If GPSN was recently updated, the brwser may be keeping a cache f the lder versin. T get the latest versin t display, cmpletely clse the brwsers and all pen brwsing windws. Initially, GPSN will prvide access t Chinese patent infrmatin frm the State Intellectual Prperty Office (SIPO) f the Peple s Republic f China. Dcuments available include published applicatins, granted patents and utility mdels frm 1985 t There are plans t add additinal internatinal patent cllectins in the future. 4. What infrmatin is in the database? The infrmatin available includes full text native language Chinese patent dcuments and their crrespnding English machine translatins. Additinally, full dcument images f Chinese patent dcuments are available, which are cnsidered the authritative Chinese patent dcuments. 5. Hw ften is the Glbal Patent Search Netwrk updated? 1

2 This cllectin will peridically be updated as new data becmes available. 6. What are the limitatins f machine translatins? Machine translatin technlgy has sme limitatins and yu may see sentences that can be awkward smetimes. One f the purpses f English machine translatins is t effectively address the language barrier and allw fr quick analysis f the relevancy f the prir art and reduce the need human translatins. Human translatin may be needed if a higher level f accuracy is necessary. Inventr names translatins can be awkward. 7. Hw des ne differentiate amng dcuments in GPSN? User may use the kind cdes t differentiate publicatin dcuments. The system allws searching in simplified Chinese characters. 4. What are the different fields I can search? Hw d I search by inventr? By year? By classificatin? If an initial keywrd search has been perfrmed, there are facets listed n the left pane f the result set windw. Simply select ne f the facets, such as date range (mm/dd/yyyy), kind cde, publicatin year, r classificatin t narrw the result set. 5. Hw d I search by Publicatin number? Select Query Histry ptin t view query histry windw. On the Query Histry windw, select Print t save search histry int PDF file if PDF is ne f the printing destinatins in yur printer selectin screen. Nte: In Internet Explrer, yu will need t have the Adbe PDF plugin installed. 7. What is the ttal number f characters (bytes) that can be entered in the search field fr GPSN? The search field will expand and wrap characters t allw a user t enter mre than 256 characters in the search field. The input search field will autmatically expand t allw multiple lines t be entered by a user. 8. Des GPSN nly search the abstract r the entire dcument? GPSN searches the entire text dcument. Viewing Results 1. Hw d I view an entire patent in the search results? 4

5 Frm the Search Result Set list, click n the dcument yu want t view. The dcument will be expanded with keywrds highlighted. Scrll dwn t the bttm f the dcument, select View Patent t pen dcument detail windw t view the entire patent dcument. If keywrds are in English, the keywrds will be highlighted when viewing Translated English and Bth. If keywrds are in Chinese, the keywrds will be highlighted when viewing Chinese and Bth. 2. Hw d I view the drawings/images in a specific patent? Frm the Search Result Set list, click n the dcument yu want t view. The dcument will be expanded with keywrds highlighted and a thumbnail image f the dcument. Click n the thumbnail t scan the images. Yu can als view larger size images by selecting View Patent. 3. Hw d I view the riginal Chinese text f a Chinese patent dcument? In the dcument detail windw, select Chinese under dcument title t view the riginal Chinese text. 4. Hw can I get a quick view f the dcuments (such as Abstract, keywrds matched) in the result set withut view the full dcument? Frm the Search Result Set list, click n Expand All lcated n the right tp crner f the windw fr quick views f the dcuments displayed n the screen. Key wrds will be highlighted. 5. Hw d I view the full English translatin f a dcument? Frm the Search Result Set list, click n the dcument yu want t view. The dcument will be expanded. Select View Patent, English translatin f the selected dcument will be displayed n dcument detail windw. Yu may als select Translated English ptin in the dcument detail windw t view the English translatin. 6. Can I view bth Chinese and English dcument side by side? 5

