EASTERN REGIONAL STROKE CONFERENCE 2015 May 15, 2015 Registration 8:00 am Program 8:20 am - 4:30 pm Hilton Greenville Greenville, North Carolina Following the Evidence to Achieve the New Normal Jointly provided by Eastern AHEC Department of Nursing and Allied Health Education Vidant Health, Center for Learning and Performance Office of Continuing Medical Education Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University

DESCRIPTION Stroke remains a leading cause of adult disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the US. While Stroke is caused by a form of cardiovascular disease, it disables more than it kills. North Carolinians suffer strokes at a higher incidence than the national average and the death rate is double the national average. Every 20 minutes someone in NC is hospitalized with a stroke. Following a stroke, patients experience a variety of neurophysiologic changes that impact clinical outcomes and quality of life. Beginning in the acute care phase and extending through rehabilitation and return to the community, sequelae such as spasticity, spatial neglect, dysphagia, and depression can affect length of stay in the hospital, readmissions, long term functional capability, and life satisfaction. Participants in the 2015 Eastern Regional Stroke Conference will hear evidence from expert local and national researchers and clinicians to address gaps in stroke care practices that will enable them to improve knowledge and guide practice improvement for stroke patients. TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Recreation Therapists, Emergency Medical Service personnel, Case Managers and others who comprise the interdisciplinary team needed to provide a comprehensive continuum of care to stroke patients. OBJECTIVES Regional Stroke Center Update Describe the current state of stroke care in Eastern NC Clinical Considerations with New Agents in Stroke Management Explain the role of new oral anticoagulants in the management of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation Describe the role of new antiplatelet drugs in stroke prevention Discuss emerging data on a new injectable lipid lowering agent Right Brain Recovery: A Key to the Health of Our Community Name three areas of function relevant to daily life, for which the right brain is dominant Identify the difference between Where, perceptual-attention and aiming, motor-intention in spatial behavior, and understand why Aiming may be highly important to patient safety Describe the process of training to perform accurate neglect assessment, and the process of prism adaptation training for spatial neglect Connect hidden disabilities with community-level threats to health and quality of life Dysphagia A System-Wide Screening Approach Update: to Significance Reducing Readmissions and Tools Describe in the Stroke the significance Population of dysphagia Identify reasons screening for in the post-stroke readmissions populations in the stroke Define population the clinical Recognize processes used in Describe dysphagia the screening significance & efficacy of dysphagia of each screening Select in the appropriate post-stroke screening populations tools based Define on review of published research Impact of Depression on Stroke Recovery Discuss the epidemiology of post-stroke depression (PSD) Identify risk factors for developing PSD Name available screening tools Discuss outcomes related to PSD Evidence-based Management to Facilitate Motor Recovery Post Stroke Identify appropriate interventions to measure post stroke spasticity Describe appropriate treatment for post stroke spasticity Stroke Survivor Story Discuss the impact of treatment and recovery on life after stroke A System-Wide Approach to Reducing Readmissions in the Stroke Population Identify reasons for readmissions in the stroke population Recognize successful approaches to ensure smooth transitions of care for the stroke patient across the continuum
