Improvements in acute stroke management, especially early recognition, assessment, and treatment, along with updated evidence-based guidelines to help direct decision making, have led to significant improvements in outcomes during the past decade. Actual outcomes, however, have not reached those achievable, owing to a variety to factors that include gaps in knowledge, competence, and practice among health care providers. Given the significant morbidity and mortality associated with strokes, education aimed at improving the knowledge and competence of practitioners to prevent and treat this disorder has the potential to substantially improve outcomes in this large patient population. Target Audience Neurologists, emergency medicine physicians, neurosurgeons, primary care physicians, nurses, physician assistants, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists and occupational therapists. Learning Objectives After completing this educational activity, participants will be able to do the following: Critically evaluate the evidence associated with treatment of patients with cerebral hemorrhage; Summarize interim data from trials using mechanical endovascular interventions and their implications for clinical practice; Identify issues associated with implementing mobile stroke units and stroke telemedicine and describe strategies to address those barriers; Describe guidelines and strategies to address issues associated with treatment times for acute stroke; Present the salient points affecting the treatment decisions for incidental aneurysms found on imaging studies; Create a program to coordinate the care of patients as they transition from the hospital to other providers; Describe how to institute a palliative care program to coordinate between providers and patients and their families.
