The registered Nurse demonstrates competence in the provision of quality nursing care to people of all ages and cultural groups and assumes responsibility for the nursing plan of care, has the authority to make and is held accountable for patient care, management decisions specific to assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the plan. Organisation Overview: West Gippsland Healthcare Group is a sub-regional public hospital providing 77 Hospital and 110 Aged Care beds. We provide acute medical and surgical, paediatric, obstetrics & gynaecology, emergency, aged care and community services, primarily in the Shire of Baw Baw, approximately 100 kms east of Melbourne. West Gippsland Healthcare Group comprises a number of sites. They are Baw Baw Health and Community Care Centre in Drouin, Community Services Centres in Warragul and Trafalgar, Rawson Community Health Centre, Cooinda Lodge Aged Care Residence, Andrews House Aged Care Residence, Warragul Linen Service and West Gippsland Hospital. Organisational Structure: The Registered Nurse will report to the Nurse Unit Manager via the Associate Nurse Manager. Direct reporting line: Chief Executive Officer WGHG Director of Nursing & Midwifery Nurse Unit Manager Associate Nurse Unit Manager Nurses Ward Clerks Qualifications/Experience: Mandatory: Desirable: Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA. Recent Emergency Nursing experience. Certificate in Emergency Nursing or other relevant to the ED setting or working towards similar highly regarded. Key Selection Criteria: Key Competencies: Demonstrated sound level of nursing skills and works within safe practice principles. Commitment to flexibility and innovation in practice including an evidence-based approach to care Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and problem solving skills. Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Professional Practice Demonstrates practice within the Vision, Mission and Values of West Gippsland Healthcare Group and according to the intent and standards prescribed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council. Function in accordance with legislation, conducting practice within a professional and ethical framework to deliver accountable care that protects the rights of individuals and groups. Ensure all patients, residents, clients, visitors and staff are treated with respect, dignity and courtesy in an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to achieve desired health outcomes for patients, residents and clients. Mentor or preceptor staff as directed by the Nurse Unit Manager or delegate. Act as a resource for Graduate Nurses, other Grade 2 Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and casual nursing staff. Assume rotation into senior roles when delegated or required to do so, based on the level of educational preparation and competence. Ensure that optimal efficiency is achieved and quality of care is maintained. Consider the costs and budget implications in relation to work practices and consumables related to patient and resident care. Demonstrate a commitment to organisational change. Assume accountability and responsibility for providing a high standard of direct patient, resident and client care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of outcomes. Accept accountability for own actions and seek guidance from senior nursing staff when limited by own level of expertise. Page 3 of 8

4 Practice within policy and procedural guidelines. Respond to clinical changes in the patient, resident and client s condition and initiate consultation with relevant medical/nursing and multi-disciplinary team as required. Accurately document in accordance with West Gippsland Healthcare Group guidelines. Supervise and direct the clinical practice of other staff as required. Ensure all incidents are accurately documented and investigated at the time of an incident and the Nurse Unit Manager or delegate is informed. Human Resource Management Demonstrates application of knowledge to support quality health care, a competent workforce and a satisfactory work environment for staff. Assist the Nurse Unit Manager to establish and maintain effective communication systems within the clinical specialty. Assist with monitoring workloads to ensure appropriate staff and skill mix. Act responsibly in relation to rostering practices. Comply with all West Gippsland Healthcare Group policy including but not limited to Code of Conduct, uniform and punctuality. Act to ensure Annual Leave and ADO liability comply with West Gippsland Healthcare Group policy. Promote and support the mandatory competency framework for Nursing Services and your ward/department, ensuring compliance issues are addressed within an agreed timeframe. Demonstrate an ability to resolve conflict. Promote and maintain an environment of teamwork and professionalism. Business Management Demonstrates leadership and application of knowledge to operate within the agreed nursing budget for the clinical unit and the organisation s Financial Management framework. Support the core business of the ward/department and Nursing Services. Work within the Delegations of Authority consistent with the role. Clinical Governance Assist the Nurse Unit Manager/delegate to monitor standards of professional practice and service delivery through West Gippsland Healthcare Group Quality Framework to Page 4 of 8

5 ensure all patients, residents and clients receive clinical treatment that is appropriate for their condition and based on currently available best practice. Contribute to the implementation and achievement of activities identified in the ward/departments annual business plan. Identify areas of nursing practice where improvement can be made to the quality of patient, resident and client care. Support and actively participate in quality improvement activities. Represent the ward/department on nominated committees, working groups and projects as designated by the Nurse Unit Manager/delegate ensuring information is shared with the team. Comply with West Gippsland Healthcare Group Risk Management framework. Identify clinical risk through incident reporting and analysis and record review. Assist the Nurse Unit Manager/delegate to objectively investigate complaints with point of service resolution and implementation of strategies to prevent reoccurrence. Actively participate in the Accreditation and Quality Improvement Programs and preparation for organisational accreditation surveys. Learning Organisation Demonstrates commitment to personal and professional development of self and others. Demonstrates the ability to lead and develop a diverse clinical team and participate as an active member of a team. Participate in the orientation of staff as directed by the Nurse Unit Manager or delegate. Facilitate, enhance and support the professional growth and development of staff within the ward/department. Ensure educational opportunities are relevant, practical and timely according to the identified needs of the ward/department, including annual competency assessments as relevant to this role. Maintain and promote awareness of legal and ethical implications of nursing practice. Maintain currency of knowledge and clinical expertise through attendance and participation in in-service education, relevant courses, conferences, seminars and other educational opportunities. Contribute to the development and ongoing review of the ward/department portfolio framework. Demonstrate commitment to specific portfolios/participation in committees or working groups as delegated by the Nurse Unit Manager/delegate. Page 5 of 8

Participate in the review of one s own professional development annually, with the Nurse Unit Manager/delegate, identifying key areas for professional and personal growth. Actively participate in leadership and management development opportunities internally and externally. Information Management Demonstrate ability to operate PC based software packages confidently, with understanding of Microsoft Office and the organisation s Health Information Management system. Demonstrate and understanding of the organisation s Health Information Management system at the level required to fulfil the role. Maintain accurate and timely documentation. Demonstrate verbal and communication skills. Maintain awareness of the organisation s approach to planning, implementation and management of information and communication technology. Participate in information and data management collections systems to assist in meeting both operational and strategic needs of the organisation. Demonstrate ability to critically analyse and effectively utilise data management systems to support and improve care and service delivery. Facilities and Equipment Maintain environment and equipment used within the role, ensuring that cleanliness and safety are adhered to at all times. Responsible for the reporting of any malfunctioning equipment and/or facility to the appropriate line manager. Dispose of waste promptly and according to West Gippsland Healthcare Group Waste Management Policy Ensure the safe and economical use of all resources both clinically and organisationally. 7 Occupational Health and Safety Perform role in a safe manner by adhering to West Gippsland Healthcare Group Occupational Health and Safety policies, regulations and agreed safe work procedures, and report immediately any potential hazards and/or incident occurring in the workplace. Adhere to Infection Control policies and procedures as identified in the West Gippsland Healthcare Group Infection Control Manuals. Adhere to emergency procedures as detailed in the Emergency Procedure Manual. Ensure compliance with Smart Lift program.