6 N. Hwever, yu can view bth Chinese and English paragraph by paragraph. In the dcument detail windw, select Bth under dcument title t view bth Chinese and English paragraph by paragraph. 7. When I view patent detail, there is nly the title, abstract and inventrs in the recrd, but n additinal fields f infrmatin. Why is that? The data displayed is what was received frm SIPO. Sme f the dcuments have limited r missing fields f infrmatin. 8. Hw can I narrw dwn my search result list? Frm the result set windw, click n the facet ptins n the left pane t narrw dwn current search result list, r add mre keywrds in the search input field. 9. What facets can I apply t the search results? Kind Cde, Publicatin Year (r a date range), Classificatin and Inventr Name. 10. Can I select mre than ne facet? Yes 11. Can I remve/delete the facets that I selected? Yes. All the selected facets are listed n tp f result set title. Mve the muse cursr ver a facet that yu want t remve; a strikethrugh line will appear n the selected facet. Click the left muse buttn t remve/delete the selected facet. The result set will autmatically re query based n the remaining facet(s). 12. Why are the translated inventr names s strange? The translatin system used prvides literal translatins f the Chinese characters in the inventr names. 13. What s the default srting rder in the result set? Relevancy ranking (highest listed first). 6

7 14. Can I srt recrds in the result set? Yes. Recrds can be srted by ID and Publicatin Date. Click n a clumn title (e.g. ID) t srt the result set in ascending/descending rder based n that clumn. 15. Hw are recrds being ranked in the result set? Slr/Lucene first uses a Blean mdel t return nly thse dcuments which match the user s query. The search results returned are ranked and srted by relevancy scre with dcuments having the highest scres appear at the tp f the results. The relevancy scre fr each dcument returned in the result uses a statistical apprach called TF IDF (Term Frequency and Inverted Dcument Frequency) based n the terms in the query. If the term frequency is higher in ne dcument than anther, that dcument is cnsidered t be mre relevant t the query. The IDF fr a query term is high when the term is rare and therefre a mre relevant term fr the query. The IDF fr a query term is lw if the term is a cmmn term ccurring in a large number f dcuments acrss the cllectin. Saving/Printing/Dwnlading 1. Hw d I print a patent? Frm the Search Result Set list, select a specific patent t expand the selectin, and click n the View Patent buttn at the bttm f the expanded sectin. A dcument detail windw will be displayed. Yu can select Print buttn t print the selected patent. 2. Can I print mre than ne patent at a time? While yu can print ut multiple patent summaries by checking the print checkbx n the right f each patent in the result set windw, and then clicking the print buttn n the left hand side, yu cannt print ut mre than ne entire patent at nce. 3. 8 Frm the results, select a specific patent t expand the selectin, and click n the View Patent at the bttm f the expanded sectin. A dcument detail windw will be displayed. Yu can click buttn t send a hyperlink f the selected dcument t thers. 4. Hw d I save a cpy f a patent f bth the riginal Chinese patent and the crrespnding machine translatin? Frm the results, select a specific patent t expand the selectin, and click n the View Patent at the bttm f the expanded sectin. Once yu re viewing the patent, make sure yu are viewing bth the English and Chinese text by clicking Bth at the tp left f the patent. At the tp f the dcument detail windw, there shuld be a print buttn that yu can select t save as PDF in Chrme, r Adbe PDF in Internet Explrer (if yu have the Adbe PDF plugin), t save a cpy f the patent. 5. Hw many patents can I print/dwnlad/save at a time? Yu can save ne patent at a time. 6. Hw can I print/save selected dcuments in each f the frmats available? e.g. title nly, the sectins cntaining keywrds, full dcuments? Yu can print the search results with title nly by clicking cllapse all at the upper right side f the result set windw, and then clicking ne f the print ptins frm the print drp dwn list. Yu can print the search results with all the sectins cntaining keywrds by clicking expand all at the upper right side f the result set windw, and then clicking ne f the print ptins frm the print drp dwn list. Yu can print individual patents by clicking the desired patent in the Search Result Set list, selecting View Patent t display the selected dcument in dcument detail windw, and then clicking Print buttn t print. 7. Can I save a cpy f my search results s that I can view the results at a later time? 8

9 If yu cpy the URL f the search results, yu can recreate the search results at a later time. 8. Hw can I share a link f a particular patent? If yu click n buttn in the dcument detail windw, yu can share the hyperlink f that patent dcument with thers via . Search Query Histry 1. What des the search query histry recrd? The search query histry recrds unique search queries a user made. 2. Hw d I save a cpy f my search query histry? On the search query histry page, click the Print buttn. In Chrme, chse Save as PDF ptin t save the search query histry as a PDF file. In Internet Explrer, select the Adbe PDF ptin (yu will need t have the Adbe PDF plugin installed). 3. Hw d I clear my search query histry? In the result set windw, click Query Histry buttn n the left pane t g t Query Histry windw, and then click Clear Histry buttn t clear the entire query histry displayed n the screen.
