Coleman Medical Staff Auditorium 701 Grove Road - Greenville, SC Target Audience Registered Nurses, Physicians, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, and Speech- Language Pathologists Purpose The purpose of this interprofessional continuing education conference is to provide interdisciplinary training in the management of tracheostomy and ventilator patients. Objectives 1. List causes for tracheostomy and ventilator and physiological changes following tracheotomy and ventilator use. 2. Discuss the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to management of ventilator and tracheostomy patients. 3. Describe current research and best practices for tracheostomy/ventilator management including the weaning process as it relates to each presenter s area of expertise. 4. Describe the role of the speech language pathologist in the management of the tracheostomy/ventilator patient. 5. Discuss how an early intervention team can impact outcomes of the tracheostomy/ventilator patient. 6. Describe the role of nursing in management of the tracheostomy/ ventilator patient including post- operative care. 7. Describe the physiological changes of the pulmonary tract and benefits of an HME for the tracheostomy/ventilator patient. 8. Describe an early intervention team and the impact on respiratory health. 9. Describe the benefits of PMV use including secretion management, voicing, swallowing, tracheostomy/ventilator weaning. 10. Describe the role of the Respiratory Therapist in the management of the tracheostomy/ventilator patient.

4 Continuing Education Credit: Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 6 contact hours. Occupational Therapist: This program has been approved for 7.2 contact hours of continuing education for Occupational Therapists. SC AHEC has presumptive approval as a provider of continuing education for Occupational Therapists by the SC Board of Examiners for Occupational Therapy. Physical Therapists: This program has been approved for 7.2 contact hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Board of Examiners for Physical Therapy. Respiratory Care Practitioners: 6 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners. Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologist: This course is offered for 0.6 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area). Others: This program is approved for 0.6 CEUs (6 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards. NOTE: Participants must attend 90% of the educational offering to receive a certificate of attendance. No partial credit will be given.
