4 Intrductin and Overview Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 4 This Handbk prvides imprtant infrmatin fr students pursuing Master s and Ph.D. degrees in the Department f Applied Behaviral Science (ABS). Althugh yu might nt read the entire handbk upn admissin t the ABS department, yu will want t refer back t it ften as yu cmplete the milestnes tward earning yur degree. It is written using a tpic sequence that parallels the rder in which yu will mst likely cmplete yur degree requirements. Separate sectins are prvided fr students entering the Master s degree prgram, Ph.D. prgram, and cmbined Ph.D/M.P.H (Master s f Public Health) prgram. Befre these sectins, the Handbk prvides an verview f the department s histry and infrmatin f relevance t all graduate students. This handbk is updated peridically by the Graduate Curriculum Cmmittee, smetimes with changes in the degree requirements. Yu are bliged t cmplete the requirements described in the Handbk at the time f yur admissin. If mre restrictive requirements are adpted after yur admissin, yu are nt bund by them. Shuld less restrictive requirements be adpted, yu are may fulfill them instead f thse in place at the time f yur admissin. The latest versin f the Handbk is always available nline n the ABS web site. Brief Histry f the Department f Applied Behaviral Science In 1964, under the leadership f Frances Degan Hrwitz and Richard Schiefelbusch, the University f Kansas apprved the re-making f the Department f Hme Ecnmics int the Department f Family Life, later renamed the Department f Human Develpment and Family Life (HDFL). Hrwitz was its funder and chairpersn. One f the first members t jin the new faculty was Dnald Baer wh, in turn, recruited Mntrse Wlf, Barbara Etzel, Tdd Risley, and James Sherman, amng thers. The faculty develped an undergraduate majr that tk an evidence-based functinal apprach t understanding and slving scially imprtant prblems. In 1967, a dctral prgram was apprved and students jined the department frm all ver the cuntry and the wrld. Because KU already had a well established Department f Psychlgy, the HDFL department was free t specialize. It did s in fur distinct areas: (a) research in human develpment and develpmental disabilities, (b) research in intellectual develpment as discriminated behavir; (c) research in early childhd behaviral prcesses, and (d) research in the bilgical basis f behavir. Over the next 35 years, the first specializatin evlved int a prgram f applied behavir analysis, the secnd and third int a line f develpmental and cgnitive research, and the furth int behaviral pharmaclgy (see Baer [1993], A Brief, Selective Histry f the Department f Human Develpment and Family Life at the University f Kansas: The Early Years in the Jurnal f Applied Behavir Analysis, 26, ). By 2000, the department had awarded ver 400 Ph.D. degrees, many f which were earned by individuals wh wuld g n t be leaders in the field f behavir analysis. Recgnizing this achievement, the Sciety fr the Advancement f Behavir Analysis hnred the Department with its award fr Enduring Prgrammatic Cntributins t Behavir Analysis. The award was accepted n behalf f all faculty members by Dn Baer wh presented an acceptance speech titled and Only 25 Years After The Behavir f Organisms. In 2004, the department revised its curricular and prgram requirements t fcus primarily n the applicatin f basic bi-behaviral science, predminantly behavir analysis, t prblems f scietal imprtance. T reflect this shift tward a natural science cre, the department changed its name t the Department f Applied Behaviral Science. The department adpted the fllwing missin statement: t prmte individual, family, and cmmunity develpment thrugh the integratin f teaching, research, and public service.

