Further information on Agenda for Change is available on the NHS Employers website: GE Please note that there may be some local agreements in place staff employed within HSC sector in Northern Ireland Department Cardiology Specialist Nursing Service Base Antrim locality Reports to Cardiac Rehabilitation Co-ordinator Responsible to Assistant Director of Acute Services Job Summary The Cardiac Support Assistant will be required to work under the direction of the Cardiology Specialist Nurses. The Cardiac Support Assistant post is a joint role encompassing providing care and rehabilitation to cardiac patients and their carers, and providing effective and efficient clerical support for the Cardiology Specialist Nursing Service. The staff member will be fully supported to achieve the required competencies to fulfil this dual position. Key result areas/ Main responsibilities The Cardiac Support Assistant will assist the Cardiology Specialist Nursing Team with appropriate delegated duties. Clinical Duties Carry out clinical observation and other procedures as required e.g. blood pressure, respiration, height, weight, ECG recording. Carry out capillary and venepuncture sampling as appropriate to the role Assist patients towards independence and gives practical advice to ensure immediate wellbeing of patients. Obtain patients consent for all procedures. Receive patient into clinical area and prepare patient for procedure. Participation in teaching Emergency Life Saving to patients and

2 carers. Observing, monitoring and supporting of patients and carers during exercises and educational sessions and reporting any problems to nurse in charge. Ensuring safe and appropriate environment before and after sessions. Maintain respect for patients property and privacy and ensure patient s personal requirements are kept near at hand. Ensure confidentiality regarding information about patients and nursing department in general. Reports to Cardiology Specialist Nurse any changes in the patients general condition and changes in care arrangements as appropriate. Be aware of and contribute to efficient and effective use of nursing supplies, equipment and resources. Maintains and controls stock of stationery and other materials and ensures proper and safe storage of it. Works in co-operation with other team members. Reports all incidents, accidents and complaints and participates in the investigation of these where necessary. Works flexibly in the cardiology specialist nurse locations Trust wide when required. Administrative Duties Ensures good communication by phone, message taking, and liaison with other disciplines. Maintains accurate records in patient s notes. Promptly submits statistical returns as requested. Maintains an up to date diary. Arranges meetings in relation to cardiology specialist nursing services. Uses departmental and trust information management technology. Participates with update of Cardiology Specialist Nursing Databases. Filing, photocopying, dealing with incoming and outgoing mail, etc. Typing memos, forms, letters and reports, etc. as required from manuscript and notes. Works flexibly in the cardiology specialist nurse locations Trust wide if required. Undertakes other appropriate duties as dictated by the needs of the service. Adheres to: All Trust policies and procedures. Health and Safety at work Legislation Other Responsibilities Attends in-service training programmes and seminars as arranged through Cardiology Specialist Nurse Lead /Cardiac Rehabilitation Co-ordinator. Attends and participates in regular staff meetings.

3 Participates in research-based projects. Participates in Individual Performance Review Process. Works within the supervision/support framework provided by the nursing team under NMC Code of Professional Conduct, June 2002 Ref.4:6. This states that the registered nurse may delegate care delivery to others who are not registered nurses. Such delegation must not compromise existing care, but must be directed to meeting the needs and servicing the interests of patients and clients. The registered nurse remains accountable for the appropriateness of the delegation, for ensuring that the person who does the work is able to do it and that adequate supervision or support is provided. General Responsibilities Employees of the Trust will be required to promote and support the mission and vision of the service for which they are responsible and :- At all times provide a caring service and to treat those with whom they come into contact in a courteous and respectful manner Carry out their duties and responsibilities in a manner which assures patient and client safety Demonstrate their commitment by their regular attendance and the efficient completion of all tasks allocated to them Comply with the Trust s No Smoking Policy Carry out their duties and responsibilities in compliance with health and safety policy and statutory regulations Adhere to equal opportunities policy throughout the course of their employment Ensure the ongoing confidence of the public in service provision Comply with the HPSS Code of Conduct Records Management All employees of the Trust are legally responsible for all records held, created or used as part of their business within the Trust including patient/client, corporate and administrative records whether paperbased or electronic and also including s. All such records are public records and are accessible to the general public, with limited exceptions, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and the Data Protection Act Employees are required to be conversant with the Trust s) policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.

4 Pay and Terms and Conditions Agenda for Change pay and terms and conditions will apply. Further information on Agenda for Change is available on the NHS Employers website: ANGE Please note that there may be some local agreements in place for staff employed within HSC sector in Northern Ireland. Some important points are set out below: Salary 16,110-19,077 per annum Hours Normal full-time hours of duty are 37½ hours per week, exclusive of meal times. Medical Appointment will be subject to a successful pre-employment health assessment. Holidays 27 days each year; 29 days after 5 years service; 33 days after 10 years service and 10 statutory and public holidays. Pension The postholder can participate in the Health and Personal Social Services Superannuation Scheme. Probationary Period You will serve a probationary period of normally six months. Waiting List A waiting list may be created for any similar permanent / temporary, full/part- time posts which may arise within the next 9 months in the Cardiology Specialist Nursing Service Trust wide. Pay Protection Legacy Trust Staff who apply for a promotion after 1 April 2011 should be aware that they will lose their legacy protection arrangements and will be entitled to pay protection in accordance with circular HSS (JNF)(1) This circular will also apply to legacy staff who are currently in receipt of protection and who move post on promotion.

6 PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION JOB TITLE AND BAND: Cardiac Support Assistant, Band 3 DEPARTMENT: Cardiology Specialist Nursing Service LOCATION: Antrim Locality Factor *Qualifications and Experience Essential Criteria/Competencies Required Applicants must provide evidence by the closing date for application that they are working in the Northern Health & Social Care Trust as an employee and via an agency and must have:- (a) NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Care/Clinical Health Care Skills PLUS 6 months paid experience in either a caring or administrative role Method of Assessment Application form. NB: Only those applicants who state clearly on their application form that they have the required level of qualification/experience will be considered for interview. OR (b) NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Care/Clinical Health Care Skills PLUS 1 year s paid experience in either a caring or administration role OR (c) NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in administration PLUS 1 years paid experience in either a caring or administrative role OR (d) 4 GCSE s (Grade A-C) PLUS 1 years paid experience in either a caring or administrative role AND In addition to a, b, c or d applicants must hold a CLAIT qualification or possess computer experience. Applicants must achieve further training in health care/administration if required including QCFQ Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Health Care Support within a timescale agreed Applicants must state clearly on their application form that they possess computer experience

7 Knowledge Skills and Aptitudes Special Circumstances Health Requirements Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of the post. Knowledge of filing systems. Knowledge of computer systems. Good communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to care for patients. Evidence of computer literacy. Display screen equipment user. Current full driving licence (valid for use in the UK) and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits them from driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post. Ability to work flexible hours as the needs of the service demands, including weekends and public holidays. Ability to work flexibly in the cardiology specialist nursing locations Trust wide. The staff member will be fully supported to achieve the required competencies to fulfil this dual position. Acceptable attendance record General good health for the demands of the post.
