3 Audience This activity is designed for neurologists, emergency medicine physicians, general practitioners, radiologists, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, technologists and program administrators involved in the management of acute stroke patients. Program Overview Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the US, the leading cause of brain injury in adults, and the leading cause of major disability. Stroke care at a Comprehensive Center is intended to facilitate the use of our best resources to minimize or prevent, when possible, the complications of a stroke through rapid identification of symptoms and appropriate interventions. This symposium will provide a comprehensive review of the effectiveness of organized stroke care in reducing mortality, institutionalization, and dependency in activities of daily living. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Discuss current diagnostic and management strategies for treatment of arterial dissection. Compare clinical and neuroimaging techniques in the selection of stroke patients for reperfusion therapy. Review recent trials regarding the use of endovascular methods for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Assess surgical versus endovascular treatment options for patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Discuss available data on the minimally invasive neurosurgery for the evacuation of intracerebral hemorrhage and compared to hemicraniecomy/hematoma evacuation employed in prior trials. Describe the current standard of care for decompressive craniectomy in patients with acute large anterior circulation ischemic infarctions resulting in malignant cerebral edema as well as promising medical treatment for this condition. Recognize the current application of telemedicine in the evaluation and treatment of acute stroke patients. Summarize current diagnostic and management strategies for treatment cryptogenic stroke and review upcoming trials. Review the standard of care for the management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Discuss transcranial doppler with embolic detection as a tool for risk stratification as well as emerging research for revascularization and intensive medical management versus medical management alone in patients with asymptomatic high-grade carotid stenosis.