In rder t btain a graduate degree yu are required t fulfill its requirements, as well as thse f the department. Althugh we attempt t cver all Graduate Schl requirements in this handbk, students shuld check the Graduate Schl website peridically fr the latest infrmatin ( Admissin t the Graduate Schl Incming graduate students must have a bachelr s degree frm an accredited university and have earned an verall GPA f 3.0 r higher. Students with lwer GPA s may be admitted as prbatinary (GPA > 2.75) r prvisinal graduate students. Prbatinary and prvisinal graduate students will be prvided n financial supprt fr as lng as their status is unchanged. Prbatinary students are autmatically admitted as regular degree-seeking graduate students if they earn a 3.0 GPA after having cmpleted the equivalent f ne semester f full-time graduate study (9 hrs in the Fall/Spring r 6 hrs in the Summer). Prbatinary students earning less than a 3.0 GPA after cmpleting these credits will nt be allwed t enrll in the Graduate Schl. Prvisinal students are admitted t the Graduate Schl nly after the Department recmmends they be admitted as regular degree-seeking students. Graduate Schl Guidelines n Research and Teaching Assistantships The latest infrmatin abut Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) may be fund at the website f the Prvst s Office: where yu will find eligibility requirements, infrmatin abut tuitin assistance, and general guidelines. Graduate Schl Schlarships, Fellwships, and Assistantships The graduate schl ffers a number f different fellwships t attract particularly strng applicants. A Dissertatin Fellwship may be applied fr after students have successfully prpsed their dissertatin prject. An ethnic minrity GTA schlarship is als available. Applicatin and eligibility infrmatin fr all f these prgrams may be btained at Graduate Schl Travel Fund Once during yur graduate career, yu may receive a $400 award t cver expenses assciated with attending and presenting a paper at a prfessinal cnference. Be sure t apply early in the year yu hpe t secure funding. The graduate schl has a limited amunt f funding; it is awarded n a firstcme-first-served basis. Mre infrmatin may be btained at

Once yu have yur cpy cde, yu will be able t make cpies billed t yur accunt fr which yu will receive a mnthly statement. The statement is nt cumulative, s yu are required t keep track f yur balance.

7 Departmental Infrmatin Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 7 Departmental Expectatins f Graduate Students: As an incming graduate student, yu may be unsure f what is expected f yu when yu enter the prgram. Yu may think f graduate schl as an extensin f yur undergraduate cursewrk, but will be surprised t find that much mre is expected f yu. Here are sme f the salient differences: As a full-time student, yu will enrll in nly 9 credit hurs each semester (6 hrs in the summer). One f yur curses is usually a research r applied practicum supervised by yur advisr. This may sund like a light curse lad, but yu will find that graduate curses are different frm thse yu cmpleted as an undergraduate. Many graduate curses d nt use textbks. Instead, yu will read peer-reviewed articles r bk chapters every week. Reading ver 100 pages per week is nt unusual. When readings are assigned, yu must read them befre the next class meeting because yu may be tested n their cntent and will be expected t discuss them with the prfessr and yur peers during class. Lectures are infrequent in graduate schl. Yu are respnsible fr knwing and understanding yur curse and practicum training requirements. This ensures that yu can avid misunderstandings that might therwise be cnstrued as miscnduct. In particular, yu shuld btain (a) curse syllabi and written cpies f all class assignments; (b) specific infrmatin n curse deadlines, attendance plicies, and grading practices; and (c) rules fr hw t cmplete class and practicum assignments and exercises, inside and utside f either setting. Yu shuld als assume that unauthrized cllabratin n in-class quizzes, tests, examinatins, and n ut-f-class assignments is nt permitted. Yu shuld retain all returned and graded materials until the final grade is reprted. Yu shuld knw yur instructr s ffice hurs and telephne number, and where the ffice is lcated. Yu are expected t earn A s in all f yur curses. Curses in which yu earn a C- are cnsidered failed curses and will nt cunt tward cmpletin f yur degree. If yur cumulative graduate GPA falls belw a 3.0 yu cannt graduate with a Master s r Ph.D. degree. The Ph.D. degree is a research degree. Therefre, yu are expected t be