2 JOB SPECIFICATION 1. Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisations goals: 1.1 The Port Lincoln Health Service is committed to safe practice and quality of nursing care by which the community, the profession and other health care workers can assess and measure performance. 1.2 This is supported by organisational structures and processes which ensure: Accountability for the care delivered; Client advocacy; Teamwork and coordination amongst all employees to achieve positive client outcomes. 1.3 The Registered Nurse has a responsibility for promoting the role and function of the registered nurse both internally, and to the community at large Under the direction of the appropriate manager, the registered nurse is required to provide quality nursing care to all patients/clients treated and/or admitted to the Port Lincoln Health Service Reporting / Working Relationships: {To whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation}. 2.1 The Registered Nurse/Midwife is reports to the Manger of the specific clinical area, and is accountable to the Director of Acute Services. 2.2 The Registered Nurse/Midwife provides direct or indirect supervision of Assistants in Nursing, Students in Enrolled Nursing and Enrolled Nurses 2.3 The Registered Nurse/Midwife must establish collaborative and effective working relationship with all nursing and/or midwifery staff. 2.4 The Registered Nurse/Midwife maintains cooperative and productive working relationships with all members of the health care team. 2.5 The Registered Nurse/Midwife is accountable for his/her own practice standards and activities delegated to others. 3. Special Conditions: {Such as travel requirements, flexibility of work hours, location etc}. 3.1 The appointee will be subject to a Criminal History Check prior to confirmation of appointment. 3.2 The incumbent will uphold the Core Values of the Port Lincoln Health Services. 3.3 The incumbent is required to enter into an annual Career Review Process for the achievement of (specific or service or program) outcomes. 3.4 All employees are subject to a six-month probationary period unless they are recruited from within the South Australian Public Sector. 3.5 Some out of hours work may be required. 3.6 The Registered Nurse/Midwife is expected to participate in any mandatory training, unit/ward based competencies and available Staff Development activities as prescribed by the current Enterprise Agreement, and as determined by the organisation. 3.7 The Registered Nurse/Midwife may be required to undertake Higher duties or in charge shift responsibilities as rostered. 4. Statement of Key Job Outcomes and Activities: {Group into major areas of responsibility/activity and list in descending order of importance} 5.1 Technical Skills and Application: Assists with the provision of professional high quality patient care within the ward/unit/service aimed at improving patient health outcomes through: Improving nursing/midwifery and patient care procedures and practices by; Providing direct nursing/midwifery care and/or individual case management to patients/clients on a shift by shift basis based in a defined clinical area. Assessing individual patients/clients needs, planning and implementing or coordinating appropriate service delivery from a range of accepted options Providing health education, counselling and rehabilitation programs to improve the health outcomes of individual patients/clients or groups; Planning and coordinating services including those of other disciplines or agencies as required to meet individual and/or group health care needs; Practicing as a Registered Nurse within a nursing model established to support patient/client care or, as a Registered Midwife working in partnership with women, respecting and supporting their right to self determination in the life processes of pregnancy, birthing and parenthood. Demonstrating and promoting a risk minimisation approach to practice and support implementation and maintenance of systems to protect patients and employees; Contributing to procedures for effectively dealing with people exhibiting challenging behaviours Contributes to the human resource management of the unit/service by; Reviewing decisions, assessments and reccomendations from less experienced Registered Nurses/Midwives, Enrolled Nurses and Students Providing support and guideance to newer or less experienced nursing staff, students and other employees providing basic nursing care. Supporting nursing/midwifery practice learning experiences for students undertaking clinical placement, orientation for any new employees and perceptorship of graduates. Contributes to the achievement of professional expertise through the maintenance of ongoing personal professional development/continuing education by; Continuing own professional development, seek learning opportunities and developing and maintaining own professional development portfolio of learning and experience.. 4 5.2 Teamwork and Communication: Establishes and maintains effective working relations with all clients, customers and relevant persons. Utilises dynamic interpersonal skills conducive to promoting harmony and cooperation in the workplace. Demonstrates advanced written and verbal communication skills. 5.3 Documentation and Administration: Ensure that all documentation is accurate, complies with DoH Guidelines and is completed in a professional and timely manner. Ensures all legislative requirements are evidenced and implemented. 5.4 Continuous Quality Improvement, OHSWIM and Risk Management Programs: Demonstrates an understanding of, the legislative requirements of the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act. Demonstrated commitment and active participation in the Quality Improvement program, supporting the ongoing accreditation of the health service. Use safe and healthy work practices, maintain safe working conditions and monitor the work environment for the purpose of risk minimisation to all employees and patients. Properly utilise safety devices and personal protective equipment. 5.5 Personal and Professional Development: Act to enhance the professional development of self and others, by employing acceptable standards of practice to assess personal and peer performance. 5.6 Customer Service Act in a professional and courteous manner at all times. 5 PERSON SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS {Those characteristics considered absolutely necessary} 1. Educational / Vocational Qualifications: 1.1 Registered as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with the Nurses Board of South Australia and holds a current practicing certificate 1.2 Proficient in the use of Information Technology. 2. Personal Abilities / Aptitudes / Skills: {Related to the job description and expressed in a way which allows objective assessment} 2.1 Have an understanding of, and the ability to manage to the spirit and principles of the Premier s Safety Commitment and the legislative requirements of the Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Act. 2.2 Demonstrates a high standard of written and verbal communication skills. 2.3 Demonstrates a high standard of interpersonal skills with all people at all times, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. 2.4 Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to positively adapt to change. 2.5 Demonstrated ability to plan and priorotise workloads to effectively meet set deadlines. 2.6 A commitment towards quality improvement, and active participation in the processes involved. 2.7 Ability to be creative, innovative and flexible when approaching issues within the health care setting. 3. Experience: 3.1 Demonstrated competence in the relevant area of nursing practice in accordance with appropriate standards of practice 4.
