2 Statement of Need: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an important public health problem where every year, at least 1.7 million TBIs occur either as an isolated injury or along with other injuries. The CDC also reports falls are the primary mechanisms of TBI-related ED visits in the elderly (65 years and older), accounting for 81.8% of TBI-related ED visits. In addition, the CDC reports TBI-related hospitalizations for persons 65 years of age and older increased more than 50%. Furthermore, for persons 65 years and older, rates of TBI-related deaths increased from 41.2 to 45.2 deaths per 100,000. Falls account for the majority (54.4%) of TBI-related deaths in adults 65 years of age and older.