cnducting research during yur entire tenure in the prgram. Given these expectatins, yur days start early and end late, and yu will wrk n the weekends. If yu are wrking n academic r research activities less than abut 50 hurs a week, yu may nt be meeting yur advisr s expectatins. Because yu are expected t cmplete yur degrees in a timely fashin and t publish the results f yur research, yu are expected t remain in Lawrence during the fall and spring, and t wrk with yur advisr during the summer. Sme advisrs may even expect yu t wrk during the spring and winter breaks. Talk t yur advisr t get a sense f these expectatins. These are high expectatins, but they are expected f any student wh is admitted t and enrlls in a premier graduate prgram. Yu wuld nt have been admitted t ur prgram if we did nt feel cnfident that yu culd meet these expectatins. 8 The Student-Advisr Relatinship: Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 8 The department fllws a junir-clleague mdel. In it, yu and yur advisr share equal respnsibility in planning fr yur academic success and ensuring that yu make timely prgress in meeting the degree requirements f the department, cllege, and university. Yur advisr will assist yu in selecting required and elective curses, develping research prjects, and preparing fr Ph.D. requirements (e.g., selecting the tpic f yur Written and Oral Cmprehensive Exam). Yu and yur advisr will als wrk cllabratively n yur prfessinal develpment. Specifically, yur advisr will assist yu in clarifying yur prfessinal gals and attaining substantive experience in teaching (e.g., identifying pprtunities and mentring), research (e.g., ensuring that students are presenting psters, making presentatins, and publishing their research), and service (e.g., cmmittee wrk at the lcal r natinal level, serving as a jurnal reviewer). Changing yur advisr. Fr a variety f reasns, yu may cmplete yur degree with smene ther than yur riginal advisr. The reasns include: Yur r yur advisr s interests may change such that the tw are n lnger cmpatible. After prviding at least ne full semester s warning, yur advisr may terminate the advising relatinship. This mst ften ccurs when the student fails t make timely prgress tward his/her degree. Yur advisr leaves the department r KU. Yur advisr retires r dies. What happens next depends n yur prgress tward the Ph.D. degree. If yu have cmpleted all the Ph.D. requirements except the defense f yur dissertatin, the department will, after cnsulting with yu, appint a replacement advisr wh will chair the dissertatin cmmittee. If, hwever, yu have nt cmpleted all f the Ph.D. requirements, except the dissertatin defense, the department is under n bligatin t appint a new advisr. It is yur respnsibility t secure a new advisr. Hwever, if yu are in gd standing (e.g., nt n prbatin), the Graduate Prgram Directr and yur current cmmittee (see belw) will wrk with yu t (a) identify a new advisr in the department, (b) identify a new advisr in a different department at KU, r (c) identify a new advisr at anther university. In the end, hwever, the department is under n bligatin t identify a new advisr regardless f the reasn fr the break in the student-advisr relatinship. Shuld a replacement advisr be fund, the new advisr is nt bliged t supervise research that is utside the advisr s area f expertise r interest. Thus, yu may find that yu must change yur area f research t accmmdate yur new advisr. This may add time t earning yur degree. Wh can serve as yur advisr? Yur advisr must be tenured r in a tenure-track psitin and must hld at least a 10% appintment in the department. Adjunct r curtesy faculty can c-advise students, but may nt serve as their nly advisr r, unless authrized, may nt admit students.

9 Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 9 Master s in Applied Behaviral Science: Degree Requirements (If yu are a dctral student, please skip this sectin) Cursewrk: Appendix A cntains a Master s degree checklist fr the curses yu are required t take -- and the sequence in which they shuld be taken -- in rder t earn yur degree. Yu are required t be cntinuusly enrlled frm the time yu are admitted until the time yu earn yur Master s degree. The Master s degree requires at least 30 credit hurs generally numbered 700 and abve taken while classified as a graduate student, including credit hurs enrlled in thesis credit, ABSC 899. Yu are expected t be enrlled full time 9 credit hurs -- each spring and fall semester until yu have cmpleted the curse requirements. The Cllege requires that yu maintain full-time enrllment in the summer as well (6 