2 Overview and Objectives Target Audience The target audience for this symposium includes all providers of care for patients with diabetes mellitus, including primary care physicians, specialty physicians, endocrinologists, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, and family and general medicine practitioners. Statement of Need With the high prevalence of endocrine disorders encountered in clinical practice today, primary care physicians need to stay abreast of changes in the field and incorporate verified techniques and practices in the treatment of their patients. The prevalence of diabetes is expected to increase sharply over the next 40 years due to an aging population, increasing minority populations at high risk for type 2 diabetes, and increasing longevity of people with diabetes. Therefore, physicians, physician assistants, and other health care providers need the most current, evidence-based information to manage and treat this growing public health epidemic. Learning Objectives The overall goal of the activity is to enhance learners knowledge and improve their competency in incorporating updates to venous disease treatment into their practice. Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to: Describe the practical application of diabetes management technologies, including pens, meters, and pumps Describe how to initiate intensive insulin therapy Identify indications for GLP-1 mimetics and DPP-4 inhibitors and amylin as part of type 2 diabetes management Describe complicated medical situations requiring diabetes management Accreditation & Credit Designation The Duke University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Registration cancellations received on or before June 15 will be fully refunded minus a processing fee of 5%. Cancellations on or before June 16 through July 5 will receive a 50% refund minus a processing fee of 5%. Cancellations received on or after July 6 will not be refunded.
