1 JOB TITLE: DEPARTMENT: BASE: HOURS OF DUTY: REPORTS TO: RESPONSIBLE TO: SENIOR DENTAL OFFICER COMMUNITY DENTAL SERVICE SWAH/ OMAGH (to be determined) 7.5 hours CLINICAL DIRECTOR COMMUNITY DENTAL SERVICE CLINICAL DIRECTOR COMMUNITY DENTAL SERVICE ROLE PURPOSE In conjunction with the Clinical Director the post holder will be responsible for planning, developing and providing dental services for older people and those with Special Needs including patients who are medically compromised. The post holder will work closely with the other senior dental officers as part of the senior dental team to ensure that services are delivered within a robust clinical governance framework. DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES To plan, co-ordinate and provide dental services including screening, clinical treatment and prevention for older people and people with special care needs including those with mental ill health and disabilities. To participate in the co-ordination and delivery of dental services for patients who are medically compromised. To accept referrals of cases from community dental officers, general dental practitioners, hospital consultants and others following established protocols for referrals. To advise and, where appropriate, assist community dental officers to provide specialist treatment for older people/special needs. To provide treatment in various settings e.g. clinics, domiciliary and hospital To participate in the provision of the dental GA service as required. To liaise closely with Dental Therapists/Hygienists in directing their work for these patients

2 To develop and participate in training programmes in conjunction with Community Dental Staff for carers, nursing staff, other health and social care professionals, and community groups who are working with these groups. To plan and co-ordinate needs assessment and epidemiological surveys for older people and people with special needs. To plan and undertake research with partners as appropriate aimed at improving the oral health of client groups. The post holder will liaise on behalf of Community Dental with all relevant health and social care professionals and with other relevant statutory and non-statutory organisations. To regularly review, evaluate and revise established standards and protocols for the provision of dental services in light of research / evidence based practice / professional guidelines. To monitor and evaluate the quality of dental services provided for these clients in order to meet professional standards. Management To deputize for the Clinical Director during periods of absence. To undergo annual appraisal / revalidation. To contribute to the continuing professional development of the community dental team by carrying out appraisal for the maintenance of standards and assist in identifying training needs and organizing appropriate courses / attachments for all grades of staff. To manage and direct members of the dental team by delegating appropriate responsibility within his/her control whilst retaining overall responsibility and accountability for results. To supervise and assist General Practice Trainees students on placement within the Trust. To supervise dental student placements, undergraduate and postgraduate and dental teaching programmes. To participate in the preparation of business plans, reports etc. for the further development of dental services, or other projects as designated by the Trust.

3 To ensure smooth running of the clinic and the health and safety of those who use it and to notify as soon as possible his/her line manager of any accidents/ incidents which occur within the workplace. To deal with complaints according to Trust policies and procedures. To maintain staff relationships and morale within teams. To participate, as required, in the selection and appointment of staff in accordance with procedures laid down and approved by the Trust. To take such action as may be necessary in disciplinary and grievance matters, in accordance with procedures laid down and approved by the Trust. To monitor performance of self and others against recognised standards and targets. To maintain records and submit statistical returns. To use initiative, to adapt, make / recommend changes required in order to meet the varying needs of the service.
