2 Windws Internet Basics Class Outline What is the Internet? The Internet is a huge netwrk f netwrks. A netwrk is a number f cmputers that are cnnected s that they may cmmunicate with ne anther and share infrmatin. The Internet is made up fr millins f these netwrks! Types f Sites Websites - a grup f web pages that prvide infrmatin r services. Search Engines allws users t search and retrieve infrmatin. prvides a way t cmmunicate with ther individuals nline by sending messages back and frth. Blgs persnal r prfessinal websites that take jurnal frm. Scial netwrks site that allws peple t share infrmatin with each ther such as pictures, statuses, and links What is the Wrld Wide Web? The Wrld Wide Web r the Web is a system that helps yu access infrmatin frm the Internet. Peple ften use the terms the Internet and the Web interchangeably, but they are nt the same thing. The Web is a subset f all the infrmatin that is available n the entire Internet. It is the mst widely used part. What is a Web Brwser? A web brwser is a sftware applicatin that allws users t access Internet resurces and brwse web sites. Examples: Internet Explrer Mzilla Firefx Ggle Chrme Safari Practice: Internet Explrer G t the Internet Explrer icn n yur desktp and duble click t pen it. On the library s cmputers it will pen up the library hme page.

3 What is a Website? A website is a grup f web pages that prvide infrmatin r services. Hme Page: The first page yu see when a website lads. It cntains general infrmatin abut the site. Navigating n a Website Links: Links are highlighted r underlined features n a webpage that, when clicked, take yu t anther page. Yu can tell it is a link when the cursr turns int a hand. Back Arrw/Buttn: When yu click the back buttn, it takes yu back in rder thrugh all the pages yu have seen. Back Frward Frward Arrw/Buttn: When yu click the frward buttn, it takes yu frward in rder thrugh all the pages yu have seen. Scrlling Mst websites have s much infrmatin n the screen that it des nt all fit. In rder t see all the infrmatin, simply use the scrll bar at the right hand side f the screen t mve up in dwn. Yu can als scrll with yur up and dwn buttns n the keybard. Parts f a Web Address A web address is the address f the website. It ges in the address bx f the brwser. The address bx is the narrw, rectangular bx in the brwser windw where yu can type the address. Remember: 1. There are n spaces in web addresses. 2. Be careful f misspellings. 3. Yu d nt need t type http: f the web address in mst web brwsers. 4. Web addresses are mst ften typed in lwercase. 4 Tlbar: Standard Buttns Menu Bar: File Buttn The File buttn n Internet Explrer allws yu t create new tabs, pen new windws, and als print. When yu click n New Tab, Internet Explrer pens a secnd tab within the same windw. This allws yu t brwse back and frth between tw different websites at nce in the same windw. The New Windw ptin, allws yu t have tw different windws f Internet Explrer pen at the same time. Yu can see there are tw different windws pen by lking at yur task bar. The File buttn als gives yu quick and easy access t the Print ptin. Print immediately sends the webpage t the printer while the Print Preview buttn shws yu an image f what yu are printer first.

5 Previewing and Printing Web Pages Befre printing a dcument, it is imprtant that yu preview the page r pages. Print Preview allws yu t see hw the dcument will print. It als shws yu hw many pages the dcument is. Print Preview is lcated under the arrw buttn beside the printer icn r under the File buttn in the Menu Bar. In Print Preview, yu have the ptin t change the view frm prtrait t landscape rientatin. Yu can als remve headers and fters. Click the printer icn and yu are all set t g! Bkmarks Allws yu t save and rganize yur mst frequently used websites s that yu can easily find them again. Make sure yu are n the page yu wuld like t save. G t the Favrites buttn with the star underneath the File buttn. Click Add t Favrites. A windw will pp up. Click Add. It will appear in yur list f saved websites. Yu can als access the Bkmark menu by ging t the Favrites buttn n the Menu Bar.

6 Activity: Website Web Quest Fllw the steps t cmplete yur quest. 1. Click n the Adults link. a. This will pen up a windw with the Adult Events at the library. b. Find ut what time the 2 nd Wednesday Bk Club meets. Write the time belw. 2. Click the Hme link t return back t the library hme page. 3. Click the Lcatin link at the tp f the page. a. Find ut what hurs the library is pen n Wednesday. Write the hurs belw. 4. Click the Back Buttn till yu return t the Library Hme page. 5. Click in the Address Bx at the tp f the windw. a. Type in the address bx. b. Hit Enter. c. This will pen up the Ggle website. 6. Click in the Search bx in the middle f the page. 7. Type Exercise in the bx and click enter. 8. Click n the first search result, Physical exercise - Wikipedia. 9. Click the Back Buttn t return t the search results. 10. Click the Frward Buttn t return t the article n Exercise. 11. Return t the library hme page by clicking n the Hme buttn. Hmewrk Practice what yu have learned fr 15 minutes a day. Play arund with the web brwser n yur hme cmputer. Learn the different buttns n the tlbars. Practice navigating thrugh different websites.