hurs). Practica: In additin t yur curses, Master s degree students are required t cmplete at least tw semesters f a research r interventin practicum. Speak t yur advisr each semester t determine the sectin (curse number) in which yu shuld enrll. Mst students cmplete their practicum requirement with their advisr, but sme will cmplete it under the supervisin f ther ABS regular, adjunct, and curtesy faculty members. Yu shuld talk t yur advisr abut what pprtunities are available and wh is available t supervise yur activities. If yu are interested in btaining BCBA certificatin, yu must ensure that yur practicum curses meet the BCBA requirements (e.g., supervisin by a BCBA, allcatin f hurs t a variety f prfessinal activities, recrd keeping, etc.). Because the BACB standards change, we direct yu t their website fr the latest infrmatin: Pr-seminar Requirement: Graduate students are expected t attend pr-seminar sessins when they are scheduled thrughut the Fall and Spring semesters. These are usually scheduled fr Friday afternns at 3:30. Pr-seminars are typically presentatins given by graduate students (see next paragraph), faculty members, and visiting schlars. As part f yur Master s degree requirements, yu will be required t present the results f yur research (basic, applied, r cnceptual) at a weekly pr-seminar meeting. The presentatin must be cmparable t that which wuld be given at a prfessinal cnference (nt a panel discussin). Yu shuld be ready t field questins frm yur peers and the faculty in attendance. Master s Thesis: Fr yur M.A. degree, yu are required t prpse, cmplete, write up, and rally defend an empiricallybased Master s thesis. Yu may begin wrking n it as sn as yu begin the prgram, but shuld have begun it by the end f yur first year. The first step is t decide n a tpic and develp the research prject with yur advisr. Next, yu select members f yur thesis cmmittee, the guidelines fr which are prvided belw. Data cllectin may begin nce yur advisr has apprved the prject and yu have apprval frm the university s Human Subject s Cmmittee. Yu may als want t btain apprval frm the ther members f yur thesis cmmittee. While wrking n yur thesis, yu will enrll in ABSC 899 Master s Thesis in Applied Behaviral Science with yur advisr. When yur data are cllected and analyzed, the thesis needs t be written and defended. Yu will have successfully cmpleted yur Master s thesis when it is signed by tw f three members f yur thesis cmmittee (see belw) and yu have cmpleted 30 credit hurs numbered 500 and higher while classified as a graduate student, including credit hurs enrlled in ABSC 899 (see Appendix A).

10 Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 10 Applicatin fr degree. T graduate with the M.A. degree, yu must cmplete an Applicatin fr Degree several mnths in advance f yur anticipated graduatin date. This frm may be btained frm the ABS Graduate Secretary. Yu shuld be aware that the Cllege has strict deadlines and they d nt give extensins t students regardless f yur circumstances. Befre cmpleting the applicatin, yu will need t meet with the graduate secretary t determine if yu have cmpleted all the requirements fr the degree befre scheduling yur defense. Yur cmmittee members must be apprved in writing by the cllege befre yu defend yur Master s thesis. Thesis cmmittee. Yur thesis cmmittee is cmpsed f three members f the KU graduate faculty. Tw f yur members f the cmmittee, including the chair, must have at least a 10% tenure-track appintment in the department. That is, a majrity f the cmmittee must be cmprised f ABS faculty with Regular status, with at least a 10% appintment (see The third member may als be (a) a department member wh is n the graduate faculty and has at least a 10% appintment r (b) may be an ad-hc r special appintment t the graduate faculty. These members are typically ABS curtesy r adjunct faculty members, but they shuld be uniquely qualified by training r experience t serve n the thesis cmmittee. Frming the thesis cmmittee is yur respnsibility and shuld be dne with the advice and cnsent f yur advisr. Changing cmmittee members. Yu may chse t replace members f yur thesis cmmittee at yur discretin. When a change ccurs, fr whatever reasn, yu are respnsible fr finding a replacement. The ABS department incurs n bligatin t prvide a replacement cmmittee member. The dcument itself. The written thesis must cnfrm t the guidelines utlined in the latest editin f the APA Style Manual. It must als cnfrm t the physical specificatins required by the Cllege. Yu shuld review these befre yu start writing s that yu d nt spend time refrmatting it