1 BRADLEY STOKE COMMUNITY SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION: GRADE: REPORTS TO: Web/VLE Developer and elearning Consultant Hay 8 37 hours per week, all year round 22,958-25,472 depending on experience Curriculum Team Leader for ICT 1. JOB PURPOSE Under the general direction of the Curriculum Team Leader for ICT, to maintain and develop the school s virtual learning environment (VLE), FROG To recommend future development of the school s VLE in accordance with the strategy of the Governing Body and to oversee installation of agreed developments, in order to meet the needs of the school and the curriculum. To work in a consultancy role alongside teaching colleagues to support e-learning and develop their online presence, enabling students to achieve high standards and to become independent learners To manage and co-ordinate the development of electronic communication systems (website and digital signage) To assist in maintaining the school s ICT network and systems To actively promote and contribute to the school ethos and values 2. MAIN DUTIES Virtual learning environment (VLE FROG ) a) To pro-actively lead the co-ordination and development of the school s VLE (FROG), including all integrated web applications, alongside the ICT Curriculum Team Leader and a Deputy Headteacher. b) To ensure the effective day-to-day running of the VLE. See Appendix for specific duties. Supporting colleagues in an elearning and creative capacity c) To work alongside the Curriculum Team Leader for ICT and Deputy Headteacher responsible for ICT to develop a creative, confident and effective approach to using elearning resources in the classroom. See Appendix for specific duties. Electronic Communication Systems d) To co-ordinate and streamline the school s electronic communication systems (including the website and digital signage) and ensure their effective operation. See Appendix for specific duties.
2 ICT support during busy periods. e) The post holder will also be expected to assist the ICT Support and Development Team during busy periods (e.g. summer holidays) to prepare the schools ICT learning resources for use. See Appendix for specific duties. General To implement whole school policies and practices Participate in initiatives associated with student engagement in non-academic enrichment activities To attend relevant meetings To undertake other duties which may from time to time be reasonably assigned by the Headteacher and members of the school s Leadership Team and which are commensurate with the post. 3. DIMENSIONS Approx 1120 students Approx 145 staff Approx 2000 parents/carers VLE Budget Approx 10, JOB CONTEXT ICT plays an essential part in the operational life of the school. The VLE/Web Developer should play a leading role in the development, maintenance and, where appropriate, in the use of all available VLE/Web resources throughout the school. 5. SUPERVISION Under the general supervision and direction of the Curriculum Team Leader for ICT; there will however, be a high level of personal responsibility for the day-to-day management of the school s VLE systems and infrastructure. 6. PROBLEMS AND DECISIONS Determine the most efficient and cost effective options for the Headteacher and Governing body to adopt in order to develop the school s VLE in line with the school s ICT strategy. Planning and prioritisation of work to meet internal or external deadlines.. 7. CONTACTS Daily interaction with all staff, students, external suppliers and contractors. Staff = to provide technical support for classroom based learning;
3 Students = to increase ICT and e-learning capacity by educating them in new technologies and software Parents/Carers = to provide technical support to allow parents/carers to access and monitor student progress 8. KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING (or competencies) Degree level education, or equivalent advanced ICT design/multimedia qualification, or other relevant specific qualification in ICT and substantial relevant postqualification applied practical ICT experience OR substantial practical experience in a relevant work area together with a vocational/academic qualification at NVQ level 4 or equivalent and a good level of general education normally evidenced by a minimum of 5 GCSEs (including Maths and English) at Grade C or above or other equivalents. An excellent understanding of web technologies, content management systems e.g. Joomla, web development, graphics and animation software e.g. Adobe CS5 suite A creative thinker with a passion for web 2.0 technologies Ideally have experience of using/ developing Frog or another online learning platform An excellent understanding of ICT hardware and software systems Excellent organisation skills, including record keeping Ability to create, maintain and enhance effective relationships Ability to maintain effective communication with other staff and students Ability to work well under pressure and have a good sense of humour Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team Ability to carry out instructions in all subject areas Record of good health and excellent timekeeping 9. PHYSICAL EFFORT Lifting and movement of resources and equipment will often be required, using trolleys where appropriate. 10. WORKING ENVIRONMENT Duties will normally be undertaken within technical offices, classrooms or other rooms located within the school building. 11. EQUIPMENT Use of specialist ICT equipment. Lifting and moving of equipment, resources and materials, with use of trolleys as necessary. 12. GENERAL The job description sets out the main duties of the post and does not describe in detail all tasks required to carry them out.
