropriate systems for the most efficient distribution and storage of drugs and provision of information to ensure their optimal usage develops a forward plan for ongoing development of the pharmacy service at both sites ensure operational efficiency and high quality care is delivered at both sites in collaboration with the WMH Pharmacy site manager Annual plans for pharmacy developed and implemented Ensures effective lines of communication are maintained both internally and externally Effectively manage financial resources Establish effective and appropriate patterns of communication with clients, families, colleagues and management Ensure staff behave in accordance with Mercy values at all times and resolve conflict as required Develop an annual budget for MHW pharmacy In collaboration with the Pharmacy site Manager at WMH develop an annual budget for WMH Pharmacy Directly monitor the budget at both sites Inform Finance Department of any aberrant costs as soon as possible Proactively develop business cases to support service delivery in the area of responsibility Evidence f effective communication processes and staff feedback as per annual performance review Well informed staff working in a harmonious environment Both Pharmacy Departments operate within budget Key variances explained Business cases developed as appropriate

4 Oversees the recruitment of appropriately trained staff for all vacancies Ensures the provision of suitable orientation to the department(s) and hospital(s) Support staff in their ongoing professional development and completes Professional Development Reviews annually for all staff Responsible for the appointment, training and development of all Pharmacy staff. Staff available to provide services consistent with the aims of the department Orientation to department provided within 5 days of commencement PDRs carried out each year Ensures as far as possible that all statutes pertaining to pharmacy and drug use are complied with. Ensures responsibility for own professional development and encourages the pharmacy staff to meet their obligations in this regard. Actively leads a culture of continuous quality improvement and risk management within Pharmacy services across MPHI. Ensures that poison s plans are developed at both hospitals to ensure safe, secure and legal storage and usage of drugs throughout the hospital(s) Facilitates the monitoring of certain drugs from time to time to ensure appropriate usage Keeps abreast of current pharmacy issues Completes at least the minimum continuing education requirements of AHPRA Provides information on educational opportunities for pharmacy staff Provides financial assistance for staff to attend conferences/ educational opportunities Facilitates the provision in-service education programs for medical, nursing, allied health & pharmacy staff when necessary Understands and applies continuous quality improvement methods in the work area Poisons plan developed and approved by drugs and Poisons Ongoing monitoring of drugs subject to abuse Clinical and theoretical knowledge up to date Documented completion of minimum CE requirements Evidence of pharmacy staff completing minimum CE requirements Record of education provided Annual quality plan for the area Risk is identified, mitigated and managed through existing systems and staff education

5 Understands and applies principles of accreditation and leads the relevant standards across MPHI Educates and supports staff understand continuous improvement as it relates to risk management in the area of assigned responsibility Incidents are thoroughly investigated and corrective actions implemented t prevent recurrence Leadership of Organizational compliance with Standard 10 medication management Encourages research into aspects of the pharmacy service or on drug usage. Provide so far as is practicable, a healthy and safe environment for staff and others in the workplace and actively review work procedures and supervise staff to ensure all work is performed in a safe manner.