later. This infrmatin may be fund at Thesis defense. When yu have finished writing yur thesis and have had it apprved by yur advisr, yu shuld schedule a time t defend it that can be attended by yur cmmittee members. This is yur respnsibility. Yu are required t ntify the graduate secretary tw weeks in advance f yur plan t schedule a thesis defense. Sme paper wrk must be cmpleted in rder t have the defense. Tw weeks prir t yur defense, yu need t prvide yur cmmittee members with the final draft f yur thesis, including all figures and tables. Shuld a member f the thesis cmmittee request further dcumentatin f any aspect f the research prcess (e.g., cmpleted data sheets r a cntact persn at the research site), this request will be hnred. The defense is passed if 2 f the 3 cmmittee members vte t pass it. If yu d nt pass, yu may nt defend it again fr a perid f at least 90 days. If the ral defense is failed twice, yu have 30 days t petitin the department fr a third attempt. Failure t petitin r a rejected petitin will result in yur dismissal frm the prgram. After a successful defense. Prvided that yu pass yur defense, yu will have all cmmittee members sign a title page that cntains lines fr their signature. Give these title/acceptance pages t the graduate secretary after the defense meeting. Often a thesis cmmittee will ask that yu make sme changes t the dcument befre it is submitted t the Cllege. Yu must be enrlled in at least 1 credit hur f thesis credit while making changes t yur thesis. Shuld yu take lnger than 6 mnths t cmplete the changes t yur thesis, yu must enrll in 3 credit hurs per semester until the revised thesis is cmpleted. Once changes are made and yu have yur advisr s apprval, yu will electrnically submit yur thesis t the Cllege. This prcess is described at: Yu must als have at least ne cpy f yur thesis bund; hwever, mst students have a secnd cpy bund t place n their bkshelf fr psterity. Yu are required t submit t the Department ne bund and ne unbund cpy f yur thesis (give these t the graduate secretary). Finally, yu will need t pay yur fees t the Graduate Schl (see the same website). Timeline. Althugh the graduate schl allws students seven years t cmplete the requirements fr the Master s degree, the department expects students t have earned the Master s degree in three years r fewer.

11 Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 11 Dctrate in Behaviral Psychlgy: Degree Requirements Department Requirements: The dctral training prgram perates accrding t a junir clleague mdel. Yu will wrk clsely with yur advisr(s), jining them in every aspect f prfessinal develpment. This includes designing and cnducting research, preparing manuscripts fr presentatin and publicatin, and presenting and publishing thse manuscripts. Yu typically will wrk with ne advisr, but may wrk with thers r have c-advisrs. Shuld yur r yur advisr s interests change ver the curse f graduate training, yu are free t seek a new advisr. Cursewrk & Enrllment Infrmatin: Appendix B cntains a Dctral degree checklist fr the curses yu are required t take -- and the sequence in which they shuld be taken -- in rder t earn yur degree. Yu are required t be cntinuusly enrlled frm the time yu are admitted until the time yu earn yur degree. The number f hurs in which yu need t enrll depends n whether r nt yu have cmpleted yur Written and Oral Cmprehensive Exam (described in detail belw). Befre yu have passed yur Written and Oral Cmprehensive Exam yu are required t enrll in at least 6 credit hurs each spring and fall semester and at least 3 hrs ver the summer. After yu have (a) cmpleted yur required cursewrk, (b) successfully defended yur Written and Oral Cmprehensive Exam, and (c) have cmpleted 18 hrs f pst-cmprehensive Exam credit, yu can enrll in as few as 1 hur per semester f dissertatin credit. The number f credit hurs in which yu are enrlled shuld accurately reflect yur use f department resurces and faculty time. If special circumstances require that yu be exempted frm the enrllment requirement, yu must request an exemptin. The reasn fr the request must be described in writing and apprved by yur advisr befre submitting it t the Directr f Graduate Training. Students Admitted with a Master s Degree: Transferring credits and yur Master s thesis. If yu were admitted t the prgram having taken graduate curses at anther university, yu are still required t cmplete all f the ABS cursewrk and ther requirements fr the Ph.D. that are utlined in Appendix B (including curses taken befre the Master s degree). Hwever, yu may request that yur prir graduate curses cunt as fulfilling