It develops exhibitions and events at its College Street site and other locations that increase community access and understanding of this information. The Museum also provides strategic advice to businesses and government bodies on scientific matters. The Australian Museum s mission is: To inspire the exploration of nature and cultures. The Design and Creative Media Unit is part of Program Delivery and Production that is one of four Branches that make up the Public Engagement and Culture Division. This Division is responsible for the development and delivery of the many and varied ways the Museum interacts with its visiting public, whether virtual, through the door or through outreach programs. The Design and Creative Media Unit plays a critical role in the planning, development and delivery of these programs. Primary purpose of the role The Design and Creative Media Unit combines the skills of design, photography and video production to produce the creative output for exhibitions, strategic projects, and marketing and communications of the Australian Museum. The unit works to promote the Museum s brand and ensure the visitor experience is of the highest standard. The Graphic Designer works with other members of the Unit in the development and delivery of graphic design solutions for print, digital, display and exhibitions. Key accountabilities Produce graphic design and communication material for projects and ongoing products that deliver exceptional experiences for Museum visitors 1

2 Implement design solutions that are creative, appropriate and consistent with the Museum s brand and vision, while conveying the aims, messages and themes of the project Maintain awareness and familiarity with emerging technologies to utilise the tools required to maximise product quality Manage design files and support digital archiving and systems as established by the Unit Manager and Studio Coordinator Manage work schedule and coordinate production of design deliverables, and when required oversee installation of display graphics Key challenges Negotiating sometimes conflicting expectations of stakeholders and delivering a design and product that is jointly accepted Working within time constraints to provide completed products on time, within the brief and on budget including supervising and scheduling printers and other external suppliers, together with the Studio Coordinator Undertaking a number of projects simultaneously and managing the demands of time and cost restrictions in delivering a creative, high quality product Key relationships Who Internal Why Clients The position holder actively communicates with clients for whom work is being undertaken and assists the client in clarifying their concepts and needs. The position holder provides advice on creative direction, maintains regular contact with clients, and is responsible for negotiating job specifications, timelines and production costs. Project teams The position holder participates on a number of internal project teams and communicates closely with other team members to ensure that projects are developed within Museum design guidelines. Manager Design and Creative Media and team External The position holder maintains regular contact with the Unit Manager and Studio Coordinator to overview priorities and project progress to ensure the quality of the delivered product. Within the Design and Creative Media Unit the position holder attends weekly meetings and communicates with team members on a daily basis to coordinate design projects and to exchange ideas. Print production houses and suppliers The position holder is responsible for communicating design and production specifications to printers and other external suppliers and together with the Studio Coordinator monitors production to ensure the quality of the delivered product. 3 Role dimensions Decision making The position holder works independently within the parameters set by the Manager Design and Creative Media and by the design brief provided by the client. They translate client needs to create innovative design solutions and recommend appropriate design options and materials. They make design decisions in consultation with their manager and the client or project team. The position holder sources, recommends and oversees printers and other commercial suppliers, together with the Studio Coordinator who acts as the middle person between these contractors and the client or Project Coordinator. After initial discussion with their Manager, the Graphic Designer is expected to deal independently with the day to day problems of completing their design projects. Reporting line This role reports to the Manager Design and Creative Media Direct reports None Budget/Expenditure Production budgets as allocated, depending on the nature of the project assigned. Essential requirements High level of skills in creative design and typography, and a portfolio of graphic design work across print, display and digital Experience in print production processes and preparing finished artwork for print, display, web and digital Advanced skills across the Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator Qualifications in Graphic Design or Visual Communication, or equivalent industry experience, minimum 3 years professional experience Capabilities for the role The NSW Public Sector Capability Framework applies to all NSW public sector employees.