4 13. SPECIAL NOTES OR CONDITIONS The postholder should be contactable outside normal office hours and will be expected to respond appropriately in the event of emergencies which may arise. The postholder will be subject to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check to satisfy child protection requirements. The post is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all convictions or cautions must be declared. There will be some requirement for duties to be undertaken outside of the normal working day. The post holder has a responsibility to promote and safeguard the safety and welfare of children in accordance with the school s child protection and behaviour management policy.
5 Appendix 2 b) To ensure the effective day-to-day running of the VLE. To include but not limited to:- providing support to all users of the VLE including staff, students, parents/carers and governors oversight of the administration of users, courses, groups and resources uploading and configuring e-learning materials within the VLE developing the design and configuration of the individual FROG sites monitoring the performance of the VLE and carrying out routine maintenance working with the data and exam team to ensure smooth data transfer between the schools information management system (SIMS) and FROG overseeing the development and implementation of a staff training plan for the virtual learning environment and elearning tools actively offering support and advice to staff on how to improve their use of the VLE dealing directly with FROG s frontline support maintaining professional knowledge related to the maintenance, support and upgrading of the school s VLE and related systems assisting in the design and provision of relevant training and guidance to staff and students and trouble-shooting help as required. working off-site supporting partner schools on a pre-arranged basis with extensions of the VLE liaising with external suppliers, agencies, service providers and partners to secure appropriate support, seek advice and prepare any required response to facilitate the effective management of the VLE and associated systems soliciting quotes and handle purchases 2 c) To work alongside the Curriculum Team Leader for ICT and Deputy Headteacher responsible for ICT to develop a creative, confident and effective approach to using elearning resources in the classroom. To include but not limited to:- working with staff to develop their ICT skills so they are more confident with new technologies researching and demonstrating different types of software and hardware for use in teaching situations keeping up to date with the latest in elearning pedagogy and practice working with the relevant staff innovations team to raise the profile of elearning across the school supporting groups of students in a research and development capacity to find suitable elearning solutions educating students in new technologies and software to increase their ICT and elearning capacity working with other creative staff to film and edit school productions, including evening performances
6 sourcing and editing video resources to make them suitable for use in the classroom providing technical and creative assistance for live, streaming video and audio productions occasionally designing and producing professional printed materials, liaising with external printing companies and managing supply deadlines working with other schools web designers in order to share ideas and best practice 2 d) To co-ordinate and streamline the school s electronic communication systems (including the website and digital signage) and ensure their effective operation. To include but not limited to:- developing and maintaining content on the school website and digital signage system collecting, editing and presenting information for the school website and digital signage system raising awareness of the electronic communication systems amongst staff making sure the website is operational during emergency school closure days as an information source for all stakeholders training other staff to use these resources 2e) The post holder will also be expected to assist the ICT Support and Development Team during busy periods (e.g. summer holidays) to prepare the schools ICT learning resources for use. To include but not limited to:- following up faults in the system, hardware and software and to rectify them through the quickest and most cost effective method ensuring that the computer suites and workstations are maintained and well organised, taking into account health and safety requirements assisting in the deployment of laptop trolleys, as appropriate, to teaching spaces ensuring that hardware/software throughout the school is secure, both physically in terms of firewalls and password structure ensuring that all software used in school is legal playing a pro-active role in the management of the school s ICT system to update and forward plan.
