1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title Group Branch Reports to (Title) Corporate Strategy Planner Strategy and Governance Strategy and Regulation Manager, Strategy and Regulation Date created/revised September 2015 Position Type Evaluation No & Date (P&C use only) Job Purpose The Corporate Strategy Planner is a permanent, full time role and is responsible for leading the development of South East Water s Corporate Strategy. This role will also include leading the delivery of a Corporate Plan on an annual basis, and development of key performance measures to ensure delivery of South East Water s strategic objectives. The role forms an important part of the Strategy and Regulation team which also has responsibility for pricing and economic regulation and water resources planning. This role will provide strategic advice to the wide range of business units and staff that have ownership of the details within the Corporate Strategy. This is crucial to the success of the Corporate Strategy and the alignment of our key performance indicators with the strategic direction of the organisation. Key Accountabilities Strategic & Corporate Planning Lead and influence the ongoing development of South East Water s Corporate Strategy Lead and influence the embedding of the strategy and culture into the operation of the business Page 1 of 6

2 Maintain an understanding of the broad strategic issues facing South East Water to incorporate into the strategic planning process. This includes customer insights, business performance, industry trends and issues such as political developments federally and locally. This will require strong engagement internally and externally Working with and providing strategic advice to key business representatives, including the Managing Director, General Managers and senior managers, for development and ongoing review of the strategic goals that are aligned to the Corporate Strategy Drive, manage and lead the annual corporate planning process with the Executive and Board Develop draft and final reporting (including Strategic and Corporate Plan documents and other reports as required) to a high standard in the required time. KPI analysis and reporting Lead and influence the review and ongoing development of non-financial key performance indicators to ensure they are driving improved business performance and are aligned to achieving South East Water s strategic direction Be responsible for internal monitoring and reporting of key performance measures to the Board and Executive Responsibility for external reporting to regulators and government, including the Half Yearly report to Government on progress against the Corporate Plan and the Essential Services Commission performance reporting. Overall impact This position plays a key role in the shaping, developing and leading South East Water s strategic direction, and also has an important role in influencing and developing the right key performance measures and behaviours to ensure business alignment to the corporate strategy. Level of Authority The Corporate Strategy Planner will lead the development of corporate strategy and its embedding into the operation of the business. The incumbent will also be responsible for review and development of key performance indicators and recommend adoption to Board and Executive as appropriate. They will also undertake tasks within rules, guidelines and procedures developed for the position; however there will be a degree of adaption required as the policy environment changes. With respect to tasks requiring analysis and presentation of options, the incumbent will be expected to demonstrate their own initiative with respect to alternatives and analysis, with recommendations being developed for executive and board approval. 3 Decisions made by job holder: Decisions made by the job holder will be within the scope of the accountabilities of this position and will include recommendations to the General Counsel, Strategy and Governance on Corporate and Strategic Plans. Decisions referred to manager: Submissions to Government that require Executive and Board approval will require review from the Manager Strategy and Regulation and the General Counsel Strategy and Governance. Typical problems solved by job holder: Problems to be solved by the job holder will be related to ensuring appropriate strategies for the business are consistent with the business long-terms strategic direction. Sources of guidance provided by the organisation: This issues dealt with this position will be guided by government requirements, legislation and policies, and the Essential Services Commission s regulations, codes and guidelines. Key Contacts The Corporate Strategy Planner will need to maintain strong working relationships with all areas of the business as they relate to key performance standards. They will participate in and lead working groups internal to the South East Water, as well as external. The incumbent will also need to work closely with the Essential Services Commission and the Department of Primary Industry and Environment in relation to key performance measures and reporting and other relevant matters. 4 Knowledge, Skills, Attributes & Experience Minimum level of educational qualifications required for the role The Corporate Strategy Planner must have (or is working towards) tertiary qualifications in a business related field or relevant business experience. Post-graduate degree would be highly regarded. Highest level of skills required to perform at a competent level Proven ability to review and develop Corporate Strategy Frameworks Capability to develop key performance indicators that drive business performance Ability to work with senior management, providing direction in developing strategies and tactical execution plans Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including; o Preparation of high quality and strategic board and executive papers. Capability to effectively convey to internal and external stakeholders complex issues into simple language Strong conceptual thinker Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to lead and manage teams Strong stakeholder engagement skills Proven ability to negotiate outcomes with broad organisational outcomes Strong project management skills and ability manage competing priorities Delivery focus Demonstrated capacity to solve problems and identify solutions.