a prtin f the ABS cursewrk as lng as yu earned a grade f A r B (B- is nt gd enugh). Fr example, yu are required t take a Principles f Behavir class (ABSC 796) in the ABS prgram, but may have already cmpleted a cmparable graduate curse at anther university. If this is the case, then yu may petitin t waive ABSC 796 by submitting a written request t the Directr f Graduate Training. Each request shuld be accmpanied by (a) the curse syllabus f the previusly cmpleted curse (b) the syllabus frm the curse yu are petitining t waive, (c) dcumentatin f the grade earned in it (e.g., cpy f yur transcript, which the ABS graduate secretary has n file), and (d) a letter f supprt frm yur advisr. Here are sme imprtant rules and regulatins yu shuld cnsider befre submitting yur request: Yu may nt request t waive a curse with ne yu tk 6 r mre years earlier. Yu may nt substitute distance- r cntinuing-educatin curses fr KU graduate cursewrk. Up t 6 hurs f yur transfer credits (8 hurs if yu earned yur undergraduate degree frm KU) can be cunted as fulfilling the curse credits requirements f the M.A. r Ph.D. degrees. These hurs cannt be the last hurs needed fr yur degree. Althugh credits will transfer and fulfill sme curse requirements, students are still required t earn frm KU the credit hurs required fr a graduate degree: M.A.: 12 hurs f cntent curses plus 3 hrs f practicum Ph.D.: 24 hurs f cntent curses plus 6 hrs f practicum All transfers are apprved at the discretin f the Graduate Curriculum Cmmittee. Yu may nt submit a petitin if yu are beynd yur first year and yu have nt submitted an annual prgress evaluatin in the preceding academic year. In preparatin fr the ral cmprehensive exam, the student will cmplete a written cmprehensive examinatin paper that includes (a) a cmprehensive review f the research literature relevant t the research questin(s) being psed in the (b) research prpsal. The research questins and area f investigatin are chsen by the student with the guidance f his/her advisr. Students must review Appendix D fr mre details n departmental expectatins, in additin t cnsulting with his/her advisr. What fllws are the department s minimum standards fr bth the cmprehensive review and research prpsal. A. Cmprehensive Review Advisrs will guide students n the structure/cntent f the cmprehensive review, as many frmats are pssible. There is n upper r lwer range f pages that may be required t cmplete this sectin sme literatures are vast and sme are much smaller. The dctral aspirant shuld ensure he/she has prvided a cmprehensive literature review f the tpic he/she has chsen fr the dissertatin. Where the directly relevant literature is small, the aspirant shuld wrk with his/her advisr t identify related literatures that wuld infrm the dissertatin. Minimally, the department recgnizes tw distinct appraches: OR 1. Integrated Intrductin Establishes the cntext, backgrund and imprtance f the tpic. Prvides a synpsis f the relevant literature bases in a cmprehensive, integrated summary (avid a review that cnsists f an anntated bibligraphy). Indicates a prblem, cntrversy r a gap in the field f study. Establishes the desirability f the research and its significance r value. Defines key terms. 2. Review f the Literature Sums up the best available research n a specific questin, prblem, r gap in the field f study by using defined search prcedures with clear inclusin/exclusin criteria, an explicit search strategy, and systematic cding and analysis f studies. Analytic results are reprted in the review. In sme cases, the review f the literature may include meta-analysis. Establishes the desirability f the research and its significance r value. Defines key terms. This review may lead t a brief intrductin t the current study r be included as an appendix t the full dcument (aspirants shuld wrk with their advisrs t determine which ptin is apprpriate). B. Research Prpsal The written research prpsal may take tw frms: an APA frmatted research prpsal paper r a NIH frmatted grant prpsal. That is, answers t questins abut the reviews, prpsals, and presentatins require general knwledge that ges beynd the written examinatins and presentatins. T give yu frmal training in this skill, yu will write three jurnal critiques as part f yur dctral training. The targets f these critiques will be research articles/manuscripts, all f them empirical. The target articles must cver a range f tpics and research methds/experimental designs. Yu may cmplete the first tw editrial critiques as part f a curse requirement with the final apprval f yur advisr. The Graduate Curriculum Cmmittee des nt need t apprve these critiques. The third editrial critique must be cmpleted independently utside f a curse assignment. Yur third critique is reviewed by a panel f three ABSC faculty members, including adjunct faculty, ne f whm is yur advisr. The reviews are arranged by the student and advisr. 