3 Dairy Farm, 2 London Road, Halesworth, IP19 8LH Guide Price: 695,000 Freehold DESCRIPTION & HISTORY Dairy Farm in Halesworth is an important Grade II* Listed family house situated close to the town centre. The accommodation is arranged over three floors and boasts a magnificent first floor panelled master bedroom. The lower back wing of Dairy Farm (which is now the kitchen and dining room and bedrooms above) was built about 1500 or earlier. This Medieval timber framed farmhouse was called Baxters. This was built onto and adjoining with another (back wing of what is now adjoining Gothic House) by Robert Norton between 1540 and He was a wealthy landowner and developed a business exporting Suffolk dairy produce to the English garrisons in France. The jutted front of the old farmhouse was carried all the way along the new front of the grand mansion. A new block was built on a lavish scale at an estimate of 460 oak trees being used in this construction. What is now Dairy Farm was the lower end of the new house and much less decorative and was probably used to service the kitchen areas for the big house and what was Baxters is still a semi separate farmhouse. In 1582 the house was inherited by Sir Richard Saltonstall, a very wealthy self-made man who was a Lord Mayor of London in His nephew helped to found Boston, Massachusetts in the USA. In 1640 the estate was sold to John Bedingfield and he installed elaborate panelling and mantelpieces which were removed by 1847 from Gothic House, but it is thought that the panelling in the first floor of Dairy Farm was reused from Gothic House. Two of his sons were knighted and his brother become Lord Chief Justice and another Lord Mayor of London. The house was tenanted during most of the 18th Century and in 1783 it was bought by the wealthy Mr John Dresser, who converted the house in to a boarding school by He was a land agent and later became High Sherriff of Suffolk. He did quite a lot of alternations to the front of both houses, changing the windows into Georgian sashes and adding what is now the front door of Dairy Farm. He also added a large extension to the back of Dairy Farm. In 1848 Thompson George bought the upper end only and remodelled it in Gothic fashion. In 1889 Gothic House and Dairy Farm were auctioned by Flick & Son and it was stipulated the purchaser had to block up all doorways from Lot 1 (Gothic House) into Lot 2 (Dairy Farm), which created the separate property as it is now.

4 The farmhouse, barns and approximately 64 acres was bought by Thomas Sheldrake who was already a tenant and in 1949 it was then bought by Thomas Gowlett. The current owners purchased the property five years ago and have carried out major renovations including installing a full gas fired central heating system, antique style radiators, luxury bath and shower rooms, bespoke handmade kitchen/breakfast room and a stunning sun room with tri-fold doors opening onto the attractive rear garden. Also a one bedroom attached annexe has been created offering additional accommodation suitable for a dependent relative or a possible rental income. The oak framed cow shed, which was part of the Old Dairy Farm buildings, has now been renamed Jasmine Barn and is also being marketed by Flick & Son separately. In all, Dairy Farm is a fine family house situated in a delightful location close to the heart of this popular market town. There is also a pretty walled garden and off street parking. LOCATION The popular market town of Halesworth is centred around a pedestrian precinct with a wide variety of shops which cater for most everyday needs. Halesworth has a primary school, library, arts centre, doctors surgery and cottage hospital, which make it very self contained. The town is also well served with transport communications having a railway station which offers a service via Ipswich to London Liverpool Street.