20 Fall 2012 ABS GS Handbk 20 General Departmental Plicies and Prcedures Enrllment: Yu are expected t enrll in a full-time credit lad (9 credit hurs in the fall and spring semesters) until yu have cmpleted yur written and ral cmprehensive exam. Hwever, during the summer, if yu are a GTA r need financial assistance, yu will need t enrll in at least 3 credit hurs. Nte, yur advisr may require yu t enrll in 3 r mre credits during the summer even if yu are nt a GTA. After yu have (a) cmpleted yur required cursewrk, (b) successfully defended yur written and ral cmprehensive exam, and (c) have cmpleted 18 hrs f pst-cmprehensive exam credit, yu can enrll in as few as 1 hur per semester f dissertatin credit. Yu may apply the credit hurs f the semester in which yu pass yur cmprehensive exam tward the 18 hrs requirement (specified in Part C abve). If yu are emplyed as a GTA, yu may nt reduce the number f credit hurs in which yu enrll. The number f credit hurs in which yu are enrlled shuld accurately reflect yur use f department resurces and faculty time. If yu are ff-campus, nt seeing an advisr, but submitting theses, dissertatins, etc. fr feedback and grading, yu are using department resurces and shuld be enrlled in the number f hurs that reflects yur use f them. The exact number is determined by cnsulting with yur advisr. If special circumstances require that yu be exempted frm the enrllment requirement, yu must request an exemptin. The reasn fr the request must be described in writing and apprved by yur advisr befre submitting it t the Directr f Graduate Training. Serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant: As a graduate teaching assistant, yu are expected t be prepared fr and attend every class, as well as t be invlved in all utside-the-classrm duties such as preparing study guides r lectures, grading assignments, maintaining the grade-bk, cmmunicating with students, etc. Yu shuld plan t spend 10 (0.25 time GTA) r 20 (0.5 time GTA) hurs per week engaged in these activities. Yur faculty teaching supervisr shuld nt assign tasks t yu that will require mre f yur time than this. As a graduate teaching assistant, yu are a senir clleague t yur junir clleagues -- the undergraduate students. As such, yu shuld treat them prfessinally in all facets and manner f classrm instructin and practicum training, bth inside and utside these settings. In particular, the Rules and Regulatins f the University Senate state that, at the beginning f each curse and each practicum, faculty members, instructrs, and graduate teaching assistants shuld infrm students clearly abut hw t prepare class and practicum assignments, ntebks, utside wrk, and the like. Infrmatin n attendance and grading practices shuld als be included. This ensures that students will nt be suspected f academic miscnduct n the basis f any ignrance f curse requirements. Making Timely Prgress: Yu are expected t cmplete yu Master s degree within 3 years and cmplete yu dctral degree 3 years after that. Students wh are admitted with a Master s degree frm anther university are expected t cmplete their dctral degree in 3 years. Accrding t the Cllege, yu have a maximum f 10 years t cmplete yur dctral degree after the date f yur admissin, but nly 8 years if yu were admitted with a Master s degree. If yu are fllwing these timelines, thugh, yu are nt meeting departmental expectatins. Expiratin f these 10 (8) years withut having cmpleted the degree is equivalent t a resignatin frm the prgram. Annual Perfrmance Review: Befre the start f each academic year, a Student Perfrmance Review Cmmittee will frmally review yur prgress. In preparatin fr this review, yu will cmplete a prgress reprt, give it t yur advisr fr a signature, and submit it t the Cmmittee by the date requested, usually in June. Failure t d s may result in yur being placed n prbatin. The Cmmittee will prepare a written reprt summarizing which gals have been cmpleted n time and which have nt. A cpy f the annual review frm is prvided n the ABS website. If the Student Perfrmance Review Cmmittee judges that yu are nt making adequate prgress, it will request that within a 30 day perid yu develp a timeline with yur advisr fr cmpleting the remaining degree requirements. Failure t develp and adhere t the prpsed timeline will result in apprpriate cnsequences.
